5 PM

Cycling 28:06 [1] 4.73 mi (5:56 / mi) +137m 5:27 / mi

Baby pick up via bike again.

Note

The plan for this week:

Feel like I'm healthy, at least for now, which is great! Will try to keep getting in a decent amount of sleep to stay that way. Feel like I need to start trending toward a little more high-intensity work, felt kinda without a higher gear at sprint camp. Think I should do a 3k time trial to see where I'm at. Maybe next weekend

Mon - 11 am: 2 x 10 min tempo, noon: Pilates
Tues - day care drop-off intervals
Wed - noon- Pilates
Thurs - day care drop-off: light hills
Fri - easy jog, circuits
Sat - AM: half marathon; PM: night-O
Sun - ski? depending on weather/energy....

Looks like I'll probably miss both the Feb. mileage goal by ~10 mi and hour goal by about 3-4h. But those are largely explained by illness and so whatever. Suppose a bit is explained by work grabbing intended training times, so will try to keep on alert for that too...

Running 54:18 intensity: (34:18 @1) + (20:00 @3) 6.54 mi (8:18 / mi)

Oaks bottom loop in snow flurries! Pilates instructor called in sick, so didn't rush it. Got 2 x 10 min tempo in, but didn't push too hard, because do think I've got a bit more of the cold remnants to get over.

Strength 23:18 [1]

And Pilates-type stuff in the mat room afterwards. Charlotte hadn't heard that the instructor was sick, so we did core and chatted together for this, which made it way more fun!
5 PM

Cycling 28:18 [1] 4.73 mi (5:59 / mi) +124m 5:32 / mi

Baby pickup via bike. Hard uphill with her in the trailer on the way home!

Sunday Feb 24, 2019 #

9 AM

Running 1:32:08 [2] 12.07 mi (7:38 / mi) +207m 7:15 / mi

Yeah! Woke up to a dusting of snow even down here in Portland, so was pretty! Felt pretty good on this long run, although still a little bit bonus snotty from the cold.

Did a Milwaukie meander before bike path to Oaks Bottom and back. Then, team call while eating recovery calories... =) But seriously, great to have the team calls, always feel more inspired to train hard after them!!

10 AM

XC skiing 1:15:44 [2] 8.57 mi (8:50 / mi) +221m 8:11 / mi

Family ski @ Teacup. Sylvia on my back, lots of back and forth to Tom who was classic skiing. We did the big outer loop. Soft snow made harder by being +20 lb or so. Beautiful!!

XC skiing 29:12 [2] 3.88 mi (7:32 / mi) +147m 6:44 / mi

Then a little ski on my own. Felt much lighter and faster!

Ran into my ski friend from childhood, high school hood and college who now also lives here in Portland. She has a 9 month old named Svea that she was also skiing with on her back!! We live on opposite sides of the city, but gotta connect more often! Especially as we get the youngsters out skiing in future years!

11 AM

Running 26:17 [1] 3.0 mi (8:46 / mi) +11m 8:40 / mi

Extra thesis meeting stole a bit of this time, but we really had to get to the bottom of something. Anyways, a little joggeroo. Legs still feel a bit blah from illness (quick to feel lactic acid).

Aerobics 45:02 [1] 0.64 mi (1:10:22 / mi) +1m 1:10:01 / mi

And gympa! But was more core than usual this time, a little less jumping around. Still great stuff! Felt better than expected given how the jog felt. Push ups almost killed me though...

Thursday Feb 21, 2019 #

7 AM

Stroller jog/run 37:50 [1] 4.39 mi (8:37 / mi) +112m 7:59 / mi

Up and at it! Stroller jog in, nothing extra as had a colleague's bio lecture to attend (peer mentoring).

Strength 45:00 [1]

Ok! At least got to most of Pilates today, my cold is fading away happily. Was hoping to get in a run, but now that seems unlikely, argh!

Monday Feb 18, 2019 #

Note

And another cold. Or the same one, just back with a vengeance after Sprint Camp? Who really knows...

But Sprint Camp was really fun, so glad the cold wasn't too miserable during it!! Great training and racing and good for me to feel the competition from Siri being very close in each of the 4 races (and getting me by 10s on the last one!). Awesome!

Note

S sick again. Just a cold, but those often still give her fevers and so home from daycare. And so the parents scramble.

Wednesday Feb 13, 2019 #

Strength 35:00 [1]

Lunchtime Pilates. Really hard on Wed to stay for the whole time, because I like eating lunch and teaching at 1.10pm cramps the time.

But got good work in while there.

Also, another cold. Seems pretty mild so far, going to keep it easy to try to be ok for Sprint Camp.

Wait, what? I was supposed to go to SSW! Plans changed due to some hard to avoid works stuff eating up Fri travel time and then American changing my flight home by 3 hours making it not work to race Sunday, but that change also meant they would refund my fare... sad to miss warmer, fun dessert times. Hope it won't be to chilly in Vancouver, or too hard to get there through snopocalypse Seattle.... Our plan is to stay in Tacoma Fri night, drive the rest of the way Sat morning to get there Sat midday for the first SI race. Leaving after second race on Sun, because we don't have Pres day off and want to get back in time for sanity.

Running 47:03 [2] 6.08 mi (7:44 / mi)

Rainy run, but figured can't fall behind further on Feb training goals! So out into it! Rainy enough that it was better sans glasses. Sauna'ed upon return briefly, nice to get fully warm!

Monday Feb 11, 2019 #

Strength 35:00 [1]

Gave my first quiz this morning. Perhaps too hard, will see when I grade. One student didn't stop when I asked everyone to. I didn't realize they were still working until I started to leave and they scampered to hand their quiz in. Not impressed.

Crosstrainer 20:00 [2]

Icky day out (little above freezing + rain), so crowd in the cardio room. All treadmills taken when I got there, but the super-elliptical was free. So on that for the first time in awhile.

Running 15:00 [2] 2.08 mi (7:13 / mi)

And then a treadmill run once one freed up. Felt pretty good and cruise-y down to 7min/mi on the flat!

Sunday Feb 10, 2019 #

10 AM

XC skiing 10:58 [1] 1.33 mi (8:15 / mi) +28m 7:44 / mi

Skiing!! Drive was easier than expected (and thanks Tom, who drove and let me read about Exoplanets + galaxy velocity dispersion distribution functions).

Got up to Meadows nordic, figured out this and that and this and that (lots of stuff for ski-o, plus lots of stuff for taking a toddler skiing + trying to keep happy + fed).

Skied a little to warm up and then helped Sylvia ski. She seemed to really like it, we were just limited by my back - our mode of skiing is her between my legs with my hands under her armpits for support.

XC skiing 9:22 [1] 1.34 mi (6:59 / mi) +1m 6:58 / mi

More warming up because the map needed a trail added.

Ski-O 25:19 [3] 3.1 mi (8:10 / mi) +86m 7:31 / mi

Woo ski-o! Much fun! We had great snow for it. Had to think hardest to #1, but there were other choices to make out there to. And cuts weren't fast, but also not impossible - ample snow and about 10" down through some fluff seemed to be pretty hard snow.

XC skiing 21:24 [2] 2.98 mi (7:11 / mi) +99m 6:31 / mi

Sylvia was clearly hankering for a nap, but it's also a shame to drive 3h and not get at least an hours ski in. So did one more big lap and we headed home.

Next time: remember adult food. (Also: SI stick.)

Packed:
Sylvia: applesauce pouch, 2 other pouches, sippy cup, melts, 2 cheese sticks
Parents: coffee
Yup, we stole some of her cheese sticks...

Note

So predicted snowpocalypse didn't really materialize for Portland, except it really was dangerous driving at early a.m. on the East side. I drove to pick up a student for an exam and couldn't get going easily at two intersections so put on chains for the way into Reed. Worth it. But not needed 2h later.

Proctored the junior qualifying exam for physics from 9am-3pm after picking up students starting at 7:30am (didn't want those who lived off-campus to not have a safe way in, I knew I could put on chains easily, wasn't sure they would have them). Then we went to a baby shower. And there was not time for a workout. =(

12 PM

Aerobics 44:51 [2] 1.61 mi (27:51 / mi)

Good step aerobics/circuits session. Really not quite sure which to characterize it as, since it's both. Some good 'cardio' as it gets called, but def also some strength, including plyos.

Running 20:00 [2] 2.5 mi (8:00 / mi)

Then afterwards, scampered to the treadmill to smush in a bit of running into the day!

Thursday Feb 7, 2019 #

7 AM

Stroller jog/run 35:11 intensity: (18:11 @1) + (17:00 @4) 4.39 mi (8:01 / mi) +116m 7:24 / mi

Stroller jog with a bundled toddler on the way to daycare and without her on the way back. Did some intervals 2 min, 3 min x 3 with half rest. Except first three minute interval was first interrupted by crying, then once mittens reestablished on hands, ended up extended to 5 minutes, because crying continued and figured best thing was just to get her inside at daycare.

Running 14:03 intensity: (9:03 @1) + (5:00 @4) 1.67 mi (8:25 / mi) +72m 7:25 / mi

Wow, that's a good way to feel much stronger! Ditch the jogging stroller! Did final set of 2, 3 minute intervals around the neighborhood. Then quick shower and in for a 9am meeting.

Wednesday Feb 6, 2019 #

12 PM

Strength 37:00 [1]

Pilates starting a bit late and then skipping the end because class at 1.10 to teach.
3 PM

Running 24:08 [1] 2.72 mi (8:52 / mi) +14m 8:44 / mi

A better-than-nothing run squished between teaching and seminar. Cold out for here!

Tuesday Feb 5, 2019 #

Note

Training plans today and yesterday thwarted by S being sick, needing to get her to the doctor, pick up prescriptions and keep home from daycare. Maybe I'll get in a smidge of core if there is any oomph at the end of the day...

11 AM

Running 48 [3]

Sunday Feb 3, 2019 #

2 PM

Running 1:22:53 [2] 11.12 mi (7:27 / mi) +166m 7:07 / mi

Long run, crossed Sellwood bridge and ran north along the river. I think I had to stop only once this whole time for a car. Love the bike paths!!

Saturday Feb 2, 2019 #

3 PM

Running hills 55:36 intensity: (43:36 @1) + (12:00 @4) 6.19 mi (8:59 / mi) +219m 8:06 / mi

Did 3x quick up all the hills on the route.

Friday Feb 1, 2019 #

Note

Definitely made 100 mi goal for Jan with 140 miles, didn't quite make time goal with 28.5h instead of intended 30h. Still, much higher and just better volume than I've done recently and so I'm pleased.

The tougher mission will be keeping the trend up in this busy spring semester. But there's a plan to fit in a workout to each school day:
Mon: run before Pilates, Pilates
Tues: Stroller jog to daycare
Wed: Pilates only
Thurs: Stroller jog to daycare or morning run afterwards
Fri: Run before circuits

With that, Wed is essentially my day off. And then weekends need to get the races/longer workouts in. Figure hills, intervals and tempos can fit in during-the-week runs. Here goes!
