spiked:14/17c shoes: Silva rubber stops

Training at Littlechilds with JWOC hopefuls. The rain felt good, perhaps a little too good.

Fine granite navigation in the rain.

Massive stack entering the second control circle, managed to get an egg on BOTH shins, a corked thigh and a bloody fingernail. 10/10 for specky.

ITB felt OK

Orienteering race 2:23:04 [3] 9.0 mi (15:54 / mi) +180m 14:58 / mi
shoes: Silva SG Norway

Bothwell - First time on map, lived up to Paul P's descriptions.

Not good from the off. Decided to use the compass which I don't normally carry with me to 1. Spent 2 mins trying to make the track I found ' fit' the map. turned around and there was the control between two 'knolls'..

2. Decided to go for a real long 'run', nearly off the map on the way to two. Crossed the fence, had a brain fade and convinced myself that the fence was not on the map as it was on the edge of the logging area. Found the 'new' track and proceeded to run to the junction past the 5-6 straight line stil loking for a fence...duh.

Had to turn around and slog back up the hill to find two, in the gully where it was supposed tp be.

3. Soon realised that off-track running was probably not a good option, so stuck to the tracks until 7, feeling pretty good with running, knee still buggered from Easter. Sandstone cliffs made a nice change from the granite boulders I've been staring at the last couple of weekends.

8. Was for me 'the bitch leg' as others have called it. Went right to avoid teh thick green in the steep gully as you do. Slogged across a paddock full of stones and up across the fence to the marsh. Proceeded to go over the hill convincing myself that teh 'thicket' I'd seen was the first one on th emap and kept looking for the second...not good..went back to the first thicket..there it is!

No porblems coming home..used the compass.

All in all good training for compass work, but a real slog and made some stupid errors. I think I will not take pain killers next time before an event..however that means I probably won't be able to run.

A 430 km round trip for a slog through bracken fern with mainy hidden fallen logs..and did anyone see those big holes in theground that looked like they were going to swallow you up?

Setting Controls at Livelys Bog.

Heat, tea tree, cutting grass and smoke took it out of me ..or was it the Bundy's last night?

Orienteering race 1:47:38 [4] *** 8.1 km (13:17 / km) +405m 10:38 / km
spiked:17/19c shoes: Silva SG Norway

Worlds End for Day 3.. The long walk up to the top of the hill in the sun was an omen for the long run ahead..yes it was an epic..felt at one point I was in one of those old western films with teh spectacular views from the top of the hills..one of them I was standing on top of when I realised I should be on top of the hill to the left across the steep gully..bugga..only ended up 2 minutes behind the leader on this leg..don't know how. Had a brain fade in the heat about number 9 when Mike Dowling cruised past and ran up the wrong watercourse thinking it was the massive dry creek on the map..another 8 minutes down! arrgh...who put these hills here? beutiful country..amazing vegetation that grows here in very very dry country..yes Goyder this was not suitable for cropping and probably not grazing either. And oh yes the sprint up the finish chute to the end.. Felt strong throughout the course..need to improve on hill climbs though and not just head for the first saddle I see.

Orienteering race 1:39:42 [4] 9.1 km (10:57 / km) +325m 9:18 / km
shoes: Silva SG Norway

buggered up the start, once in the rhythm just kept going..long legs and lots of open across the top of the plateau..more up and down up down up down..what were those pine trees?..look very much like south esk pines to me..dry and dusty..saw two tawny frogmouths. yeah...

Orienteering race 1:42:08 [4] *** 9.6 km (10:38 / km) +365m 8:56 / km
spiked:19/21c shoes: Silva SG Norway

A bit slow out of the blocks for Day 1 of Easter..well it was 10k in a foreign state. Starting with Paul P through me off a bit at 1 and went the safe option to the control round the ridge. Went too high on 7 and miscounted the number of dry watercourses..trying to look for one witha rockface..SA rockfaces are just lines of busted rock in the dust..Pretty happy with my speed until number 12 when my knee went from uner me just at the start of the long leg to 13..went the high route around the spurs..probably better off going the up down up down up down round and down route.
