Running 47:38 [2] 0.83 mi (57:23 / mi) +2m 56:57 / mi

Lunch Halloween Zumba!

Thriller featured. =) I went barefoot because I forgot my shoes. Think the feet survived.

Running 50:15 [2] 6.0 mi (8:23 / mi) +75m 8:04 / mi

Lunchrun with Reedies!

A new route, first through the industrial zone before the Oaks Bottom single track. Strava'd because I forgot Garmin charging in my office. Mostly chatted with Ueli, the Swiss bookstore manager that actually knows what orienteering is. =)

Running 34:46 intensity: (19:46 @1) + (15:00 @4) 4.21 mi (8:16 / mi) +13m 8:11 / mi

Reflective vest intervals a la Tom's Flagstaff group from yesterday. So 1-2-3-4-5 minutes with half rest. All on Reed College place so I didn't need a headlight.

Strength 12:06 [1]

Hah! Managed a smidge of a workout on a Tuesday. Administration committee was helpfully canceled due to someone at a conference and another ill, so an extra 1.5h in life!

First lecture on galaxies, aka gravitationally bound collections of stars, dark matter, gas and optionally, supermassive black holes.

Running 33:52 [2] 3.88 mi (8:44 / mi) +56m 8:21 / mi

Early reflective vest run. A loop around Reed College place and then around the outer edge of the campus. Legs a bit tired from yesterday's run actually!

Sunday Oct 26, 2014 #

Running 56:47 [2] 8.0 mi (7:06 / mi) +100m 6:50 / mi

Woke up and it was dark and raining so did some grading first before heading out for a run. Did the Springwater Corridor loop, started fast and only slowed somewhat, happy with how it felt!

Lots of downed trees/branches, especially on the trail section along Oaks Bottom. Made it more orienteering-training! All from yesterday's storm that made it tough for both the pilot to land in PDX yesterday and for me to get home via a in-disarray transit system.

(Strava'd because the Garmin was acting up, showing it's start screen forever. Have deleted it's memory, hopefully it will behave next time!)

Note
(rest day)

Travel day. I have been in the following 15 airports in the past 15 days:
Portland, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Detroit, Albany, White Plains, Philadelphia, Charlottesville, Washington-Dulles, Rochester, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City.

And that's enough. Think I don't have any flights in November, woo!

Genesee Valley Park Sprint, Blue

After a day of working in the U of R library, we went over to Fleet Feet Sports to get Tom his first pair of running shoes (he's been quite dedicated to his Sambas...) and then to Genesee Valley Park to run the Sprints from the recent US Champs.

Good fun, one closed gate to the golf course for me and tough to tell many trees apart without controls today. Glad to get the training in, thanks to Linda for sending maps!

A beautiful autumn trail run on the AT by Nuclear Lake. Mom hiked and Tom and I ran. Really nice and hard ankle work with all the loose leaves right now! Would be awesome orienteering terrain, very Harriman-esque. Saw a great blue heron dart out of the underbrush by the lake, cool!

Orienteering 8:39 [2] 1.0 mi (8:39 / mi)

Ed's sprint Ross+Sam's post-wedding cookout! Saw the map and really, who could resist giving it a try even if wearing corduroys and clogs... meant I was a little less ferocious through the green, but yeah, that cold air was felt on the sore throat!

A note that Tom had totally gained on me halfway through the course, eep! But then the hill happened...

Running 21:47 [2] 2.65 mi (8:13 / mi) +116m 7:14 / mi
(sick)

Gave a too-long midterm, which is just not good for anyone, but ok, I'll learn I suppose!

After grading almost all, sent myself home while it was still light for a jog around the canyon. Met up with math prof and also avid runner Kyle who was running his and Sarah's new puppy Aesop, so joined them for the latter half, plus a little stint down Reed College place sans Aesop.

Definitely some sort of cold, hoping it passes very, very quickly!!

Running 34:30 intensity: (23:00 @2) + (11:30 @4) 45.0 mi (46 / mi)
(sick)

Tom's Flagstaff track workout, squeezed into a minimal lunchtime. Then onto teaching work, gravity, exoplanets and blackholes, oh my!

4 x 30s with 60s rest
3 x 60s with 75s rest
1 x 90s with 105s rest
3 x 60s with 75s rest
4 x 30s with 60s rest

Scratchy throat towards to start and end the day, think it's an actual illness, boo!

Strength 12:00 [1]

Evening core to get a little something in. Taught about one of my favorite things today - degeneracy pressure in white dwarfs and neutron stars. It still just is so cool to see how it comes out that when you add mass their radii shrink.

Running 10:00 [1]

Warm up at the early-o'clock. So thankful an early start was made possible so I could make my flight!

Orienteering race 1:18:21 [3]

NAOC Long

Not great, but not as terrible as the middle either. A big mistake to #2 and one other notable one to #10, had to take effort to relocate both times. Frustrated with #2, because I lost contact in the same Bermuda triangle zone as #7 the day before.

But altogether way more fun than yesterday and at least I contributed a few points to Team USA!!

Orienteering 57:24 [3]

NAOC Middle

The worst orienteering I've done in awhile. The first 6 controls were smooth, then got lost to 7 and then just couldn't figure anything out after that. My brain just couldn't figure out the puzzle required to get to the next control. Totally frustrating.

But in a way, I wasn't totally surprised. The reason I've been good at orienteering the past few years hasn't been some sort of magic. It's because I've put in the time both actually orienteering in the woods and thinking and analyzing maps before and afterwards. I haven't really been able to do either of those things this fall and not even as much as would be good for the past year, probably.

Sometimes I've been surprised and still had good races when I feel unprepared, but not today. The red eye flight straight to the race may also not have allowed all brain cylinders to be firing...

Running race 1:23:00 [4] 13.17 mi (6:18 / mi) +65m 6:12 / mi

Portland Half Marathon

Still not as large as the Birkie or anything, but a lot of people! Luckily was in the A wave and so starting really wasn't a problem. But seeing just a mass of people when the course double-backed on itself several times was impressive.

I came in 2nd woman in a time of just around 1:23 (not sure if chip times are posted yet, but should be very close to that). I was only 12s behind, but that was totally an unclosable gap over the last few miles. It looked like much further! I had contact and chatted with her after the big downhill and then again around mile 7. But when she sped up after that, I didn't follow, feeling pushed by the 6:20ish pace. And she must have just gained a few seconds every mile after.

I only really wanted the race to end with about 2 miles to go, but still, no huge slow-down, which is definitely nice. So many people were excited to see the first women go by, and tons were also cheering for me wearing my brand-new Reed singlet. The college doesn't have any NCAA sports, but a bunch of students, staff and faculty doing running stuff now and again. Will have to introduce the group to orienteering...
