slept:8.0 weight:193.6lbs (injured)

Well we survived Hurricane Sandy without any bad damage, a few trees down in the neighbourhood and luckily the river didn't flood, but I guess there is still the opportunity for that to happen. Glad I do not live in NYC.

Anle still not ready to run on.

Note
slept:8.0 weight:194lbs (injured)

The hatches are battered down as "Sandy" heads over us. I guess as we are close to the eye of the storm, the winds haven't been so bad. Feels more like a typical wet Scottish January gale! Worried that the large tree in the yard opposite may come down on our house!
Seems like the NJ shore and NYC is being hammered.

Trail Running 15:38 [3] 1.75 mi (8:56 / mi)
slept:7.5 weight:193.4lbs shoes: Brooks Adreneline 2011

10.10am: while Carol ran up from Ridge Avevto Valley Green, I planned to do some trails in the Wissahicken. Felt good until in the trail just the covered bridge on a flat smooth stretch no less, I went over on my right ankle. Major bummer.

walking 35:00 [1] 2.0 mi (17:30 / mi)

Walked back hobbling to Valley Green. Got ice as it was swelling up. Hopefully it doesn't stop me from competing next w/e but it will be a wait and see number. I'm praying. This is a real bummer as finally seemed to have got over the hamstring issue. Moral going forth: always use ASO ankle brace when on trails.

running 20:00 [1] 1.5 mi (13:20 / mi)
slept:8.5 weight:193.4lbs shoes: Innov8 (Yellow)

DVOA Green Lane: course setter for orange and above courses, so just put out a few controls and run the finish as used old fashioned punches as all the electronic punches are being used for NAOC, then collected a few controls. Having promised to be a miserably wet day, we were lucky- it drizzled for a period.

Dragon Boat Racing 50:00 [5]
slept:5.5 weight:191.4lbs

Philadelphia Dragon Boat Festival
All the training came down to the big event - over 120 teams. 1st race we blew the competition away and got into the A division (top 12 boats) - time of 2.23 (slow but a strong head wind - top boat 2.17)
After several hours it was the next race - a much better start 2.18 and came 3rd so made the top final race. Several hours later it was show time, only to be delayed as one boat capsized in the race before. Well we gave it everything a great start and pushed hard the whole 500m. We came 5th overall 2.15, and should be proud of ourselves as the teams ahead of us train multiple days a week and we only one. Everyone felt good about our achievement, even though we wanted to to medal - could almost taste it.

Cycling 35:00 [1] 6.2 mi (5:39 / mi)

running 30:44 [4] 4.0 mi (7:41 / mi)
slept:4.0 shoes: Brooks Adreneline 2011

5.30 am: San Diego - not much sleep as up late finishing off the Tradelines Conference presentation this am on Space Utilization.
Nice and cool at that hour so run alongside the path by the bay - got a decent pace going for the first time in a while. 1.13, 3.55, 1.58, 3.49, 3.47, (0.15) z3.46, 3.44, 3.46, 3.47, 0.43

Stretching 9:00 [0]

Good stretch after run

Note

Tradelines Conference: presentation on workplace strategies and space utilization went really well - got great feedback and potential some new clients.

Did the pilgrimage to Lou Kahn's Salk Institute at La Jolla. An amazing setting and a unique research facility. For a building over 50 years old it is still very progressive with big open research spaces for flexibility where the use of interstitial floors mean all the services systems can be modified as needed outside the research lab itself. The buildings are mainly made of concrete and no one can detail concrete like Lou Kahn. The attention to detail and the quality of the formwork must have been meticulous.
Had fun both taking photos and sketching. Nice to sketch as you really get to understand the building and its details much better when you draw. Between Toronto 10 days ago and this trip filled a sketchbook - must keep this up.

Then there is the quality of the research itself - 5 Nobel laureates for an institution it's size is pretty amazing
Now for the red eye back to Philly
