Orienteering 14:47 [3] 1.5 mi (9:51 / mi) +90m 8:18 / mi

Last Zero-O of the season at Mt. Tabor!

Realized there might be orienteering just as I was putting my ski boots on for a rxc workout, checked phone and yep! Change-o-plan!

Orienteering 1:14:12 [3] 7.5 km (9:54 / km)

BAOC A-meet Day 2: Calero County Park

This time Red, but ended up pre-running along with Greg and Carol. (Guaranteed getting to the airport on time, which is very nice!)

Told myself I had to be feistier since I was running a shorter course than yesterday and I think it worked! I did more contouring than yesterday, I think. Unsure if it was the fastest to #14 and 18, but wasn't bad at least.

Only two bobbles, but they weren't great. First, I parallel feature errored up a reentrant from 15 to 16 and then came out to a control on a tree, just as expected. But not my code! Eep! Ok, where is the trail, it's right there, hm, I'm quite close to it ah, ok, another tree 80m E...

Second bobble was right at the finish, #19. Basically I didn't see the cliff under the circle, came to it first and was totally bewildered by the absence of a control. Really, it's not here? Search, search. Then look at map. Ohhhhh. Scurry on.

Nice to have a more racing feel today, but this is totally different than NAOC style terrain. Ah well, got some good practice finding controls, reading a map on a run and it was fun, if tough! =) Thanks BAOC!

BAOC meet at Calero County Park

Up at 4am to catch a direct flight Portland -> San Jose. Whisked away from the airport and then time to orienteer!

Whoa hilly! Glad I didn't start too fast, that took a bit! Didn't feel too feisty out there, but I guess that's hard when it's this steep.

#1 - Lost some time thinking it might be possible to get through the green, it wasn't.
#3 - Moment of confusion as to where I came out on the stream as I couldn't sense the other branch, guessed I was too high and correct.
#7 - Distracted by someone else, looked first one yellow too low.
#11 - Bad route, better to approach in from the left.
#12 - Too low on the hillside. For how low I was the trail would have been the better option.
#15 - Too low, these contours are *big*.
#16 - Momentary indecision if I had passed trail while bombing down reentrant bottom when I came out in the flat, stopped, considered, continued on, found trail.
#17 - Non-ideal time to leave the lake bottom, should have stayed around the corner and past the fence, I think.
#18 - Boo, worst bit of the course. Searched in a one-too-early reentrant. Partly distracted by someone else going up it, partly I thought that it looked more like the contour form for the next reentrant (was reentranty all the way to the stream, unlike what the form line suggests? Maybe form line is trying to tell me where the hill starts?)
#20 - Should have read clue. I was looking for a thicket, not a downed tree.
#22 - Slog!!!

Rollerskiing 29:43 [1] 3.71 mi (8:01 / mi) +72m 7:33 / mi

Evening roller ski after an hour and a half of sorting out thesis students. I have three, one who will work on HNC as a dense molecular gas tracer, one who will work on star formation (still need to narrow quite a bit) and one on reflection nebulae. I don't know tons about the latter, but here goes!

Running 1:28:11 [2] 11.17 mi (7:54 / mi) +229m 7:25 / mi

Woke up and decided I really better turn the 8 mi plan into an 11 miler so I'm somewhat prepared for the half marathon in two weeks... a good run, felt ok for being the day after a 5k.

Running race 34:58 [2] 4.69 mi (7:27 / mi) +296m 6:14 / mi

Oof! Tough one, had cramps and a contact that was not well settled in my eye. I took out the contact around 3 miles, and then vision was not awesome, but at least my eye wasn't irritated. The cramps weren't fun though. To be honest, one of my least favorite races in recent memory, really not at all due to the race, just to my situation during it.

Evening core with Tom after a full day.

Introductory radiative transfer in class today. How photons escape (or don't!) from stellar atmospheres. Too bad if you're a photon at 6563 Angstroms in an A star.

Running 43:55 [1] 4.38 mi (10:02 / mi) +5m 9:59 / mi

Williamette Mission Park

Failed orienteering! Much confusion as to why it wasn't happening, luckily got the heads up before we wondered too much ourselves. So just went out for a little trail run around the place.

Tons of blackberries, also walnuts, and apples. But seriously, the blackberries could eat people, some were two stories high. Presumably the o-course wouldn't have sent us through them..

Drills 7:30 [1]

Chatted with a local lawyer, Steve on the way up to the start. He's done this race 10 out of 11 years it's happened, apparently, so got the lowdown on the course. Plus told him all about orienteering. =)

Pints to Pasta 10k, 4th overall woman

Holy moly, competition! Showed up to the start and there were two extremely skinny gals warm-up prancing around in their bun huggers and sports bra tops. Intimidation central! I really had no idea where I might fit into the mix here at a big race in Portland, but I saw that last year's times were really fast. But then I was warned that it was a very fast course too, so didn't know where that would put me...

And fast the course was- solidly downhill for the first mile, and probably net loss again for the second, thereafter mostly flat along the Williamette after crossing it on the Broadway bridge.

I started out with the lead pack of women, totally fine pace to keep up with skinies on the downhill, after all. =) Then things started breaking up in mile 2, I was with the girl in pink for a bit, then she pulled ahead and caught the girl in blue and kept moving. The girl in blue just steadily, steadily gained on me, but could still easily see her by the end of the race. Two guys passed me in the final two miles, and by pace I was slowing down a bit. So perhaps a bit too fast early, but fun to try to keep up with the leaders! =)

Running 56:38 [2] 6.92 mi (8:11 / mi) +107m 7:49 / mi

Longish effort with the roller skiing added on at the end. I'm racing a 10k tomorrow, so didn't want to push the pace or distance too hard. Only a mile shorter than the Springwater trail loop, but I guess good to have in the repertoire. It'll be named the Sellwood-Oaks Bottom loop!

Rollerskiing 19:33 [1] 2.67 mi (7:19 / mi) +50m 6:55 / mi

Rollerskiing at early o'clock around the neighborhood, very few cars, awesome.

Aerobics 44:31 [1]

And Zumba at the Reed Gym. Part of their Wellness at Work program, so it's all faculty/staff and not students, unlike the Toledo class which was nearly all students. About 8 women and instructor Vicki. Good times, great to have this so convenient to just happen every Fri lunch break!

Portland Trail Fall Series #1

Wow that's a lot of climb for an under 6 mile race. And a good chunk of it was right off the start. Headed up conservatively and then had a blast flying down the down hills. Ok job pacing and was ahead of the other women by ~5 minutes, but plenty of guys around to chase and try to stay ahead of!
