Orienteering race 53:26 [5] *** 5.1 km (10:29 / km) +60m 9:54 / km
ahr:138 max:157 spiked:13/14c

Day 2 of US Champs on Remarkable Flats map in Laramie. Brown course.

Much better run than yesterday. Except for 1 minute error going to the GO control, had clean navigation. However, I could not get my heart rate up to my usual 148-150 running level, and more like 143. Probably a result of still being under the weather.

Because of yesterday's disastrous run, I was out of the running for medals. I think I came in 4th in M65, 3rd US, but Rich Parker and Bob Cooley both had good runs, doing the course in 48 minutes.

I think yesterday's error must have been because I used the blue border line at the bottom of the page as my north south line, thus resulting in 90 degree errors. I have no other explanation, because I always take a compass bearing leaving a control. I might have had an adrenaline surge catching up to Chuck, and maybe I was a little careless in checking the N-S line.

On the whole, an enjoyable event. I just wished I had felt better.

Orienteering race 1:08:56 [5] *** 4.27 km (16:09 / km) +75m 14:50 / km

Day 1 US Champs Laramie Brown Course.

Disaster struck as I made a 90 degree error out of control 3 and spent the next 25 minutes wandering around the rocks for about an 18 minute error. Then I ran off the map going to 6, overshot 7, and a poor route choice to 9. Ended up 20 minutes behind Rich Parker who had a great run. Going to o, decided to run around the aspens rather than take the v shaped meadow and push through about 50 meters of aspens. However, looking at Google Earth, it looks like the push through is a lot thinner than the surrounding area, so probably would have been better to go through the green rather than the long way around it. Also got confused going to 6, and saw a track going up through a saddle. The track was not mapped, and I did not think I was all the way down to that saddle, so when I hit the road, ran along it trying to figure out where I was. Finally turned north, and then saw this big open semi depression, which was not on the map. Looked back west, and thought I saw the tongue of open heading up into the reentrant I wanted.

I would like to blame my poor performance on my illness. I feel better, about 80% normal, but do not think that caused my big errors. I definitely did run out of gas about half way through the course, and that I am sure is due to being sick for the previous 5 days.

Oh well, it was still fun, and there will be no pressure tomorrow.

East Pelican Bay practice green course.
Walked the course as I still do not feel very good. Feel better, but still a long ways from normal, with coughing, sore throat and generalized malaise.

Walked the red line and tried to pick out as many of the features as possible. Good training, although I wish I had felt better earlier in the week so I could actually try running at this altitude.

Nice in the morning, but raining hard now. Supposed to rain this afternoon and tonight. Hope it clears by tomorrow morning.

Orienteering 1:31:00 [3] 4.84 km (18:48 / km)

Feel a little better, but still pretty crappy.

I walked the Pelican Bay training course, score O style, and not taking the long routes. Mainly to get a feel for the terrain and mapping. I am pretty sure I did this course a number of years ago. Will have to check when I get back home.

Pointers: Use the aspens, great big features. Small rocks are not mapped. Most rocky knolls are mapped as dot knolls, not as boulder clusters.

Hope I feel better tomorrow. Will try to do east Pelican Bay and/or First with the Most training maps.

Note

Got a bad sore throat Monday night with headache and cough and general malaise. Felt a little better Monday afternoon, but then the 5 hour drive from Sheridan to Laramie really wore me out. Had a horrible night on Tuesday with sore throat, cough, headache, generalized aches, etc. I don't think I had a fever. Gargling and acetominaphin helps minimally. Didn't do much today except my laundry and drove to Cheyene for a movie. Came back via Happy Jack Road. Very pretty. Then met George and Leslie, Dennis, Louise and Rachel, Dan Greene, Steve Greg, Rex, and Charlie DeWeese and went out to a nearby vegetarian restaurant. Quite good. Am feeling a little better this evening, but if not a lot better tomorrow, will probably skip training again. Hope to pick up my packet no matter what.
