paddle 1:00:00 [2]

First paddle in a very long time in Mum's sea kayak. Don't think I got the rudder pedals set at the right place, which comined with the covered shell meant I couldn't get my legs in the right spot, coldn't sit in the right postion and had all sorts of trouble afte rthe first ten minutes. Leg was going numb, pain fom lower back thorugh hamstring and was sitting leaning too far back and couldn't get any power in the stroke. Should have stayed in bed. Felt like crap.

Still swollen around eyes and bridge of nose from exercise inudced urticaria yesterday.

On the bright side I didn't paddle until after Easter this year for a race at the start of July whereas I have just done my first paddle in preparation for a race next August, so I can't possibly end up worse off, can I???

run 45:26 [3] 9.2 km (4:56 / km)
shoes: Reebok Premier Road Plus

Dunno what to write about this run. No achilles pain and no foot pain at all, which is brilliant...

BUT...

Started to struggle a bit in the last fifteen minutes, which I initially put down to heat, but with 5 minutes to go I started to get itchy hands and knew what was coming. Got home OK, straight into a shower where my face transformed into that of someone who has gone 12 rounds with Danny Green. Welts all over from waist up, swollen lips, eyes VERY itchy. Had a lie down in front of the TV for an hour with my fet in the air and started to fel a bit better.

Crap. Only waited 2 hours after lunch for this run and paid the price. Thought I had nailed the problem foods down to milk and peanuts and even then only in large quantities. My lunch of reheated pizza and coke may force a rethink on that one... and definitely no mid-afternoon exercise for a while...

MTB 2:40:00 [3] 38.1 km (4:12 / km)
shoes: Diamondback Vectra Sport

Dunno what the total time, ride time or distance were, but it was almost identical to last week, so that's what I've entered for the time being. Felt harder than last week. Didn't appreciate the extra heat and humidity. Shop stop in Pickering brook was much needed, as as the bakery afterwards.

Note

Had a lazy day today. Was going to run in the morning but didn't get out of bed... then I was going to run in the evening, but dinner smelled too good...

cycle 1:55:27 [3] 58.34 km (1:59 / km)
shoes: Avanti Blade

Too lazt to get up in the morning, but got motivated and rode in the evening instead. Warm and humid.
Ride up to Quinns was easy. Legs felt weary at first but good once warmed up. Harder coming bck into the wind, though more sheltered in places along the bike path than what I as expecting. Pace dropped near the end as it was getting a bit dicey on dual use paths that I don't know very well as it got darker and darker.

run 39:26 [3] 8.0 km (4:56 / km)
shoes: Reebok Premier Road Plus

Run up east side of lake gwelup and Karrinyup golf course and just a little around the corner, then return. Felt foot for a few minutes around hald hour mark and a tiny bit tender after, but pretty good. Much less general leg soreness.

Monday Dec 24, 2007 #

cycle 3:29:06 [3] 100.68 km (2:05 / km)
shoes: Avanti Blade

Felt slack after turning the alarm off and taking an extra hours sleep to avoid a 40 minute run yesterday, so got up in the dark for a long ride.
Missed my turn thru Perth again, but figured out how to get back on track. Just headed south down the freeway to the turn for WA waterski park in Baldivis then turned around and back (nominally) the same way. Lost my way just north of town and headed down loftus and by lake monger instead of the usual path. Slacked off a bit for the last 15 minutes talking to a bloke on his way to Yanchep.
Adjusted rear brakes so they don't rub any more, but only after I'd finished (coz it was too daunting to tackle the 10 second job beforehand...)

MTB 2:40:00 [3] 38.0 km (4:13 / km)
shoes: Diamondback Vectra Sport

Morning ride from the Dell with Pete, Tooms, Jen, Ricky, Wil and Dalto.
Dunno where we were most of the time, but it was good fun. Need lots more practice technically, but legs felt surprisingly good given increase in bike kms recently. Ride time spread over 4 hours including half hour stop at Pickering Brook store for food.

Friday Dec 21, 2007 #

cycle 2:26:26 [3] 68.95 km (2:07 / km)
shoes: Avanti Blade

same ride as Tuesday without the getting lost bits (or less of them anyway). Bottle cage decided to part company with bike in the first half ofthe ride, which was a bit unfortunate. Almost kiled by a suburban 4WD warrior drifting into the cycle lane as he talked on his mobile near the Freo traffic bridge. Knob.
Wind stronger than Tuesday. Harder work heading south... Tomorrow may be interesting

Thursday Dec 20, 2007 #

run 30:00 [3] 6.45 km (4:39 / km)
shoes: Reebok Premier Road Plus

Run from home round Lake Gwelup. Felt OK but very running UNfit. Hardly noticed foot, achilles also ood. Maybe coz other bits hurt so mch that I don't notice them at the moment. Will have to wait and see.

Tuesday Dec 18, 2007 #

cycle 2:32:00 [3] 70.67 km (2:09 / km)
shoes: Avanti Blade

Ride south on freeway bike path to Mt Hentry bridge, then around the river to Freo, back up the coast to Scraborough then home
Felt pretty good. Accidentally went right thru the middle of town over the horseshoe bridge and down William St when I followed the wrong branch of the bike path and got pretty lost a few times including deadending in East Freo yacht club, so a bit of farting around which dropped the pace a bit, bt really enjoyablr anyway.

cycle 3:33:02 [3] 100.15 km (2:08 / km)
shoes: Avanti Blade

Seemed like a good idea at the time (earlier in the week) to squeeze in a last long ride before leaving town. After not sleeping well for a couple of weeks it may not have been such a good idea, and after cocktails and not much sleep last night probably even less so.

Took it pretty easy out to Northampton and felt strong for first 40km. At turnaround was feeling really positive, but of course the feelings that it eas a stupid idea returned when it dawned on me (well duh) that I was now facing 50km home into a headwind and I had only ridden 50km once in the last couple of months.

Died badly on the way back, unsurprisingly.

Now faced with the ultimate reason why it was a stupid idea to do the ride - a 4.5 hour drive to Perth after lunch - in a car I've never driven for more than half an hour at a time. I am a moron.

96 min out
117 min back

run 32:00 [3] 6.5 km (4:55 / km)
shoes: adidas supernova trail

Felt crap at the start and didn't get much better. Pklayed touch footy afterwards. Fun, but opposition only had 4 players...

Note
(sick)

No training today. Was going to run befor school, but spent half and hour looking for the keys I'd alrready put in my bag the night before. Had to be home early, and by then the earache was too bad to try.

Doctors in the arvo to get some new eardrops as antibiotics clearly aren't working...

then went to emergency at 4am (weds morning) to get two different types of painkillers and a restricted antibiotic. Had some cortisone pills to reduce swelling - seemed to help. Now to go do some elite sport and get drug tested...

cycle (commute) 20:00 [3] 8.0 km (2:30 / km)
shoes: Avanti Blade

Loosening up cruise into work. Weird weather today. Warm, NE wind. Rain coming.

cycle 50:14 [3] 26.6 km (1:53 / km)
shoes: Avanti Blade

Ride after work (2:30pm). Was shorter than planned as I had a deadline to be home, and been stuck at work for an hour longer than expected. Out near 440 roadhouse something new - my handlebars came loose. Luckily had mltitool in bag, so it was a quick fix.

Will have to get our again tomorrow some time

Ear is feeling really blocked. Not as sore as yesterday (kept me awake a lot last night) but pretty crap. Scraped some dry puss out of it this arvo... Hope this round of antibiotics starts to do a bit more of a job - I don't really want to spend my last day in town trying to get in to see a doctor.

MTB (greenough river loop) 50:00 [3] 17.0 km (2:56 / km)
shoes: Diamondback Vectra Sport

felt ok. struggled a little into the wind. Lost it on one sandy bit when stuck in the wrong gear, and had to walk it until I found a firmer patch to get started again.

cycle 47:00 [3] 18.0 km (2:37 / km)
shoes: Diamondback Vectra Sport

Struggle into the wind to the start of the walk tail (27 minutes) and cruise home with it behind (20 min). So tough getting there I almost turned around without doing the MTB bit. Glad I didn't, but totally knackered at the moment.

My vague idea of a massive wek of cycling before hedaing to Perth is looking shaky already.

Ran out of antibiotics yesterady and woke up with a sore ear again this morning, so back to emergency to get another script (stronger pills this time). See how we go for the next 5 days.

Saturday Dec 8, 2007 #

run 29:58 [3] 6.6 km (4:32 / km)
shoes: adistar control

Went for a half hour jog/run. Felt like I was striding out quite strongly for the first 15 minutes, then I turned around and had to run into the wind. Felt quite crap quite quickly, but amazingly made it back under the half hour (just).

Could still feel right foot at times, but at least I'm at the point where I can be confident of handling a 30 minute run every second week... (or the occasional metro series etc). May have to step it up just a little and see if I fall apart so I can be bothered going and getting a correct diagnosis.

...and now I've figured out how long (short) the run was it turns out I wasn't running strongly for any of the run...

Friday Dec 7, 2007 #

cycle 42:00 [3] 16.0 km (2:38 / km)
shoes: Avanti Blade

15 minute cruise with a tailwind with a workmate, then 27 minute slog home into a strong headwind. Yuk.

Thursday Dec 6, 2007 #

cycle (commute) 42:00 [3] 16.0 km (2:38 / km)
shoes: Avanti Blade

Slow ride into work and slower home riding with a couple of workmates. Good to actually be mobile again and able to lift HR without ear throbbing

Had a good stretch in the evening too. CAn now reach past my knees again

Tuesday Dec 4, 2007 #

Note
(sick)

Not much change on the ear front. A little bit better, but this was offset by my stomach not coping with a combinaion of antibiotics and ibuprofen. Spent half the day on the can.... so still no training

Monday Dec 3, 2007 #

Note
(sick)

Wanted to run, but ear still throbbing as soon as the heart rate got above about 60... Might need another day or two

and it looks like the money I spent on a multi-entry card for the local poor is going down the toilet. 6 swims in a week and a half with an infected ear... not likely.

Sunday Dec 2, 2007 #

Note
(sick)

Was keen to get out again today, but the ear that's been bugging me for a couple of weeks got real bad last night.
Originally was full of wax and didn't appreciate starting to swim. Was starting to get sore so I got it syringed out in Pert last tuesday. Thought that may have done the trick, but gradually got sore again until last night I decided I wasn't going to sleep coz it hurt too much and I didn't want to wait till Monday to see a doctor. Emergency room here I come.

cycle 1:39:30 [3] 51.25 km (1:56 / km)
shoes: Avanti Blade

Standard ride out Mullewa rd (Gee that makes it sound like I do it all the time). Firs tthing that's felt a bit like a training session for ages. Felt much easier than I remember it. Maybe my consistent regimen of not training is starting to pay dividends.

Actually figured seeing as I've pretty much given up on school for the year it would be good to at least try to get two good weeks of training under the belt before returning to Perth and dying when I join in with other people...
