Cycling 1:00:00 [1] 12.6 mi (4:46 / mi)

Running warm up/down 25:00 [1] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Running race 5:22 [4] 1.0 mi (5:22 / mi)

A track mile! Signed up last minute on Thurs for the inaugural Rose City Mile. One of the last mile races I've done was in front of the late Sir Roger Bannister (track @ Oxford was dedicated to him while I was there). This one had Alan Webb, American national record holder in the mile (3:46.91).

I was in the 2nd women's heat, having put down an expected time of 5:40. I quickly settled into 3rd off the start and stayed there for the first two laps. Then I passed on the curve the 2nd woman and on the back stretch the one who had been leading. I led the rest of the way, I think speeding up a tidge.

When I finished, turns out the woman in 2nd was only 4 months after giving birth! Super impressed with her. And Alan Webb's wife, Julia raced in the elite heat at 12 weeks pregnant finishing in 5:19. (Guess she made the Olympic trials but now won't go due to the pregnancy.)

Anyways, fun to do, think I had more speed in me, but hard to pace the first short effort I've done in awhile!!

Note

Am training. Organized an o-meet last Saturday and have a conference this week. Things are busy.

8 AM

Stroller jog/run 53:39 [2] 5.68 mi (9:27 / mi)

Mostly stroller jog - loaded stroller up with baby, baby's stuff, laptop, change of clothes + pumping stuff and headed out. Pretty heavy stroller. Dropped Sylvia off, ran to work. Ditched stroller and did final mile around canyon just running, then stopped by cafeteria for a bagel, breakfast bread and coffee (thank you Tango conference for opening cafeteria for brek this week!). Shower and into work at 9.15am.

Nice to get a run in the cool part of the day!

Strength 35:00 [1]

Chill Pilates. With a testing-out instructor. Not sure I really like her, because she's definitely on the lower-intensity side of things and I'd prefer more of a strength workout. That said, I also need to stretch, so maybe not a bad thing...
5 PM

Running intervals 42:52 intensity: (22:52 @1) + (20:00 @4) 5.28 mi (8:07 / mi)

Kinda wanted to go back mtn bike racing today, but 3 days with no running meant today had to get it in for WOC training! So home and then some intervals - aimed at incorporating uphills when possible, did 1, 3, 2, 4, 4, 3, 2, 1 minutes with half-ish rest.

Running 43:00 intensity: (23:30 @1) + (19:30 @4) 5.1 mi (8:26 / mi)

Inspired by Tyra's workout, did 3 x 1 mile. Not sure it would count as tempo, probably more interval-like. Did them on the Reed track, which is gravel and has a hill.

Times for miles according to my Garmin: 6.30, 5.59, 6.52.
What? Those times are all over the place. And yes, there is a hill on the track, but I'm going around ~4 times, so it's not as if I got all uphill sometimes and all down on others.

What seemed to be the case, and is really strange is that the Garmin thought I was going faster when going clockwise (as seen from above). I have no hypotheses to explain this behaviour, but I'm *sure* my miles were not a minute discrepant.

Note

Sylvia got dropped off at daycare! Didn't seemed phased at all when we left, more interested in the toys + other babies. Thankful for that, but we'll see how the report is upon return this afternoon...

Sit bones are also *way* sore, holy moly biking after not...
4 PM

Stroller jog/run 37:22 [2]

And daycare pickup stroller jog! Felt a wee bit silly stroller jogging sans baby on the way there, but needed the stroller for the way back!

Sylvia apparently had a good day there!

Strength 50:00 [1]

Pilates. Pretty good session with Mary. So nice to have some core strength again!
5 PM

Cycling 1:00:00 [1] 10.0 mi (6:00 / mi)

Cycling 33:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:15 / mi)

Monday night short track @ PIR!!

A mountain bike race? Yeah, I guess. Showed up barely in time to register, having biked there with the Reed crew and then went to the start line and go. Rode Suzy's pretty awesome mountain bike and used her old shoes. Came off my bike (once by falling at zero speed) probably 6 times, which slows you *way* down. Was in the women's 19+ beginner's category, Cat 3, and maybe finished mid-pack? Will have to see when results come out, really couldn't tell...

Note

Day last of family road trip! Twin Falls ID -> home! Stopped in Boise for a delightful brunch with Tom's aunt and partner. Sylvia enjoyed having some run-around-time instead of pure car. Also, aunt makes a mean french toast casserole.

Good to be home. Own bed/crib/playzone. Only 3 days until daycare starts too, eep!

Running 6:14 [1] 0.53 mi (11:46 / mi)

Orienteering 56:25 [2] 4.37 mi (12:55 / mi)

Early, early morning training at Medicine Bow. Really great to have streamers out to be running to and a course that kept me interacting with some of the alder groves. Thanks so so much to Mikell!

Saw a mom and baby moose early on in the course. The baby was adorable - mom bolted away upon my approach, I stopped looked at her and then saw her baby, closer to me. Mom trotted back to baby, which was not very good at walking yet and they wobbled off together. I backed up and went a different way.

Harder to keep pushing the pace without other around today, but did want to make it back before Sylvia woke up to have no milk, so that kept me going. The low light of very early morning made the visibility a bit tougher, so good training!

Running 3:38 [1] 0.37 mi (9:50 / mi)

Laramie, WY -> Twin Falls, ID. One of our longer drives. Now trying to get baby to sleep, which has been rougher with the non-schedule of these days.

Running 46:30 [2] 5.5 mi (8:27 / mi)

Preconference steady around the creak and Platte R. trails. Much, much better than yesterday at lunch time. Kinda nice to have the Strava segments to motivate a quicker pace here and there.

Running tempo 40:52 [3] 5.2 mi (7:52 / mi)

Oof, rough one. Tom and I are relay babysitting and conference attending. So workout during the lunchbreak, but it was HOT. (High as 90, not sure exactly what temp it was at 1:30pm when I went out).

Did 1 x 12 min tempo and attempted a second, but quite at 8 min when I was feeling crappy.

Then jogged into the bagel shop for lunch and nearly passed out at the counter. Had to sit there for ~10 min feeling faint and drinking cold water (probably should have been juice, but couldn't bring myself to stand up long enough to go get some after sitting).

Guessing it was a combo of heat, altitude and pushing hard when I'm not yet in the shape I kinda expect myself to be. (Tempo pace on Strava looks like 6.40 ish).

Note

Baby's first national park! Arches, which neither Tom nor I had been to either. We did two very chill < 1 mi hikes, down Main Street and then around the Windows/Double Arch area. Very neat, would love to go back and do some longer hikes! Was our first time in the framed baby carrier. Sylvia seemed a happy camper and it was relatively comfy for carrying however much she weighs these days.

Then drove to Denver. I-70 reaches 11,100 ft at one point and it was pouring rain. Not super fun driving (chains destroy roads), but sure it's beautiful if you can see more than 50 ft.

Running 9:05 [1] 0.93 mi (9:47 / mi)

Orienteering 20:11 [3] 2.56 mi (7:53 / mi) +2m 7:52 / mi

Red sprint at BSU campus from 2017 Gold Rush (US Champs)

Tori B. ran this in 19:22 for the actual race, so a bit off that time. But it is hard to push as hard when it's not a race and no one else is even around.

Orienteered pretty well, one small mistake, looking for 6 too early, before I went through the gate because I was reading ahead. Hard to balance the read-ahead and stay-in-touch sometimes.

Also think I could have had a slightly better route to #4, diagoling across the field S of the line instead of a more zig-zag route under the line.

17/250 sprint controls

Running 9:34 [1] 0.92 mi (10:24 / mi) +2m 10:20 / mi

Cool down, then back to Tom's aunt's for breakfast and then starting the day's road trip to Price, UT.

Running 6:29 [1] 0.37 mi (17:34 / mi) +24m 14:37 / mi

Orienteering 18:18 [2] 0.9 mi (20:20 / mi) +80m 15:56 / mi

1 through 8, 19, 18 of Red Middle from 2015 Gold Rush @ Gold Rush Hills (Idaho City)

Technical stuff! Forgot how really detailed this is due to the mining.

A bit iffy on 1 (remember I was in the race too). So much going on hard to place a small reentrant amongs many.

Too high to 2.

10/250 forest controls

Running 3:27 [2] 0.26 mi (13:08 / mi) +29m 9:47 / mi

Orienteering 15:29 [1] 0.95 mi (16:18 / mi) +57m 13:44 / mi

1 through 3 of the ultra-long course.

Found 3 tricky, an interesting shift of reentrants occurs.

13/250 forest

Running 5:35 [1] 0.61 mi (9:06 / mi)

Orienteering 54:03 [1] 2.79 mi (19:22 / mi) +130m 16:55 / mi

11-12-13-15 of ultra long to 17-16-15-14-13-12-11-10-9-20 of middle

Getting tired by the end for sure! And that was in the super-tricky mining-heavy section.

Didn't get 11 on a first pass, realized as I was approaching 12 so went back. On 13 ran too far down the road. 15 was hard to be sure I was at the right feature, but really checked and was.
