FLYING PIG A-Meet/ US Middle Distance Championships - CArter Caves State Park, Kentucky: Green
10.05am: A much nicer course than yesterday. The terrain was much less thorny. Pretty straight forward navigation. 1-2 went a bit lower than I thought and hit bottom of ditch instead of top and had to come back up hill a bit. Clean through 8. 8-9 started off well on bearing, then for some reason headed down hill and found the ditches 100m before mine. Silly mistake. Clean the remainder of controls. Enjoyed the course a lot, just need to lose some lbs and get in better physical shape.
Best part of day was Alison winning the F21 women's race and getting on the USA WOC Team for Scotland! It was wonderful to be able to spend the weekend together.

FLYING PIG A-Meet / USA Long Distance Championships - Carter CAves State Park, Kentucky. - Green
What is there to say. This was one of the most miserable courses I have run/walked in a long time. I think the course setter has a love affair with briars as the first half of the course we spent a significant part in them. The second half was a trail run. The orienteering itself wasn't that hard. Only navigational error was to 1 when I veered off to the left. 6-7 took the lower route as fed up fighting briars, though sounds like higher route was quicker. Lost 1.5 mins looking for my magnifiyer after 6 (never found it!). 7-8 took north route when should have taken the road.
Not one of my more enjoyable orienteering days.

FLYING PIG A -Meet: Carter Caves State Park, Kentucky.
Arrived after midnight at the hotel having met up with Alison at Cincinnati airport. Great to see her - she seems ready for the races ahead this weekend.

12.45pm: We walked around part of the model map to get a feel for the terrain and what the cliffs were like and how the terrain was mapped. Quite some cliffs, 5 m + in many places. Pretty amazing cliff formations in this limestone area. Nice to get out and enjoy a walk and chat together.

FLYING PIG A-Meet / USA SPrint Championships- Morehead State University, Morehead, Kentucky.
4.30pm: A fun sprint race around the campus with a few traps if you were not careful. Almost fell into one going to 1 , but realized quickly and minimal time lost. More hesitations than anything else. 17-18 with construction area, ended up going lower route when should have gone higher one. Only dumb mistake was 20-21 when did not realize the control was the upper level and went to lower level. Funny as when looking at Google maps to get a feel for area this was the one area we decided we needed to be careful and low and behold I wasn't! Really enjoyed the course and got the M55 bronze as a nice bonus. Better still was Alison had an excellent run and got Silver in F21 behind Ali Crocker. A good start to the weekend for her.
