Course: Long 11.1 km http://www.gregjflynn.byethost17.com/maps/show_map...

Long on Karakeke. again once I started, just felt heavy and slow, due to that feel asleep a little going to 2, but there wasn't much of a up and down, more of a big flat area....on the way to 4 I saw Darren behind me, went way right around the gorse on 5, and Darren must have gone left and got to the control at the same time. Tried keeping up on 6, but died going up the gentle slope, only to come into the circle and Darren looking confused saying something about the clearing being too close, I knew we were in the depression before, ignored him and nailed the control (that felt good) then on the way to 7 Darren was going left but I held my line straighter and was going perfectly into the control, then about 20m beforehand without seeing it I all of sudden changed my mind as to which way the contour were and went looking at the end of a spur, heard Darren punch the control, turned around and it was right behind me grrrr, never saw him again after that. Was confused going into the pivot for the first time and then started to struggle through 10 and 11, slightly off on 13 and confused myself again going back to the pivot, 17 I missed the parallel detail in between (through depression onto ridge with control on ridge behind) so stopped early. Again confused at pivot. WHY HAVE WATER NOT AT CONTROLS!!!!!!!!!!!! I fucken hate that. Lots more detail going into 23 then struggled some more out of 24, got to the farmland a felt a bit better, 25, 26 ok, then started feeling a bit better, put the hammer down a little bit but didn't even think about route choice and went straight so reckon I've lost time on 27, plus got pushed right by the fallen trees in the way. 28-30 all good, then the massive finish sprint, started way too fast and was trying not to spew from half way, thought I was going to loose my streak but only Tane got close and made it 3/3 for the weekend, salvaged something.

Just not enough terrain strength and speed work to be competitive at the moment, but not too far off and managed 3(4 counting OY) weekends of racing in a row without too much problems, (achilles and calves slightly tight) so happy about that. Time to have a couple of days rest, shoot some deer for the wedding and get into some choice base work, actually looking forward to hopefully being able to enjoy some long runs this summer, and smashing Neil when he arrives, then winning the green jersey at sprint the bay, thats right the challenge has been laid

Course: Middle 8.5 km 110 m http://www.gregjflynn.byethost17.com/maps/show_map...

Middle, ah well sort of. Again started off just feeling heavy, and instantly knew I was in for a tough day in this stuff. Was getting the oing ok, confused myself a little going back to the first pivot for the 2nd time as I started reading going to 8 (down into depression, up steep slope, through another depression and up another slope...) also lost a few sec on 9 as I couldn't see the control. Leaving 12 I turned around and saw Brent climbing the fence, bugger. 13 I was a little more to the left than I though and had to hook into the control, 15 slight left as well, then just as I had got through the un-mapped lake, Brent went swimming into it and caught me at 17, was behind him from there, but did a heap of my own checking until he finally pulled away leaving the pivot for the 3rd time. I got highly confused at the pivot for the last time with the extra control on the printed descriptions, took a few sec to check to make sure I hadn't missed a control and look at the descriptions on the map. Thought my rein as sprint finish king was under fire when I ran into the middle of the gorse before the finish line but managed to get another.

Overall just too slow, felt heavy and lacking any extra spark, definitely slower than last Saturday.

Cool down back to the cars, and a bit of a jog around as calves felt like they were trying to do a magic act and turn into concrete

Legs felt heavy from the get go, and never felt like I got going, didn't see much option on the long leg apart from cutting the felled areas but took those as they looked, Matt went past me on the road, just too fast, then hit the green shit, was super slow and struggle to get through it, happy to pop out close to where I thought I was, pretty simple to the map change, although Matt passed me again in the green. 7 was in some green stuff as well and Matt passed me again right before the control, and took off, got out to the open and could see Matt off on some hill looking lost, 8-9 ok and Matt passed me AGAIN on the way to 10, going in, went off the vege boundary, up through a sort of re-entrant, over a hill in the middle of it, and onto a ridge, not really any re-entrant close by (well in the 2m visibility we had) was definitely on the ridge and went back and forwards a couple of times, seeing Matt, Magnus, Adien and Dom, decided to bail to the road, and came back in off the hill on the other side, felt like I went over a hill and onto a ridge, again nothing, had a quick look either side and then just went west, and fell over it, called out but only Dom heard lost lots of time here. stuffed up going into 11 as well, seem odd. Got to drinks same time as Aiden, then I went round open he went straight and was faster, 12 was dodgy as well, contours everywhere, 13 just went up the big hill, then 14 again was whacked, seemed miles away and nothing made sense plus the big open area not on the map. Rest of the course was ok, was confused on 18, think there should be another contour between those 2 hills, and also started to die after 23, but managed to pull it together in the finish and take out the split even after Matt had given up and jogged to the last control to have a crack at it.

Someone really should have protested that course, 10 was bingo and how the hell the person putting the control out was confident of its placing is a mystery, also the area 12-14 was rubbish as well, there is a whole hill system missing in the white right next to it
