Note

Today's run saw me tick over 1000km of road running for the year. Particularly depressing given my attempt to be fit for nationals and that there is stuff all other training all year.
Aiming for 2500+ next year still fits with the 10% rule, right?
7 AM

run 2:11:56 [2] 23.06 km (5:43 / km) +166m 5:31 / km
shoes: Saucony Mirage 3

Semi-random wanderings with Wil. Not quite as stupidly long as last time, but still further than I should be running. Nice to catch up.

Pretty humid. Sweated buckets.

Monday Dec 29, 2014 #

8 PM

run 46:04 [3] 10.03 km (4:36 / km) +44m 4:30 / km
shoes: Hoka Rapa Nui

Evening roll along the coast. From Trigg, north for 5km along the bike path, then return to start.
Once again had trouble trying to slow down a bit to take it easier. If I'm doing that on 10km runs and still feeling pretty comfortable, I assume / hope it might be a sign that I'm starting to regain the first signs of fitness.

Sunday Dec 28, 2014 #

8 PM

run 30:23 [3] 6.57 km (4:37 / km) +66m 4:24 / km
shoes: Saucony Mirage 3

Evening run out along Reid Hwy to make the most of decent street lighting.

Felt pretty good tonight. Didn't have heel raises in as I took them out to walk around the shops and didn't get around to replacing them. First time in a while. Achilleses felt comfortable.

Saturday Dec 27, 2014 #

5 PM

run 31:25 [3] 6.79 km (4:38 / km) +30m 4:32 / km
shoes: Saucony Mirage 3

Pretty hungry, it was hot and I just wasn't in the mood. End result was that I just ran a little faster to get it over with as quickly as I could without pushing hard.
Had small segments where I felt like I was in a good rhythm, but it didn't ever last long.

run 31:10 [2] 5.0 km (6:14 / km) +16m 6:08 / km

Soft sand run from Trigg to Brighton and return.

Gorgeous morning - unless your were one of the many surfers sitting out the back waiting for the 10cm waves to roll in.

My plan to run to Jacko's to get my orthotics looked at had been formulated well in advance of last night's shenanigans, but it the interests of further proving my slowness of learning, I ran to his work anyway for my appointment. wasn't 100% sure on the distance and it took a while to get going. Initial attempts at 'lifting the pace' to make sure I arrived on time resulted in a speedy 4:55km. Hmmm. Got going a bit quicker in the 6th km, but was very happy to find the journey much closer to 6km than the anticipated 7.

Jacko is a champ. He should be nominated for podiatrist of the year or something. Thanks heaps for refurbishing my orthotics on the spot rather than waiting till after your well earned holidays.

The tightness in my legs at the start disappeared pretty quickly and I actually felt pretty comfortable running - just leg weary, especially when heading up hill.

run 33:32 [2] 6.17 km (5:26 / km) +57m 5:12 / km
shoes: Saucony Mirage 3

About 35 minutes of sitting around proved to be a good length of time to not want to start running again. Pretty slow shuffle home, getting increasingly hungry as I went.
Maybe just imagining things, but the orthotics felt slightly more stable and definitely a bit softer, with the heel post replaced and the nice soft squishy bit not being completely worn through. Apart from fatigue, legs felt really good for most of this.

In the interests of not leaving any niggles out and then wondering where they came from later, I've been getting a sore spot near the top of my left tibia each time I've run recently, possibly back to my first or second run in this training block. It;s not as high as the tibial tuberosity that has bothered my in the past with patella tendon issues and at the moment it goes away completely when I warm up, but will need to be monitored.

run 1:34:35 [3] 18.79 km (5:02 / km) +147m 4:51 / km
shoes: Hoka Rapa Nui

Today it was time to prove that I am a slow learner.

After my close call with an allergic reaction two days ago, today it seemed the only sensible way to fit in a run was to have a late lunch and then run 19km to a family dinner only 2.5hrs later. Only 7km longer than I've run recently and way too close to a burger and chips (recurring theme in my diet at the moment)

Needless to say, the stomach was feeling pretty full when I started, which is never a good sign and the hand started to get itchy at about the 8km mark. Not ideal. Decided that continuing on for as long as possible until things got markedly worse was probably a safer option than stopping where I was and waiting for help to arrive.

The next 5km weren't a lot of fun, but after that the itchiness subsided slightly, which was good as it had spread to my face by then. Got to my destination in one piece, beating my bag of clothes, which later didn't turn up with P as she had left them behind. Hooray for P's parents heading to the same dinner who rescued me from spending the evening in smelly running gear.

By the time I had a shower, I was slightly welty and quite red from the waist up, but it subsided over the evening and I felt quite normal by the time I drove home.

Little trundle to loosen the legs after the seasonal relocation.

If anyone in Perth wants a run between now and the first few days of January, give me a buzz :)

9 PM

run 30:15 [2] 6.06 km (5:00 / km) +17m 4:55 / km
shoes: Saucony Mirage 3

Managed to forget my plan not to eat dinner until after an evening run, so waited about 2 and a half hours after food before heading out on a super easy trundle down the main road carrying epipen and phone.

Made it home without any major issues, but palms are getting a bit itchy as I type, so will see what happens :(

Early family Christmas yesterday had eating too spread out to easily fit in a run. Had a chance at about 8:30pm, but beer and chocolate seemed like a better plan.

So today I combined yesterday's run and today's run in one loop :) Nice little route down to the beach, briefly along the sand and than back along the river. A few too many rustles in the bushes for my liking, but lovely to run on a trail again, and the track I was on for most of the time was constantly little ups and downs and just fun. Harder work than running on the flat, but got back into an easy rhythm at the end.

Not as warm as the last few runs, but ran in a shirt and it was pretty humid, so got pretty sweaty by the end.

Warm afternoon jog around Woorree. Did a slightly better job than a couple of days ago at regulating the effort.
Why am I not super fit yet :(

Wednesday Dec 17, 2014 #

7 AM

run 30:34 [2] 5.61 km (5:27 / km) +7m 5:25 / km

Morning jog on Tarcoola beach before Surf Rescue Requal course.

ahr:150 max:166 shoes: Hoka Rapa Nui

First run with HR monitor in a long time. Better check what the heart rate zones are set at.
Took a few firebreaks and different wiggles out towards the coast, but took a wrong turn somewhere, so still haven't run on the old railway other than along the coast, where it is now a bike path.

Strong headwind for the second half.

Felt better than I expected.

Monday Dec 15, 2014 #

4 PM

run 44:57 [2] 8.77 km (5:08 / km) +23m 5:04 / km
shoes: Saucony Mirage 3

A couple of days of stretching seems to have sorted out the calves again. More exploring in and out of a few different tracks along and in the riverbed through Woorree.

The motivation for a morning run still eludes me...

Saturday Dec 13, 2014 #

4 PM

run 36:02 [2] 7.16 km (5:02 / km) +10m 5:00 / km

Meh.
Calves tightened up early and stayed sore throughout. First time in a while that's happened.

Spent the morning painting a fence, but can't imagine how that could be related.

Note

Hmmm. Have been a little bit busy and a little bit sick, but health is improving and school's out for summer. And I have a full PE Department sorted out for the first time since early September, so I can stop doing someone else's job on top of my own.

No more excuses :)

4 PM

run 42:35 [3] 9.15 km (4:39 / km) +41m 4:33 / km
shoes: Saucony Mirage 3

A frustrating day, where I had lots to do at work, very specific plans for what I was going to do when, and it all fell apart. I am not very patient when dealing with other people's mistakes, especially when they stop me doing my work :(

A few deep breaths wasn't doing the trick by the end of the day, so rather than risk ripping off somebody's head, I went for a run. Felt somewhat better after that. Something tells me I may need to do the same again tomorrow, and I am certainly going to be left with plenty of work on which to catch up over the holidays.

Sunday Dec 7, 2014 #

4 PM

run 31:50 [3] 6.67 km (4:46 / km) +11m 4:44 / km
shoes: Saucony Mirage 3

The good news is that my legs felt really fresh. Kinda what you'd hope for after not training for ages. Also a bonus was that there didn't seem to be any little niggles during the run, although my quads were sore at the start, probably from being a bit overzealous with stretching the last two evenings.

Unsurprisingly though, despite trying to run at a really leisurely pace, fresh legs meant I just couldn't slow down to a proper slow run pace. It was just that little bit more taxing than it should have been - which I guess won't be an issue unless I actually start training nearly daily.

I did the maths a couple of days ago and figured out my target marathon, which has so far inspired me to do pretty much nothing is in 30 weeks. Given that there's nothing but easy running on the program until 18 weeks out, that seems like plenty, but the thought of being near peak training volume in 12 weeks from my current starting point seems overly optimistic. Will just have to try to start relatively sensibly and see what happens. The big test will come when I have to maintain a routine once back at work, but hopefully the next 5-6 weeks will be enough to get me back in the groove.
