Orienteering (Mt Billy H2) 1:08:16 [3] 7.3 km (9:21 / km) +260m 7:56 / km
shoes: x-talon 212

2nd bush run for a long time, first back in the x-talons, but tried to be sensible and still wore the orthotics. Felt very heavy footed and unco in te bush. Hard to tell how much of that is lack of practice and how much is the loss of feel for the ground from having the orthotics in.

Remembered everything except the GPS :(

Distance is straight line and I went a fair bit further I reckon, but generally pretty happy with how it went for the fitness level I'm at now.

2nd control wasn't careful enough keeping track of distance. I guessed right, but wasn't confident, so when I checked the nearby creek junction and didn't see the control I started thinking major error straight away. A little run down the watercourse and then I checked my descriptions and realised the control was at the creek end. Straight back up to where I came from, but a couple of minutes down the drain.

Ran from there through to #12 pretty cleanly and confidently, but felt slow in the terrain and did a bit of wiggling around and sub-optimal route choosing.

#12 I appraoched carefully, but just missed, then saw a nearby control on a similar feature, ran to it, punched, then realised the code was wrong. Figured out which rock I thought the control was on and aimed at for it, but still didn't hit it. Stood around confused, then realised it was hiding in the scrub (the control and the roc) only a couple of metres from where I was standing. (1.5 min?)

Left 13 in the wrong direction and never corrected enough, so missed all possible attackpoints. Took a tumble on the way too which didn't help, but got in the right general area relocating off a large rock surface visible further up the hill. Still couldn't make anything fit right and was wondering where I might be when I had a repeat experience to #12 (without the scrub).

OK from there to the end, though slow through 15.

So most controls I felt like I did things OK, although I was still aware of some bad habits creeping in and being a bit reactive at times. Good opportunity to try to get that under control before I'm fit enough to pick up the pace much.

Note

Somehow a conversation at a church dinner tonight about splinters evolved into being told about a kid who loved orienteering at PEAC who really wanted to get out in the bush and do it properly - and the parents actually sounded keen too. What are the odds? That's one more events calendar to hand out...
9 AM

run (Beept tests) 19:00 [3] 3.0 km (6:20 / km)
shoes: Salamon XT Wings

Easier time of it today. First half only went half way through level 10 and all the fatty boys went in the second half, so just had a couple of athletic girls to force me all the way to mid level 9 in the second half. Fell tired today. Didn't get much sleep last night. can't really think of a reason. Running club this arvo might be a struggle.
3 PM

run (running club) 27:43 [3] 6.0 km (4:37 / km)
shoes: Salamon XT Wings

These kids aren't playing nice. My theory had been that when I actually start to train properly again, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons would be easy recovery runs. But I'm also meant to be the teacher up near the front of the pack and they are starting to run too fast. Let them go at the start, coz I just can't run hard without a warm-up, but gradually picked up the pace after the first couple of kilometres and ended up pushing quite hard up the hill on the way back.
Felt better than a couple of other (slower) runs over the same course. Might be getting a bit fitter. Alternatively it might just have been a bit cooler today.

Handed out a bunch of orienteering flyers to runners today. Not expecting a big uptake, but even one interested junior would be a step in the right direction.

Any bright sparks out there in AP land got any ideas as to the most efficient way to get brochures to all competitors at the upcoming interschool cross country races??

I will probably have to do a mass mail out to relevant teachers, which would ensure that most brochures would end up in the bin before they got to the kids.

How much would it cost to print 5000 race numbers (and how easy would it be to convince ACC to let OAWA provide sponsored race numbers instead of everyone writing their numbers on their hands?) Discount entry on presentation of race number at orienteering event...

Enough drivel. Time to go home.

run warm up/down 15:00 [1] 2.5 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Salamon XT Wings

WU, CD and run thrus with x countrry runners. Only 7 today, but it was the first morning session for the year.

Had been contemplating running the session, but was a teeny bit stiff in left achilles when I woke. Felt fine joogging around though, and given that I never got round to ice or nurofen after the weekend or yesterday's exertions, I'd say the achilleses are well on the way to 100% Yay.

2 PM

run (beep tests) 21:00 [4] 3.5 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Salamon XT Wings

Time and distance approx. 2 x thru the beep test with year 8 kiddies. First group made me run to the start of level 11, second group to 12.4 That hurt way mroe than it used to. Glad I didn't try that on a month ago. Might have been handing over the coke for the firs ttime ever.
3 PM

run (running club) 30:55 [2] 6.15 km (5:02 / km)
shoes: Salamon XT Wings

Started the loop nice and easy. After about 1.5km one bloke wanted to go faster, so I ran with him to 4.7km, then he died and I ran up the hill alone. Felt pretty good for the second half. Still feeling luch and the beep tests early on.
