Erg 15:00 [3] 3.84 km (3:54 / km)
slept:5.5

5.55am: A crappy nights sleep - woke up at 3.45am and didn't sleep much after that. Brain working through things to do.
Anyway a good erg session. Much more consistent and blasted last 90 secs.
Resistance level 10, 214 calories burned. A good start for the day.

Sunday Jan 26, 2014 #

running 1:04:33 [2] 7.1 mi (9:06 / mi)
slept:7.5 shoes: Brooks Adreneline 2011

10.40am: A perfect day - blue sky cold (around20degF) but the snow on the frozen river looked fabulous. Got out first and took a whole lot of photos along the river and as West River Drive was runnable decided to run out to Strawberry Mansion bridge and back. Also Hugh Mac was making me feel guilty last night at the DVOA Winter mtg. Out 32.30, back 32.03. Listening to Helen Gruimaud plating Bethoven's piano concerto was the perfect music.

Erg 15:00 [3] 3.48 km (4:19 / km)
slept:7.0

8.35am: still really cold outside, so opted to Erg. Steady pace throughout except blasted last minute. 213 calories burnt - equivalent of one Milky Way!
Need to erg more often to help build up some upper body strength for dragon boat racing.

Note

Had a deep tissue massage and wow did I need it, my neck and shoulders in particular. Also my feet got a good working and what a difference - felt like I was walking on air after.

Note

A sad day. I got a call from Mary Frank to say Caroline Ringo had passed away. What an amazing lady. One of the founders of DVOA way back in 1967 and dedicated to the sport and a fabulous keeper of the clubs history.

I first met Caroline and Kent at the 1985 Scottish 6-days in Tayside at Drummond Hill where I was working the parking as a club member of Interlopers. I knew I was coming to Philly 7 weeks later and had tracked down that some DVOA members were at the event. Well I recognized the DVOA symbol on their o-suits and introduced myself and was immediately welcomed to the club. It was the start of a great beginning with DVOA.

The commitment Caroline has given to our success over the years has been immense across all aspects of the club. She has inspired the wide range of club members we have and shown us that all ages can have just as much pleasure in the sport. The annual Caroline and Kent Ringo Service Awards are a great testament to their understanding that DVOA's success is from the great level of commitment of volunteering and organization of events as much as from competing.

Thank-you Caroline for your kindness, being a leader, an inspiration, our tremendous historian, a friend and someone who loved our great sport of orienteering.
Our thoughts are with Kent at this time of sadness. You will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.

Cycling 1:44:27 [3] 25.0 mi (4:11 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Bike: Jamis Coda Comp - hybrid

9.50am: definitely a food hangover from our Dragon Boat get together at Carl and Margaret's last night. Planned to cycle the loop twice, but decided to cycle out along the bike path to Conshohocken instead. 49.43 out, 54.44 back. Seems there is a head wind regardless of which way you go! A decent pace, chilly 33degF. Love my Xmas gift bike gloves.

running 1:21:13 [3] 9.5 mi (8:33 / mi)
slept:7.5 weight:198.6lbs shoes: Ascis GT-2000

9.05am: 35degF and damp, in fact a few flurries as I started. The start of a program to built up to Cherry Blossom 10 miler in DC in April. Decided to run the loop at a slow steady pace just to see where I am at. Out on West River Drive. They was a stretched out large group of runners doing the loop, so that got me in a groove. 41.50 to Falls Bridge. Got a decent pace going and just kept it up, so happy with run and not to knack erred at end.

running 34:49 [3] 4.1 mi (8:30 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:198.2lbs shoes: Ascis GT-2000

7.05am: run along the river. 30degF but a nice day. 9.04, 8.35, 8.24, 8.45. Bumped into George Rhodes and had a good chat along the way. Nice to be running in the light though there is something nice about starting in the dark and finishing with the sun coming up.

running 33:36 [3] 4.1 mi (8:12 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Ascis GT-2000

6.30am: Foggy and 35degF. Amazed by the number of people out running at this time compared to normal. Felt pretty good, maybe feeling good about winning a major project helped. 8.59, 8.21, 8.14, 8.02.

running 47:06 [3] 5.6 mi (8:25 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:199.6lbs shoes: Ascis GT-2000

12.45pm: thought I'd get a run in before the next round of rain came-wrong! Crazy weather this last week, swings in temp. The river still has a fair amount of ice on it, and with the temp being in the 50's, the effect was like a fog/mist machine with the wind blowing it off the river- very eerie. A couple of times it took the visibility down to about 50 feet. At one point it was raining pretty hard, so glad temp in the 50's. went out via the Parkway as a train blocking the crossing. 9.12, 8.20, 6.06, 6.13, 8.29, 8.45.

Trail Running 20:00 [2] 2.0 km (10:00 / km)
slept:7.5 weight:199lbs shoes: Innov8-2(Yellow)

12.10am: Fort Washington State Park - happy new course. Run in the snow, approx 6" depth to start of course.

Orienteering 1:57:48 [2] *** 10.0 km (11:47 / km)
spiked:110/shoes: Innov8-2(Yellow)

12.30pm: Fort Washington State Park. Sandy Fillebrown's specialty course.
110 controls which spelt out 'Happy New Year 2014'. A lot of fun in the snow, clear sunny sky, but in the teen's degF, so definitely chilly, but beautiful A lot of controls, (well streamers), so you had to keep your wits about you, even with some tracks by others. Was definitely worn out by the end as hard work running/ walking in the snow. Ran most of it on my own, though by Tom for a good part and occasionally saw Alison and Hugh IV.

Followed up at Sandy Fillebrown's house. Good to see everyone, Sandy, Clem & Dasha, Karl & Sandy, Tom, Jim. Good nosh and conversation. Proposed DVOA should do a multi- day event for our 50th anniversary in 2017 which folks liked the idea. I don't think many people realize how long orienteering has been going in the USA, so it would be good to celebrate this.
