Running 20:00 [1]

Warm up around track before hurdle drills and warm down after turbo session, chatting with some triathletes.

Drills 15:00 [1]

Hurdle drills with the real hurdlers! Some good drills and some good advice. Need to work on keeping my hips square, keeping my trail leg knee high so ready for the next stride, and not leaning way over. Thanks Clara!

Cycling (Turbo) 14:00 [1]

Warm up and recovery between intervals.

Cycling 16:00 [4]

4 x 4 minutes on the turbo

Quads sore from yesterday's ride with Jess. So went for it, but not super-duper hard...

Wednesday Apr 29, 2009 #

Cycling 1:30:00 [2]

Jess's Garsington loop, with surprise, Jess! =) So good to cycle with her. Good fun, sunny times. Did Garsington hill an extra time at the end. For kicks.

Running 13:20 [1]

To gym, from lab, through parks. Gorgeous sunny day.

Drills 8:00 [1]

Hurdle drills with Clare and Helen.

Running 9:17 [5]

Track session! With Cathy and Clare and a guy whose name I don't know.
5 x (300, 200, 100 with 100 roll-on between each), 400 recovery between each set

Times:
57, 37, 15.4
59, 37, 15.0
58, 38, ?
59, 40, 15.5
57, 39, 16.0

The exciting bit was the full-out hailstorm we had from the 2nd to 5th sets. Wowzer. Soaked us through, so cotton t-shirts came off. Stung a whole lot. All the other track folk were hudling under by the locker rooms besides us long distance runners- elemental. But good steeplechase practise to have absolutely soaked through shoes!

Running 15:30 [1]

Recoveries between intervals.

Running 11:09 [1]

Back to lab.

Swimming 25:00 [2]

Swim with Tri club. In too slow a lane, which was frustrating. Still good to swim with others though!

Monday Apr 27, 2009 #

Running 12:51 [1]

Lab to gym, at busy-o'clock.

Cycling 20:00 [1]

Cycling on the nice bike in the gym. One for spinning, I think. Really could have used a fan on though, was sweating up a storm!

Cycling intervals 10:00 [4]

5 x 2 min on the gym bike, time to get leg strength, without pounding my poor, constantly-on-brink of injury legs!

Running 9:20 [1]

Gym to circuits.

Strength 48:00 [1]

Wow! Even started at 6.10 today, cool. And bigger group with the start of term. Fun, fun. Music on Jon's phone a bit hard to hear with so many though.

Running 5:31 [1]

Circuits back to lab- through the parks, which are lovely!! Such nice tulips out! Color, color, color on a grey day.

Sunday Apr 26, 2009 #

Running warm up/down 11:01 [1]

Warm-up. Hah! Legs feel way better today then they did yesterday. Nice. Despite a way early warm up, was completely unprepared when Ian came in (sorry!). Hadn't cleared or checked and didn't know what our team number was....

Orienteering race 26:23 [4] 3.4 km (7:46 / km)

Varsity relay.

Not a terrible run, bit messy to 3 and 10, again bearing mistakes, but less costly on a less vague area! Not a bad run, did crunch the ankle (first time with out the brace). So guess may keep wearing it for the foreseeable future...

Orienteering 24:37 [1]

Collecting controls. Had major issues finding one on the men's course actually. Again, think a more accurate bearing would have helped...

Swimming 23:00 [2]

300 warm up
200-100-50 x 2
200 cool down
100 kick

Saturday Apr 25, 2009 #

Running warm up/down 13:18 [1]

Good warm up and stretch- right calf was really hurting just sitting around/walking, so wanted to make sure I was well warmed up so as not to pull it!

Orienteering race 58:35 [4] 6.6 km (8:53 / km) +75m 8:24 / km

Epping Forest Varsity Match, Women's A.

Mistake-ridden, I think is the best description of my race! Ug. Such a bummer to have a bad one for varsity! Luckily, didn't actually matter as Liz-Ruth-Jenn pulled through for the team and actually all 5 of us beat the first Cambridge gal- clean sweep!

I wasn't consistently smooth at all, although I had a few spiked controls I was pleased with. Then there were the big mistakes:
(4)- 2.5 minutes: a depression in a particularly low-visibility area- I went back and forth between a lake and a open patch a few times before finally getting it- lots of others had issues here too
(11)- 2 minutes: should have just run all the way up the path and attacked from the road- a far safer option, and probably easier than running uphill through junk, others also had issues with this one
(14)- 7 minutes: ouch! I just must have been really off on my bearing. There's nothing else that makes sense at all. was over around some other clearing poking around bushes for a long while, before deciding to come out to the road, which was *way* further away then in should have been. Still wasn't quick finding it after that. So, major lesson: take a few more seconds on a good baring in vague forest. Minor lession: if you're supposed to be within 50m of a road, should probably actually notice it...
(15-16-17)- 1 minute on each. Ug. Needed to regroup a little bit better after the big mistake... being a bit messy and unfocused.

I think the major lesson was the need for a bit more patience out there. Being better on my bearings would have saved most of the mistakes.

Running warm up/down 8:26 [1]

Warm-down with Seba to get ice-cream money from the village hall. We may have taken a wrong turn and then had to run back up a big hill. My mistakes didn't end with the final control even! =)

Orienteering 14:55 [1]

Collecting controls. Amazing how the last 3 controls which I was messy on where so much easier having been to them before/having enough oxygen to my brain...

Swimming 30:00 [2]

400
2 x 200
4 x 100
8 x 50
100

Good stuff, feel so much better swimming now! It's amazing.

Running 53:00 [1]

Easy club run with Lucy and Matt, around Nature Reserve 1.5 times. Quite slow, but probably good for my body to get used to running without tons of stress on it! Problem hamstring twinged a few times at the end, which is worrying, but don't think it'll be a big problem. Achilles and patellar tendons seem happy enough today at least!

Sunday Apr 19, 2009 #

Running (Treadmill) 21:00 [2]

Ah panic! Got an email about observing that I needed to respond to immediately. That left me 1hr to: workout, shower, dress, and oh, pack and vacate hotel room. So quick workout!

Legs ok, but achilles a bit painful, so kept the treadmill flat.

Cycling 10:00 [2]

Oooo, nice exercise bike at the hotel gym! So quiet. How does it do that? Magnetic resistance or something? There was definitely no fan.

Quads a bit sore...

Saturday Apr 18, 2009 #

Running 13:45 [1]

Warm up around a block outside the stadium x 3. Right achilles tendon hurt, but not terribly, and knee felt fine, which made me happy!

Running race 10:28 [5] 3.0 km (3:29 / km)

Penn + Cornell v. Oxford + Cambridge

3k flat
Think my previous best was 10:42, so this is a good improvement, even if not amazingly fast. Was so cool to run at Franklin field- massive, massive stadium. I wasn't one of the scoring runners from Achilles, but the two girls that were dropped out... It was super hot out (ok only 80F=~26C), but still, really hot and sunny compared to what I'm used to!

Running 5:00 [1]

Cool down with Helen to the dining hall. Left hamstring tight and right achilles very painful- ouchie!!! Ice, here I come...

Swimming 15:00 [1]

200-400-400
Recovery swim, nice to be in the water, move the muscles without legs complaining with every step. Plus sauna afterwards. Awesome!

Friday Apr 17, 2009 #

Swimming 10:00 [1]

Nice empty pool at Penn- 50m, but chopped in 2. Was enjoying swimming, but right shoulder was feeling a bit wierd, so only did 10 min.

Running 20:00 [1]

Slow running on the treadmill, but knee didn't feel awful, so that's good. Will do the flat 3k tomorrow, I think. No use reinjuring myself just before varsity orienteering!

Thursday Apr 16, 2009 #

Swimming 33:00 [2]

Gosh, glad I have swimming as a back up!
200 warm up
2 x 400
2 x (50 x 4)
150 cool down

Then off in the bus to Penn for the rest of the day.

Wednesday Apr 15, 2009 #

Note

Bah. My knee hurts. Felt it at the end of yesterday's session. I've had this pain before- right lower than the knee cap, between knee and tibia? Likely some tendon/ligament there that's strained. Will go see the Cornell trainer and probably aquajog/swim for the next few days.... hopefully will be fine to steeplechase on Sat still!

Swimming 33:41 [1]

Some aquajogging at the beginning, but even that was hurting my knee. So tried 50 of kick, also hurt. So swam. Just kept going, didn't feel like counting laps. I couldn't even tumble-turn push off with the unhappy knee. Please let this not be a problem for Sat....

Note
(injured)

Yay for universities which take care of their athletes! Got to see the track and field trainer just now about my knee- says it's patellar tendonitis, which makes sense. So rest, ice and quad stretching for me. Will have to see if it clears up enough for Sat. Unsure.

Running 23:00 [1]

Warm up around the track with Ian K. joined by Charlotte Roach who was complaining up a storm. It's not like it's so bad here. Ok, so the coaches don't coach us. But do they ever at Oxford or Cambridge? Maybe it's a bit extra disorganized because we're a bit helpless to organize ourselves in a totally foreign place. Still...

Warm down with more long-mid distance folks.

Drills 4:00 [1]

Some hurdle drills after a good long stretch.

Running 11:29 [5]

Bam! And time for some speedwork!

4 x 400 w/ 1 min rest:
72
74 (w/ 4 hurdles)
74
77 (w/ hurdles)

4 x 400 w/ 1 min rest:
75
80 (w/ hurdles)
78
81 (w/ hurdles)

Final 400: 78

Woo! Getting quicker. Although I clearly faded through the session. Hurdles coach had some good recommendations: 1) I need to not stutter before the hurdles, which I think I can avoid if I work on my off-side more 2) stay on the toes!! I land heavily smack on my heel, this pretty much stops me and make it hard to keep going. So when I land from the hurdle, need to be on the ball of my foot, then should carry through more naturally. 3) Be confident really landing on one foot. I tend to slap my trail leg down as soon as possible to help with the next stride. But this actually just cuts the next stride way short.

Things to work on! Should drill lead-leg only and trail leg only both sides.

Swimming 25:00 [2]

Lovely. Just waltzed into the Cornell pool, no one checked any ID or anything, although I think we're allowed to use the pool anyways...

200 warm up
400
2 x 50-100-200-100-50
50 warm down

Two people sharing the lane, but not that bad. One was training for his lifeguard test, the other for a 400m-swim triathlon. Americans are chatty! Never had anyone at Oxford I've shared a lane with actually even say hi...

First time in the pool other than the Iffley one in a loong time. It was colder water and flip turns were off at the beginning.

Monday Apr 13, 2009 #

Running 28:57 [3]

Right... this was supposed to be an easy 'jog'. But pretty much everyone I went on this 'jog' with can run under 16 minute 5ks. So they're idea of jog was just a bit faster than mine... Not quite a tempo pace, but hard for an easy one for sure!

Strength 20:00 [1]

Monday = circuits!

So circuited, by the track, watching people go by. Didn't want to do jumpy stuff as my quad is sore and want to have a good session tomorrow.

Sunday Apr 12, 2009 #

Running 58:47 [2]

Woo! Look at me run! I feel like I haven't run for this long (non-o) since hmm... awhile! Cool stuff. Cold day though- full on tights and long top and gloves and not too warm. Started with Stephi, but she wasn't feeling well and turned around after 20 min. Out Strinham, back Organ Hill.

Legs a bit sore, but not too bad. Want to gear up for a good session Tues at the Cornell track.

Cycling (recovery) 20:00 [1]

Easy cycle to get the legs moving. More out of boredom sitting in the hotel and my roomate going than feeling like its helpful training. Got a good stretch in afterwards though!

Saturday Apr 11, 2009 #

Running 33:00 [2]

Joggeroo at home. Nice to be able to run the day after a race and not have anything so sore it needs babying! Woo!

That said, a bit tired. =)

Strength 11:00 [1]

10 min abs, 1 min back stuff.

The shower afterwards made me late for the easter egg hunt with little cousin! But he'd only found 1 by then...

Friday Apr 10, 2009 #

Running 36:00 [1]

Warm up before the race, with lots of stretching interspersed. Cool down with Cathy after the race (who was chattering up a storm- think she was very psyched to beat me!) around the Yale Bowl twice.

Running race (Steeplechase) 11:14 [5]

3k steeplechase: representing Achilles (joint Oxford and Cambridge team) against a joint Yale and Harvard team

Not a bad race considering my lack of good running training this year. Pretty pleased. Did come in last which is a bit of a bummer, but the pace for this 3k is equivalent to a 7:29.3 2k, which is just a bit slower than what I ran for BUSA 2k last year- 7:24.6. Think I'll definitely be able to improve!

Thursday Apr 9, 2009 #

Running 30:00 [1]

Easy run around New Haven. Gorgeous day. Didn't know where to go to avoid cars though. Don't like cars!

Achilles are still a bit worked from Tuesday's intervals, maybe they'll clear up for tomorrow??

Wednesday Apr 8, 2009 #

Swimming 30:00 [2]

200 warm up
50 with leg buoy, attempting a drill
400 with leg buoy
50-100-200-100-50 x 2
100 warm down

So 1750 total. Didn't time anything...

Calves a bit sore from yesterays work. But now is the time to rest for Friday!

Tuesday Apr 7, 2009 #

Running 31:00 [1]

Morning track session- last one before Friday's steeplechase!

Warm up, warm down, and laps between pieces. Sun came out at the end and was pretty. We're a bit spoiled for good weather at the moment, but not complaining!

Running (Steeplechase) 13:40 [5]

1200, 4.48
1200, 4.35
800, 3.00
400, 85

In the second lane, with 5 hurdles per lap, where the barriers should be. Feeling more comfy over the hurdles, but not sure I'm carrying my momentum through well on my landing. Will have to ask someone about this who actually hurdles.

Not amazing times, but should actually get around the 3k course. Will not be able to start fast though. At the most, I think I can hope for 90 s 400s, but on the 'chase, you can't really judge this unfortunately as the laps are some strange length because of the water jump...

Drills 3:30 [1]

Hurdle drills!

Monday Apr 6, 2009 #

Swimming 30:00 [3]

200 warm up
4 x 100 hardish (one of them was 1.35)
3 x 50 kick (practice butterfly kick for turns)
100-200-100 x 2
100 cool down

Running 34:00 [2]

Short pre-circuits around Uni Parks and New College Sports ground. Feel ok, but something irritated on the top right of my IT band.

Strength 48:00 [1]

OUOC circuits- outside for the first time. Need to make running bits shorter.

Sunday Apr 5, 2009 #

Swimming 32:00 [2]

And swimming! Did some kicking at the beginning, then Rich came and set the following session:
200 warm up
400
400
4 x 50
4 x 50
200 cool down

Good stuff! Didn't time any of it, but getting much more natural in the pool. 50s were in about 45s.

Running 22:00 [1]

5 laps warm up, 3 warm down, 1 each in between intervals, maybe an extra to put out hurdles?

Sunshiny day! Wonderous!

Running intervals 9:00 [5]

3 x 800, with hurdles at each of the steeplechase points: 3.12, 3.03, 2.55

First time really doing steeplechase hurdles- less than a week before the big race. Yipes!

First one was slow and in my trainers. Next two in my steeplechase spikes, and felt better and better. Should do one more session like this before leaving!

Saturday Apr 4, 2009 #

Running 10:00 [1]

Warm up joggeroo.

Orienteering race 48:57 [4] 5.9 km (8:18 / km) +270m 6:45 / km

Cleve Hill local event- Blue

Nice pretty open area, not that far from Oxford! Good stuff.

But not a truly awesome run. 4 + min error on a silly depression for number 5. Could have focused better going into it, to be honest. Ok in some of the detailed bits, but tired for the hill climbs! Not surprised as I've been training hard...

Friday Apr 3, 2009 #

Swimming 28:19 [3]

Woo morning swim! Legs hurt so badly in bed, really didn't want to get up. The extra sleep maybe helpful though!

Still got to the pool by 8.15 or so and did:
3.26- 200 warm up
13.08- 750 hard
1.46- 100 easyish
1.40- 100 hard
1.39- 100 hard
3.42- 200 easy
2.58- 100 kick

Wanted to do the 750 hard to see how fast my swimming is compared to times from BUSA sprint triathlon from last year. I would have been well back from Clare, who's on the varsity swimming team who did it in 9.34 (wow!), but in front of Oxford's second woman, who swam 14.34. So not terrible, but for sure room for improvement! If I want to do it in 12 min, need to swim 100 in 1.36, something to work towards.

Legs feel much better after the swim!

Thursday Apr 2, 2009 #

Running 23:00 [1]

At the track, warm up, warm down, and stuff in between intervals.

Running intervals 10:00 [5]

2 x 1 k (3.32,3.31)
2 x 400m (85,?)

Blah. Not so fast, but legs feeling way tired from football yesterday, and wasn't running with anyone, so no one to push me.

Put my steeplechase spikes on for the 400s, felt fast at first, but then tired. 2nd 400 I did 2 hurdles in too!

Cycling (Turbo) 33:00 [1]

Cycling intervals 21:00 [4]

7 x 3 min
Again, good stuff! Legs burned for sure....

Wednesday Apr 1, 2009 #

Running 10:16 [2] 1.5 mi (6:51 / mi)

6 laps warm up before hurdle drills

Drills 10:00 [1]

Hurdle drills and some practising hurdling. Not too bad. Even on my off side doesn't feel to awkward, but I do think I'm clearing the hurdles by unessessary amounts...

Field Sports 50:00 [3]

Astro vs. Council football- 11 a side!

Good fun! Forgot how much fun football (=soccer) can be! Tiring too. I was the only girl though.
