11 PM

Running 21:28 [1] 1.53 mi (14:02 / mi)

Warmup for the Midnight Run in Central Park. Snuck into the elite tent, warmed up, pranced around and was totally in awe of the actually elite women who still chose to run in mini-shorts in 20 degree weather... I had well-clad legs to keep the hammies happy.

Hm, can't access the entry for Jan 1, yet, probably because log is on West coast time... (Edit: nope, because I put the workout in 2014!)

Tuesday Dec 30, 2014 #

Running 45:02 [2] 6.0 mi (7:30 / mi) +44m 7:20 / mi

Ran the rail trail Bridge across the Hudson, first mile with Tom, on my own thereafter. Hammies feel pretty good!

Sunday Dec 28, 2014 #

3 PM

Running 39:56 [1] 4.32 mi (9:15 / mi) +32m 9:02 / mi

Toodle with Tom along the Erie Canal starting from Pittsford Village, heading Southeast to the Grand Embankment and back.

Hamstring feeling better, but I took the 3rd mile a bit faster (8 min/mi) and it's still a bit twingy.

Saturday Dec 27, 2014 #

11 AM

Running 20:56 [1] 2.4 mi (8:43 / mi) +19m 8:31 / mi

A mini run around East Rochester, testing out the hammie. Felt not terrible running, but it's still painful for everyday stuff, so not time to push it yet...

Strength 9:00 [1]

7 min abs, 2 min back

Thursday Dec 25, 2014 #

7 AM

Running 52:41 [2] 6.15 mi (8:34 / mi) +160m 7:56 / mi

Christmas run! Around the Christmas loop, with Tom for the first 2 miles. Not so cold for Christmas...

Hamstrong sore from yesterday's hill workout, maybe shouldn't have gone so long.

Wednesday Dec 24, 2014 #

10 AM

Running 54:41 intensity: (45:41 @1) + (9:00 @4) 6.02 mi (9:05 / mi) +308m 7:50 / mi

Hill workout - 8 times Red Hawk Hollow Hill before the rain hit! Tom joined for two, otherwise cheered from the top.

Strength 10:04 [1] 0.15 mi (1:07:13 / mi) +29m 41:58 / mi

7 min core, 2 min back, 1 min pushups. Pushups were Tom's idea.

XC skiing 39:04 [1] 4.22 mi (9:15 / mi) +63m 8:51 / mi

Classic ski, mostly double pole because VR 60 wasn't kicking and I didn't feel like applying klister! Out and backing with Tom, around airport + rock n' rollin.

XC skiing 40:07 [2] 5.37 mi (7:28 / mi) +112m 7:01 / mi

And a finale skate ski at Ole's, as the ominous rain started on up. A good loop, legs are tired from past few days!

Monday Dec 22, 2014 #

11 AM

XC skiing 1:05:12 [2] 8.42 mi (7:45 / mi) +182m 7:15 / mi

Classic ski at Ole's, with Tom. With Tom means skiing out and back a bunch, but it's nice to ski together! We did the middle tour of Ole's: airport loop, deer run, 7 towards 4, then back through the woods. Really nice skiing, VR 40 kicked perfectly! And Tom's getting the wax set-glide better, woo!

XC skiing 59:40 [2] 9.17 mi (6:30 / mi) +286m 5:56 / mi

And then a skate ski by myself. Did 2 x race loop, 2 x Rock N' Rollin (is such a fun trail!) and then back in via the polo fields. Legs were certainly getting a bit tired by the end!

Ski-O 1:01:58 [3] 8.23 mi (7:32 / mi) +227m 6:56 / mi

Yeah! Ski-o! At Lapland Lake. Eric reminded me of how long ago it was that I was a little Bill Koch skier there... Did do Empire State Games once, back in the day!

Anyways, a good course, Lapland Lake has a good enough density of junctions, particularly on the West side of the bridge. Totally felt unpracticed reading from the map holder, unsurprising. Got quite lost to #1 and then a few right at the end, one did a cut somewhere I didn't expect, another cut was much longer than I was expecting on the map and made me panic-ski... Great fun, this really is an awesome sport.

XC skiing 4:35 [1] 0.78 mi (5:51 / mi) +42m 5:01 / mi

5 PM

Strength 6:00 [3]

Core with Tom, Mom and Dad before an excellent dinner at the Mad River Barn.

Aerobics 44:09 [1] 0.58 mi (1:16:09 / mi) +2m 1:15:21 / mi

Last Zumba! Small crew today, just 4 of us. Fun times, one new song.

Running 4:40 [1] 0.55 mi (8:29 / mi) +12m 7:57 / mi

Thursday Dec 18, 2014 #

Note

Complicated TT plans involve traveling to Flagstaff, conferencing in the Biosphere and then flying into Louisville, KY Friday morning. Anyone else want to join a rental car from there? Flying back through Louisville as well.
3 PM

Running 44:52 [2] 5.62 mi (7:59 / mi) +71m 7:41 / mi

Last lunch run of the year, well at least for me. A fast group today, Kyle from Math joined, who is a few minutes faster than me in a half marathon, so that sped the group up, especially as the younger men had some sort of needing to show off they were also fast syndrome. At least that's my diagnosis. I had to shorten the run a bit because my hamstring was bothering me. It's been fragile since 3 sprints on Sat.

Drills 7:40 [1] 0.52 mi (14:44 / mi) +44m 11:40 / mi

Normal running drills. Campus is becoming quite as exams finish on up!

Running 31:08 intensity: (13:08 @1) + (18:00 @3) 4.2 mi (7:25 / mi) +148m 6:41 / mi

2 x 1.5 mile tempo at a bit over 6 min/mile pace. Felt ok, but not super-speedy.

Strength 2:04 [1] 0.02 mi (1:43:56 / mi) +42m 13:45 / mi

Push ups! 3 x (6 real, 9 wimp)

Tuesday Dec 16, 2014 #

3 PM

Running 32:30 [1] 3.4 mi (9:34 / mi) +109m 8:42 / mi

The Sun came out! And I left work a bit late to really get the Sun, but still, it wasn't raining. Two loops of canyon and then up to the running shop to use my $50 towards shoes before the gift certificate from the Reed 5k expired.

Strength 12:01 [1] 0.09 mi (2:13:22 / mi) +39m 56:53 / mi

Core!

Running 42:05 [1] 4.84 mi (8:42 / mi) +124m 8:03 / mi

And that's a wrap! Gave my Astrophysics exam this morning. Wow, can't believe my first term is done!

Legs a bit better, but still not fully recovered. Standard Springwater-Sellwood, with attempting to connect to 37th at the beginning.

The the President's Christmas party. Snazzy house, good to catch up with some people, say in the Humanities, that I haven't seen since new faculty orientation.

Sunday Dec 14, 2014 #

9 AM

Running 35:03 [1] 3.41 mi (10:17 / mi) +94m 9:28 / mi

Wow, I thought my legs felt fine until I tried to run! Just scampering out to Golden Gate Park unfortunately without Mikkel because his foot was injured. I think it was mostly my hamstrings being tight that didn't let me move quick. Felt totally pathetic going at 10.00/mile jogging pace and having many more people pass me than normal.

Orienteering 13:55 [1] 1.09 mi (12:46 / mi) +99m 9:58 / mi

Since I was running by where the final sprint was yesterday, had a bit of a map run to just read and run at the same time.

Running 26:44 [1] 2.81 mi (9:31 / mi) +76m 8:47 / mi

Passed the Hippie zone on the way back. And was passed by two ultra-runner looking women. (Something about lots of water bottles and long socks, I think is the look?)

Point Lobos, Golden Gate NRA
Stage Two of Sprint the Golden Gate and first round of the Sprint Tourney

With the declaration that there would indeed be 3 races today as of 5pm last night (thanks to Mikkell for the call+messages!), I threw together my stuff and just barely made it onto my flight to SFO from Portland, whew!

I was seeded into heat 6 for this first round of the tournament and started off, but eep! Both sides of my 'map' were blank!

Lost maybe 10-15 seconds, so had people to chase to 1 and then 2, but the leaders took off within the VA hospital to try to get to 3, and I did the immediate necessary 180 and pulled ahead. Still in contact with others, but mostly leading through 6 and then I didn't sense the others thereafter.

Imperfectly executed routes:
5->6: Should have immediately turned around for a bit shorter and less climb.
8->9: I choose low route, Vlad says high route was probably fastest.
11->12: I took safer/less energy road route, should have just contoured.
13->14: Took indistinct trail instead of staircase from circle in the first instance, should have kept better track of direction.
14->15: Should have tried more direct, I went through 12.
15->16: Stopped at other control near 15 just to check it's code. I should have been confident enough not to... I also rather daintly avoided vegetation right around 16, but no olive green, so I guess didn't have to.

Adolph's Bathing, Golden Gate NRA
Stage Three of Sprint the Golden Gate

In the first heat of the Antelopes to start. I was slow from the start and perhaps 5th of 6 to punch 1 and 2. Then passed Nadja and was chasing down Mikkel, Martin and Janne through the next controls.

I saw 7 and saw Mikkel heading away from it, double checked my map and went up to punch. But then my big mistake of the race, I didn't vault over the 1m high chain link fence, which was marked as crossable. I guess I just wasn't in the mind frame in a sprint that that was a crossable feature. So lost time and went through 9 on my way to 8 and had to start chasing down again.

Martin lost time trying to get to 13 through the bushes, so then Mikkel was leading and I was second. But, another crucial moment was 16. I did unfold the map to read the control description that it was at the SW foot, but I didn't read that it was the top wall, not the bottom one. So both I and Mikkel lost time going the longer way around to get to the proper level. Left Martin with enough of a lead for the win, with Mikkel and them myself trailing in not far back.

The Lost Herd at Golden Gate Park
Stage Four and Final of the Sprint Tournament

Yay! So happy that the 3rd race of the day was snuck in! Final heat was myself, Will E., Mikkel, Martin, Rex and Nadja.

I found the incorrect little trail from the start and ended up fighting through some green and trailing behind the others. I took the low route to 3 and gained a bit of time, others went left. Will was firmly in the lead with Mikkel in second, with Rex and Martin and I trading around. I was in pretty good contact with Mikkel until my choice to 12 to use the road didn't go so well - there was no room for a pedestrian because of bushes growing into the road, so almost run over a few times.

I did find the little trail that led right to the control, but doubted the fork off from it actually to the control because of the downed tree fully across it. Came back as Rex led the way back there.

Almost passed the trail off the road to 14 (must stay focused!), was pretty much racing Martin by this point. He chose better to stay low to 17 and pulled ahead. But I cut through where 16 was to get to 18 and gained the lead over him. I knew there wasn't much left so focused to punch 19 and then kept map reading to 20 and the finish. Was totally surprised Martin wasn't right there, but he had missed 19 in the first instance.

So 3rd overall, 1st woman. Good to get some good sprinting in!

Yes! Finally back to doing a bit of drills. My left hammie has been a bit twingy, need to take better care.

Running 25:51 [2] 3.21 mi (8:03 / mi) +99m 7:21 / mi

Running 15:12 [2] 2.0 mi (7:36 / mi)

Hah, found the treadmills at Reed. Shared room with all the weights and stuff in the basement of the gym. Just a little warm-up for Zumba!

Aerobics 45:56 [1] 0.81 mi (56:41 / mi) +39m 49:19 / mi

Zumba! A good group for the week. But the best participant was Barbara's grandson who was 1) having pajama day and then 2) decided that his top was too hot, so we ended up with a topless + PJ'ed munchkin Zumbaing along with us, at least for a few songs.

Running 51:02 [0] 6.09 mi (8:23 / mi) +115m 7:55 / mi

Ug weather. 40s and pouring. Really pouring, which apparently Portland doesn't do much, but was certainly doing today. Still, the email went out and we had a good showing of 7 hearty souls and one dog-soul.

Upon return, I took of my shoes, but still wet clothing+hair completely drenched my kitchen. Wish I remembered my running gear so I could go sauna with everyone else after!

Running 41:41 [0] 5.08 mi (8:12 / mi) +151m 7:31 / mi

Pseudo Flagstaff track workout. Ok, nothing really pseudo about it. Their workout involved running partners, of which I had none, so I just did a 1-2-3-4-4-3-2-1 interval pyramid out at the Reed track.

Then, the very last conference of my P101 group. So sad! Best question of this round: can a black hole be the mass of a simple harmonic oscillator? Also there was much panic about *why* sin(x) = x is ok and why everything acts like a SHO around stable equilibria. So they were taught/reminded of Taylor series. Perhaps inappropriate, but, the truth!
