XC skiing 1:28:34 [2] 12.8 mi (6:55 / mi) +387m 6:20 / mi

On the way home from Bend, stopped by Teacup Lake for a ski. Finally some nice weather! It was even sunny and had great views of Mt. Hood, which is beautiful and snowy looking!!

XC skiing 1:10:26 [2] 7.83 mi (9:00 / mi) +261m 8:09 / mi

And classic at Messiner on yesterday's VR55. Not as great today - was icing up at the higher elevations and slipping up a storm on the wetter snow lower down. Amazing how altitude-dependent this snow was - we were right *at* the snow line.

XC skiing 1:31:17 [2] 11.84 mi (7:43 / mi) +365m 7:02 / mi

And some skating.

Woo, skiing! Drove over Santiam pass in between Corvallis and Bend last night after the Women in Physics dinner at Oregon State. I wasn't quite prepared for the pass - just saw a road going where I wanted it to and took it. Drove slow and never slipped, but probably I should have stopped to put on chains at some point.

Anyways, went skiing at Mt. Bachelor with new stats prof Andrew - we skied together first 20 minutes or so. He's not bad, but skiing in the four inches of fresh fluff was a little hard (their groomer broke this morning).

And a classic ski for the afternoon. Given the ~0 and precipitating conditions, was pretty happy with my VR 55. Had to work to make it set, but it would.

Survived the Stefan-Boltzman and Planck's constant labs and went out for a evening run. There is still not much light here!

So Tom and I are buying a house in Portland. It looks like everything is a go and we're to close January 28th. Being back in town, took an afternoon jog to head out and see it again!

It's a cute little 3 bedroom 1950s ranch with a nice backyard. Gear storage in a garage (car will have to live outside). We're psyched!

Strength 5:02 [1] 0.05 mi (1:41:15 / mi) +1m 1:35:18 / mi

Core.

XC skiing 1:30:00 [2]

Woke up early due to jet lag, so just shoved out the door and up to Teacup Lake! Was the 2nd car in the parking lot, but first one out on the impeccably groomed trails. Pretty much had the place to myself for my first loop, then saw the odd person. Parking lot had at least 50 cars in it upon my return. I'm sure others are happy to have a spot freed at 9:30am... =)

Note

Made it back to Portland. Scheming to go skiing at Mt. Hood tomorrow. Perfect Florida recovery.

Running 33:44 [2] 4.5 mi (7:30 / mi)

Made it to the Gaylord Palm Springs Resort. Many astronomers are not so psyched to be here. It's just that all-fake everything-is-overpriced type deal. Ginormous atrium with water features and real alligators living within. (Ok, so not everything is fake.)

Anyways, the gym is alright as gyms go, tons of aerobic machines and a good selection of weights and such. I treadmilled for awhile, then did some tricep, ab and double pole work. Because it looks like OR has snow for when I return...

Saw many astro friends at the reception from all eras - grad school at Oxford, 1st postdoc at UMass, 2nd postdoc at Toledo and now Reedies as well. Tomorrow the games begin! Talk on Pluto on things New Horizons to start us off!

Running 56:56 [2] 7.04 mi (8:05 / mi) +40m 7:57 / mi

Last run from White Plains! Nice and sunny out, first 1.5 miles along with Tom on the bike path along the Bronx River. Legs are finally feeling more normal if not 100% recovered from Midnight Run.

Now off to catch a flight to Orlando for the winter meeting of the American Astronomical Society!

Running 29:35 [1] 3.25 mi (9:07 / mi) +72m 8:31 / mi

And legs are still sore! Moved from hammies to quads though, so improvement? Toodled around White Plains with Tom. Our initial route of running Reservoir Rd. to connect with Broadway was thwarted by Reservoir Rd. being closed. Hope the legs finally feel up for a longer run tomorrow! Then off to conference land (Kissimmee, FL).

Running race 25:08 [4] 4.0 mi (6:17 / mi) +39m 6:06 / mi

3rd annual Midnight Run with Patti, James and Tom in Central Park. This year I didn't line up with the elite women, just hung out in the 6 minute corral, which was totally appropriate. Was in the lead for the women from that corral for mile 2, but the same woman who led mile 1 pulled ahead of me going up the mile 3 hill. Another woman passed right at the finish, when my stomach wasn't feeling well, so didn't give much of a fight.

Training started for 2016! This was 17 seconds faster than last year.

Happy New Year to all!

Running 3:47 [1] 0.35 mi (10:56 / mi)

4 PM

Running 21:38 [1] 2.13 mi (10:11 / mi) +48m 9:31 / mi

Little afternoon jog to loosen up with Tom. Left hamstring insertion is particularly twingy. Hopefully better tomorrow! Ran towards Silver Lake, didn't really find a trail.
