DVOA Event: Hickory Run - West Side of Map: Green 5.25K -155m climb
It was a really pleasant change to be running on this side of Hickory Run for a change. Straight forward to control 1, and fine compass work to control 2, but had some issues and Alison caught up with me. Got very close to the control, but thought area was a dried up water feature below it (dumb considering the record amount of rain we have had in June), and headed NE and thrashed around. Decided to bail out and head back to the large feature which low and behold was where the cliff and control were. Then realized that the map scale was 1:15,000. I haven't run onthat scale of map for a while and as it is so readable, had misjudged the scale and distances - Orienteering stupidity 101. Ran parallel with Alison pretty much from there on. Fine bearing work to 3 and 4. Was a bit to the right on 3 and got a lucky break scanning and seeing the control from about 150m away. Alison got away from me after 4. Good approach to 5, but again after crossing the river in the right spot, just didn't go far enough and thrashed around when Alison appeared. Finally reading the contours took an approach that led to the reentrant. 5-6 straight forward. 6-7 compass bearing got a bit sloppy and again got abit lucky seeing the controls from 150m out. Cut into 9 early, again not getting the scale/distance correct, but interestingly it was no slower angling over to control, than Alison who went to the tral junction and in.
All in all, a very nice course in a nice area, pretty thick in places so not possible to run too much. I just need to check out the mao scale in advance and make adjustments. Had a ggos time and it was fun to run parallel with Alison. The old fart hasn't lost it totally yet compared to Alison!
