Cycling 27:59 [1] 7.48 mi (3:44 / mi) +73m 3:38 / mi

Sunday morning duathlon over distance!
7.5 mile bike - 10 mile trail run @ Powell's Butte - 7.5 mile bike

Fun times. Great weather, not yet too hot. Did most of the trails on the butte. Much more crowded than middle-of-winter. Dog walkers, mountain bikers, hikers, a few other runners.

Bike became aid station for the run, stopped back once and had water and bites of Clif Bar. And then really nice to have more water at the end of the run.

Doggone Training @ Memorial Park, Wilsonville

Neat exercise by Mike, a choose-your-own adventure for 10 pairs of controls throughout the course. So, you had to go to each of the #1s first, then each of the #2s and so on. Forced you to keep thinking ahead and about route choice.

Tried hard to keep the pace up and to keep it be sprint-like training even by myself. I went too far to my first #1 (looking in trees mapped as white, not a single tree), my second #5 (didn't deflect from fence early enough) and my second #9 (went up the more substantial path, but thought I was on the tiny one.)

Route choice wise, I think given the order I took the 9s in, I should have reversed how I took the 10s. Because the white hillside was totally runnable, but still slower than the road.

And round 2, because have to get the training in!

Took the complement order to my first go. Only occasionally (2s, 7s, 10s) definitely the wrong order.

Running 49:28 [2] 5.75 mi (8:36 / mi) +104m 8:09 / mi

Yay lunchrun! With Todd and Ueli. Mostly chatting with Ueli, Todd was having a tougher first run in the somewhat-heat.

Cycling 2:20:07 intensity: (1:20:07 @1) + (1:00:00 @2) 27.88 mi (5:02 / mi) +887m 4:34 / mi

And then an epic Thursday eve ride! Mission: deliver Suzy's DNA samples to be run at OHSU. But we wanted to go up Council Crest, after dropping the boys (Derek, Douglas) off to do the shortest option. And then we didn't find the fastest way down. And then we were on the other side of a ravine from the hospital. So lots of hills...

Running 26:43 intensity: (26:33 @2) + (10 @4) 4.36 mi (6:08 / mi) +116m 5:40 / mi

Copied Tom's Flagstaff workout for some speed!

5 x 30s on 1 min off
5 x 1 min on 2 min off
5 x 30s on 1 min off

Gotta high-five from one of the very recent physics alums who was playing pickup soccer on the field the track was around. =)

Legs perhaps not 100%, but has to be good to get some more speed in!

Running 53:01 [3] 7.4 mi (7:10 / mi) +110m 6:51 / mi

Morning run with Kyle. He's speedy and somehow we did this even faster than his intended 7:30 pace, whoops. We'll have to be more diligent minding pace in the future!

Nice to have a running buddy and as I've been named to a search committee for next year, got to pick his brain about how that all works since he was on one this year.

Also cool to run along the beach in Sellwood- never done that before!
6 PM

Cycling 55:00 [1] 13.0 mi (4:14 / mi)

Cycling downtown and back for Willamette Week's Mt. Hood editions opening party. Trying to actually *live* in this city called Portland...

Orienteering race 4:25:00 [2] 27.0 km (9:49 / km)

Mal Harding Memorial Big Muddy Rogaine

Teamed up with Eric Bone and did my first actual rogaine! Such amazingly beautiful terrain, was just a joy to run around. Even the drive there through Gov't Camp, Maupin, Shaniko was just gorgeous.

Anyways, 27 controls, we planned I think a pretty good route around them, at least nothing seemed terrible when we were out there. Interesting to have to think on a bigger scale. And amazing to have it be just so open. At times (#70!) the footing was rough because of deep cow tracks. And then towards the end was definitely feeling ready to be done heading up to the final control which was really only there for those who were silly enough to want to clear the course. Appreciated the rock arch, stonehenge, the antelope skull on a tree controls...

Thanks much to all who made it happen, and to Mal for being the impetus behind this for so long.

Cycling 39:01 [1] 8.2 mi (4:45 / mi) +300m 4:16 / mi

Aw, none of the bike gang could join this afternoon. Something about being in Idaho, boyfriend's parents around and the call of sour beer. Anyways, skeddadled over to Mt. Tabor and went up it a few times.

Running 11:20 [2] 0.9 mi (12:36 / mi) +100m 9:22 / mi

And once on foot, for good measure. Meant to go a second time, but calves felt iffy just on the once. I need to keep doing these!

Cycling 30:00 [1] 7.8 mi (3:51 / mi)

And picking my way through neighborhoods to get to 20th and Salmon, where Ueli (bookstore manager and head lunch runner) was playing in a Marimba band at a farmer's market. So I had some chicken tikka from a tent while listening propped against my bike. Was feeling pretty straight out of Portlandia...

Running 56:52 [2] 7.6 mi (7:29 / mi)

Did a morningful of work then headed out for a run before the Staff Appreciation lunch. Saw Kyle just coming out of Oaks Bottom having done some trail intervals, quick chat before we parted ways.

Whoops, left Garmin cord in Pacific city beach cottage... bummer. Garmin was reporting low battery, but I still had to download the century, so I just brought it back and went running. Sans Garmin. And my phone was also at 1%, so no Strava. So sans any time keeping device whatsoever, oh my!

Anyways, did 3 x 1 mile at the Reed track. At least, I think so. I might have zoned out on the last interval and it was 1.5 instead.

Then ran up to Safeway for grocery shopping. Walked home, laden.

Reach the Beach century. Fun times. We were a pack of 6: me, Suzy, Albyn, Sarah, Ryan and Derek, because Todd and Bryan raced off the front after about 1 mile. We stopped at nearly every rest stop, which were probably on average 15 miles apart.

Totally a moderate pace, I was barely working for most of it. But for a bit in the middle when Suzy and I took off for a bit and then especially when we latched on to a faster train into a headwind was a bit harder.

Cool event, neat to get somewhere far away by bike.

Running 32:07 [1] 3.8 mi (8:27 / mi)

Wow, legs finally recovering from Saturday's trail race... a little joggeroo, including ordering a sandwich at the deli, running another little loop as they made it, then picking it up and running home.

Easy ride around golf-course community part of Bend. Nice because of well-paved almost empty roads. Quads definitely sore from yesterday, but cycling is a good option for working them out hopefully!

Smith Rock Ascent 15 mile trail race

Wow, that was tough and a blast! The longest trail race I've done in awhile. I guess since 25k in Toledo, but such a different beast since Toledo trail running has no climb and this had lots. The final climb to the summit of Gray Butte at 8 miles was ridiculously steep. I'm used to New England steep trails- when it gets that steep, you're basically climbing up rock or manmade stairs. This was crazy steep, but a 4 wheeler like track, so was really hard to find good foot placement so you didn't slip backwards on the fine dry dirt/gravel.

Ran miles 2.5-7.5 with a guy named Kevin. Nice to have the company. He is new to trail running and probably both didn't intake enough calories and didn't really know how to descent so I ended up finishing around 4 minutes ahead. The two major descents were pretty tough - no break to the grade for basically 2 miles in each case, quads felt it, especially the second!

Won for the women by ~9 minutes, was about 10 minutes back from the first men. Got $50 for being the first to the top of Gray Butte and then a gift certificate for Altra shoes for being the first woman - if any one has any experience with these shoes, give a holler. I'm thinking of getting their trail shoes for doing races like this in actually, as I did today in road runners, not wanting to wear only 212s for 15 miles.

Didn't feel like running after another day of three theses - it's fun but draining!

Today was my last student - Anna on some molecular gas ALMA observations of a nearby merging galaxy system. Then a computer science student on the algorithm, but really more the implementation of "sequential model based optimization" and then another physics student on a really awesome project slowing down the group velocity (*not the phase velocity or information velocity*) of light in ruby.
