DVOA Event: Rutgers Ecological Preserve - New Brunswick NJ
Heather wanted me to shadow her on her first brown course. She did well. Between 1 & 2 she drifted right to avoid some fight and kept drifting - needed to use her compass more. A bit more practice and she'll be fine, then if she started running the courses.......
The map isn't bad except in a couple of places. #2 was shown by a distinct veg boundary that did not exist.
Too tired to do a course on my own.

running 35:11 [2] 4.0 mi (8:48 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:189.6lbs shoes: Acis 2150

While only in the 70's, the dew point was 65 and it felt sticky. Started out ok planning to do 5 miles, but just totally ran out of steam and stopped at Lloyd Hall on the way back. Just feeling drained.
Had the Carpenters' Company "Master Builder Award" gala in the evening at the Simeone Museum which is an amazing collection of 80 racing cars.

Dragon Boat Racing 55:00 [3]
slept:6.5 weight:189.6lbs

Dragon Boat practice. A good workout, though definitely tired. The race is only a week away and I think we are pretty well prepared for a good showing.

Tucson O- Club National Orienteering Day: Reid Park, Tucson AZ
Course 1 - Sprint

Down in AZ for the CoreNet Global Summit, so took the opprotunity to do some orienteering. Thanks to Cristina and Melissa for a place to stay - good to see you. Being on east coast time was probably a good thing as out the door by 6.30 and did Course 1 by 8.00am when it was already 84 deg! By 10.00am it was way too hot which is bizarre as the courses closed then and at DVOA the courses only start at 10.00am!
A new urban park map by Mark Everett which was excellent for a sprint event and to attract new members.
Fun sprint around the park. At the last control I realized that I was punching box 8 instead of 9, only then did I realize that I had run past control 5 within 30 m of it!

Orienteering race 15:13 [4] 2.2 km (6:55 / km)

Course 2 - Sprint but set without physical controls, but rather questions to answer based on a visit to the control feature. A fun alternative - only had one small error as thought like others the feature was a bus shelter when in fact it was the adjacent lamp post.
This is a good way to easily make a park like this into a permanent course without any real extra work.

Orienteering (Control pick-up) 15:00 [2] 1.3 mi (11:32 / mi)

Helped with control pick-up.
A fun event and a chance to meet some of the Tucson club members. Again thanks to Cristina and Melissa

Note

Decided to stop by Biosphere 2 on the way back to Phoenix. An interesting place and glad to see it is still functioning as a useful ecological laboratory. Univ of Arizona has taken it over and is doing some interesting work regarding the impact of temp and humidity changes on ecosystems. Worth the stop despite the guide.

DVOA Hickory Run Training Weekend - Green Course 5.1k 195m climb
Rained early, but stopped just before I went out. Made a parallel error to 1, then had a problem coming into 3, went too far north. Clen 4, 5 and pretty good into 6, then total disaster which I will not understand until I can learn how to download the garmin onto route gadget. Started off on a compass bearing, but felt the slope seemed to be wrong, checked bearing and it was way out even though I had been drifting in that direction. It then went from bad to worse going to 7. Not having fun, called it quits. A bummer as typically I enjoy orienteering at Hickory Run.

Orienteering 3:30:00 [2] 3.5 mi (1:00:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

DVOA Hickory Run Training Weekend
Led the advanced training with Clem, Hugh Mac and Corinne. A good day
started with some classroom work, then pace measuring on a trail and in open woods. As I always forget mine, 38 on trail and 45 in woods. We followed this with an exercise combining fine compass bearing work with distance estimation starting in open woods and getting more progressively thicker in places. No maps just bearing angle and distance. As expected no one hit them perfectly. Interestingly Keith Anderson was consistent in going right and realized it was due to him following the line of his thumb and not the line on the compass. I suspect more do this than we relize. A popular exercise with agood suggestion next year to include some visual distance exercise.
Morning finish with a map memory relay including route selection to be noted as well as controls. Used last years Hickory Run Green course, so not exactly a simple course. A nice surprise that the route choices noted were solid.
Afternoon Clem had planned a contour only line exercise to start, then a number of short 1k courses on contour only maps. This allows all levels of fitness to do either a couple or all. Did one course with Heather, one on my own and then picked up some controls.
A successful day of training. A big thanks to Clem, Hugh and Corinne.

running 45:38 [2] 5.5 mi (8:18 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:189lbs shoes: Acis 2150

Woke up at 4.00am and couldn't get back to sleep, but felt more awake that the last couple of mornings with a lot more sleep. The temp has dropped into the 60's at night which is better sleep weather - we don't have a/c.
Anyway an early morning gentle run along the river watching the light come up. A good time of day to be out. Enjoyment factor 3

Stretching 8:30 [0]

Good stretch after run as Carol and Heather headed out for a short run.

Heathers birthday. She and I had a nice trail walk with Ellie on the Wissahicken while Carol ran back from Valley green into town. A beautiful day for a walk through the woods and Ellie loved it.

Cycling 35:26 [4] 9.6 mi (3:41 / mi)
slept:9.0 weight:189.8lbs

Had a good night's sleep. Back felt sore. Generally felt pretty lethargic all day doing odds and ends. Finally late afternoon had to make use of a beautiful sunny day, so cycled the loop. Used Carol's hybrid bike so a lot easier that the knobbly tires on my mountain bike. Pushed hard out west river drive and back Kelly slowing only where crowed with people. Felt good to push. Need to cyclemore often. Enjoyment factor 2.5
Garmin stated 720 calories but this seems high compared to yesterdays run

Trail Running 51:54 [4] 6.08 mi (8:32 / mi)
ahr:156 max:178 slept:7.5 weight:190lbs

Wissahicken: While Carol ran back into Philly. I opted for a trail run. Used the DVOA garmin 3 for the first time. (920 cals)

Did the east side of the river trails from Karl's Indian XXX routine plus to and from Valley Green. Started at Valley Green to Stone Bridge, (1.05mile, 8.47), loop to trail crossing below Indian statue, ( 1.48 miles, 12.38), Up hill past Indian to path crossing up hill above covered bridge, (0.56 mile, 5.38), Karls loop and back to Covered bridge, (1.49 miles, 12.47), covered bridge back to valley green along forbidden drive, (1.51 miles, 11.04). A good run, sunny day, nice in the shade and not too hot 70's. Enjoyment level: 2.5

Karl's distance estimation for the Indian XXX run is more than 4.67 miles. From the stone bridge loops back to the covered bridge is 3.53 by my measurement and down from Sandy's and back up on the final loop is certainly more than 1.12 miles.

Note

Went to Chinatown with Carol. Had a Tibetan back massage followed by a foot massage. Foot massage was good, though not as deep massage as before. It felt good and relaxing.

running 32:53 [2] 4.0 mi (8:13 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:189.2lbs shoes: Acis 2150

Early run along the river. Needed to get out, though humid (74degF, 76% humidity , 66 dew pt).Slow start and got a bit more motivated. 9.19, 8.045, 8.07, (0.37 waterstop), 7.46.

Stretching 9:00 [0]

Good stretch after run

Dragon Boat Racing 1:00:00 [3]

Evening practice. 12 people on the boat. Had to paddle on the left side. Not my good side and was trying a slightly longer paddle. Better to keep with the shorter paddle. A strong practice, but technique not so great.
