So I might have 5km pace dialled in, but the first ‘tempo’ effort in a long time - not so much. Aiming for 40 minutes running @4:15’s. Think the km splits ranged from 4:00 to 4:26. Not so consistent...
Felt uncomfortable for most of it, but not unsustainable- I think the 8th km was just a mental blip. It was raining enough that the new shoes were slipping a bit, but given how easily I picked the pace up again, I don’t think I can use it as an excuse.

Had a few issues with the split button (hit stop instead of split after 3km).
Felt ok. Glad that the efforts were getting shorter as I went.
Added a couple of laps to the final recovery for a cool down.

Mission accomplished for the morning.
First time under 20 minutes for 5km in quite a while. I had been hoping to pace myself off a couple of the faster guys in the club, but nobody who beat me in the first RRR race was running, so tried to just get in a rhythm that would be sustainable and stick with it.
Seemed to work.
Pretty flat course, slight climb in the 2nd km, but the time lost there was probably compensated for by getting me going in the 4th km, which I held till the end (just).
Might almost be time to start trying some ‘proper’ training, rather than just random running sessions, but the next 4 weeks may just come down to survival (I’ve picked up an extra class with virtually no warning).

This didn’t feel as easy as I would have hoped given the lack of pace.

Another easy jog to test the legs. Back to normal now, but annoyingly knees still a bit sore.
Shame to have ‘wasted’ a week of school holidays from a running perspective, but probably better than trying to push through and breaking myself.

I followed up Saturday’s run with a family hike and exploring the local caves. Safe to say I can’t bounce back from overdoing things like I did 30 years ago.
Legs seized up completely and have been sore all week.

Had a short jog to try to loosen things up. Bits of my quads were still quite sore, but hopefully this was more helpful than harmful.

More games on MTB trails. Probably shouldn’t have tried the disused old downhill track all the way up to the top of Mt Archer. Hard work, especially in non-trail shoes. Ran in normal shoes with orthotics today - kinder on the feet, bit feel far more unco.
