Note

A discouraging observation this morning is that my hip issue seemed worse than previous days. I played a bit more than an hour of pickleball yesterday, so that may have been the culprit. I also ran a very slow 1.75 miles on Saturday, but Sunday morning it wasn't too bad. Possibly the issues this morning were due to the combination of running plus the pickleball over the weekend, or possibly it means that short slow running isn't too bad, but pickleball, with its more uncontrolled movements, may be worse.
9 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 29:18 [1] 1.35 mi (21:38 / mi) +1ft 21:38 / mi
shoes: Saucony Excursion TR8 2015

Shorter than intended dog walk. Homer was really dragging. Cheryl noticed he was limping yesterday evening, so it may be related to that. It wasn't particularly hot when we set out this morning, and he wasn't panting noticeably, plus he's gone on walks in much warmer weather with no big issues, so I can't blame the weather. More likely just old age! (He's pushing 14.)
2 PM

Walking 30:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Excursion TR8 2015

At Seabreeze, with Cheryl, our son Greg, and his son Fred. We were there for about 4.5 hours, but logged time and distance is a very rough estimate of the walking we did.

We don't go there very often, but Seabreeze is really an outstanding amusement park, which we're quite lucky to have so close to us (10 minute drive). It was a perfect day -- around 80-82, warm enough for Greg and Fred to enjoy the water park stuff, but not uncomfortably hot for those of us who stayed dry. Despite it being perfect weather and one of the last days before school went back in session, it was not that crowded. When we first got through the gate, for example, we saw that there was essentially zero line for the Jack Rabbit, so how could we resist going on that right away.
7 PM

Pickleball 45:00 [3]

Three games of pickleball at the Rec Center, partly because I wanted to play and partly to do a double check of any cause-effect between playing pickleball and hip muscle/tendon/whatever issues. Got killed the first game 11-1, but managed to win the next two games.

Pickleball 1:10:00 [3]

Rec Center, indoors, only 4 of us present: Cheryl, Bill H., Geoff, and me. Played 3 games with all partner combinations; I won lost the first 12-10 with Cheryl as a partner, then one the next two. We then played on final game, with Cheryl and me again vs Bill and Geoff, and we won 11-3, which was nice.

Running 17:11 [2] 1.78 mi (9:39 / mi) +5ft 9:37 / mi
shoes: Hoka Conquest

My chiro asked me to do something this weekend to test out the recovery status of my pulled muscle, so I decided to do a short, slow run. I was either unaware of any muscle issue while running, or at times mildly aware that it felt a bit different than the left leg, but no pain or discomfort. The key will be how it feels later today and tomorrow.

Lawn mowing 24:14 [1] 0.8 mi (30:20 / mi)
shoes: Hoka Conquest

After getting back from my short slow run, and observing how obviously in need of mowing the front lawn was, I decided to mow it right then and there. I normally haven't been logging lawn mowing as a "workout", but since I had my GPS on, I decided to log it to remind myself of the distance covered, which isn't highly impressive.

Hip flexor muscle feeling a bit better today. I'm not sure if it's due to the two chiro visits I've had, or taking it easy this week, or random variability.

Walking (Dog walk) 40:00 [1] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Excursion TR8 2015

Dog walk on the HJ trail, from Drumm Rd to Lake Rd and back. Dogs got to stop for a dip in their swimming hole near Drumm Rd on the way back.

7 PM

Pickleball (Drills) 45:00 [1]

Hip muscle is still ailing. Went to a chiro who recommended nothing at all strenuous for this week at least. So I just did drills tonight, no running. Mainly with trailsnail and Paul.
9 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 30:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Excursion TR8 2015

Dog walk out to the Rt 104 path and down about a quarter mile, then back.

Pickleball 50:00 [2]

Indoors, at the Rec Center. Played 3 games doubles and one game singles. I think I may have won them all. I know I won the singles game, convincingly, 11-3. I rarely play singles (most pickleball players don't), but this was a lot of fun, I should do it more.

Walking (Dog walk) 40:30 [1] 2.02 mi (20:03 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Contend 2 April 2015

Morning walk, around the big block. Two dog encounters on the Rt. 104 path -- usually don't encounter anyone, with or w/o dogs. First was a lady with two golden retrievers, which looked quite friendly. Unfortunately, my Hanna tends to react aggressively towards dogs she encounters, no matter how nice they appear to be. So some snarling from Hanna, dogs kept apart, no damage done, but I sure wish Hanna was more cordial to dogs she meets. Second encounter was a guy with a dog, couldn't tell the breed, medium large. Again, it appeared to be quite friendly, and Homer got to sniff noses with it, which went fine, until Hanna got into the act, then some more snarling, dogs getting pulled apart, etc. Very embarrassing.

Pickleball 45:00 [2]

Played 4 games at Webster Park, after a PT session (for my wrist, not my hip issue). First 2 games were very lame, as they involved a lady who is fairly slow and one of the weakest players in general who play there. I think in 2 games, the teams I were on outscored the other teams 22-1. Then I played two somewhat more competitive and much more enjoyable games.

I'll see, later today or tomorrow, how my hip reacts to playing.
11 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 31:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:40 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Excursion TR8 2015

Dog walk on the HJ trail, from Drumm Rd, to Vosburg Hollow trails, with a stop in the creek (which has relatively little water now), then back to the HJ trail, past Vosburg a bit, then back. No GPS. Time is accurate, distance is based on 20 min/mile, a typical pace when dog walking.

Walking (Dog walk) 49:03 [1] 2.51 mi (19:32 / mi) +13ft 19:26 / mi
shoes: Hoka Mafate Speed

First outing in a number of days that seemed worth logging. I've done a number of slightly more than 1-mile walks but didn't have a GPS along and they seemed short enough to not bother with.

The issue I've been having with a possible muscle pull in my upper right leg is persisting but may be getting a bit better. Although it kind of comes and goes, so it's tough to say. I made an appt with a chiro who was highly recommended by two pickleball acquaintances; that will be next Monday. Plus, I see my phys therapist tomorrow for my wrist, and I plan on briefly describing my leg symptoms and ask if it's something that she thinks she could help me with.

New shoes today! I went to DSW on Sunday with Cheryl, as she wanted to buy new court shoes, and I also could have used newer court shoes. She found a nice pair that she liked, but I didn't. However, in the clearance rack, I spied a pair of Hokas for $70 which is about half of what they usually go for. The size was 10.5; I usually take 11, but I tried them on. They seemed just a tiny bit short but actually fit quite well overall (width, etc.), so I decided to buy them, even though I totally don't need another pair at the moment. Too good of a bargain to pass up, though. I think trailsnail's philosophy on shoes may be rubbing off a bit on me ...

Walking (Dog walk) 27:42 [1] 1.38 mi (20:08 / mi) +1ft 20:07 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Contend 2 April 2015

Late afternoon dog walk. First walk for me of over a mile in several days. Hip issue (pulled muscle, I still think) has still not disappeared, in fact it's probably no better than a week ago, which is certainly discouraging. It's quite possible that playing pickleball on Thursday wasn't a good idea, as it felt distinctly worse on Friday than it had on Thursday.

Pickleball 1:20:00 [2]

Outdoor pickleball, at Webster Park. I played actual games (as opposed to drills), but didn't tax myself too much. My hip didn't bother me while playing; I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see if there are any negative after effects.

7 PM

Pickleball 1:00:00 [1]

Pickleball, just drills again, so I wouldn't be tempted to do any running and possibly set back any improvements in my pulled hip muscle.

Monday Aug 10, 2015 #

Walking (Dog walk) 40 [1] 1.7 mi (24 / mi)

Approx sum of two dog walks today, one late morning and one late afternoon.
7 PM

Pickleball 1:05:00 [1]

Nursing a sore hip (presumably a pulled muscle), so no games for me tonight, but lots of good drills with trailsnail, and then with trailsnail and Mike S., and then with those two plus Paul. I was very careful to not run at all, in order to not aggravate my injury.

Lawn mowing 45:00 [2] 1.2 mi (37:30 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Excursion TR8 2015

Front and back yards. No GPS carried, so distance is an estimate based on a fuzzy recollection of the few times that I did use a GPS for lawn mowing.
3 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 23:54 [1] 0.82 mi (29:19 / mi) +156ft 24:49 / mi
shoes: Saucony Excursion TR8 2015

My right hip has been a bit sore, possibly as a result of the Sprint at RIT (maybe running too hard w/o enough warmup? although I DID warm up some), and possibly aggravated by lots of hill climbing at Mendon on Friday. It's a new ailment for me so I'm trying to be cautious about it, thus I didn't run yesterday and decided not to run today. Dog walks on level ground didn't seem to bother it TOO much though.

Cheryl suggested that we take the dogs to Lincoln Park, parking at the end of Smith Rd and walking down to the waterfront, to check out the very major construction happening down there. About 1 minute into the downhill walk, it was pretty obvious that I should not have agreed to this walk -- downhill did not agree with my hip issue at all. Once we got down to the bottom, she wanted to walk further, but I declined, on account of my unhappy hip. Walking uphill to the car was marginally better than walking downhill but still wasn't great.

It feels like some sort of pulled muscle, so hopefully things will be fine in a few days, at least if I avoid doing activities that aggravate it (like the hilly walk today!).
9 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 26:00 [1] 1.35 mi (19:15 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Excursion TR8 2015

Late-evening dog walk, to the Rt 104 path, down just a bit, and back.

Whatever my hip issue is, it seems happier with level ground than with either uphill or downhill terrain. It's interesting in that going up and down stairs doesn't seem to bother it nearly as much as going up and down slopes.

Orienteering race 1:13:50 [3] 3.32 mi (22:14 / mi) +441ft 19:45 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

World Deaf Orienteering, M45 course at Mendon, after all of the official competitors had started.

Lost probably 5 minutes on #7 I think it was (I don't have my map in front of me right now). Otherwise, no huge lost time incidents, just overall very slow, partly due to fitness coupled with lots of hills, partly due to annoying undergrowth that made it risky to run even where it was flat, in many places.

Based on my GPS track, AP guessed that my outing was "Walking", which is no surprise based on my pace.

Orienteering race 17:58 [4] 1.5 mi (11:59 / mi)
shoes: Hoka Conquest

Sprint course at the World Deaf Orienteering Championships, at RIT, after all the competitors had started. I felt I did quite well until the 11th control, when I had a parallel error where I thought for a few seconds that I was on a different trail than I was, and made a correction back to the trail that I wanted to be on (which was the trail that I was actually on at the time). Might have cost me 30 seconds. But then I totally botched #13, the final control, in plain site of the finish line. I thought I was further south than I actually was. Lots of confusion, with Jim Russell (who was manning the finish line) watching me the whole time, which made things worse. I bet I lost more than a minute on that control, which should have been maybe 20 seconds from the previous control. So between #11 and #13, I probably lost 2 minutes.

Forgot to start my GPS at the start! Distance is estimated.
1 PM

Walking 20:00 [1] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Hoka Conquest

I was assigned to observe 4 controls in the afternoon sprint relay. The controls were a bit of a walk from the start/finish, plus I couldn't see even 2 of them from any one spot, so once in the area, I wandered from control to control checking on them making sure they hadn't been moved or taken. Distance and time are very rough estimates.

Running intervals 43:19 [4] 5.01 mi (8:39 / mi) +90ft 8:31 / mi
shoes: Hoka Conquest

"Interval" workout (sort of) on the HJ trail. I did a mile fairly easy, then I did 0.25 miles at about an 8:00/mile pace, then slowed down for 0.15 to 0.20 miles, then repeated, for around 6-8 reps. Then I attempted to run my last mile moderately hard -- was hoping for 8:00 but didn't come that close, presumably because I was getting a bit worn out by that point, and the trail is slightly uphill going in the NW to SE direction. I felt like it was a good workout, though.

Walking warm up/down 4:58 [1] 0.29 mi (17:07 / mi) +6ft 16:48 / mi
shoes: Hoka Conquest

Cool-down walk at the end.

Walking (Dog walk) 1:07:09 [1] 3.05 mi (22:01 / mi) +14ft 21:56 / mi
shoes: Saucony Excursion TR8 2015

Walk with the dogs, at Four Mile Creek park/nature preserve, at the corner of Lake Rd and Phillips Rd. I had gone there once before and was a bit underwhelmed by the trails available, but now there are at least twice as much trail length as then. They have some signs designating the "Blue" trail (first one encountered) and the "Red" trail which links to the Blue trail, and at some intersections, maps posted with "You are here" on them. However, the maps are a bit lacking in that there are other trails, not Blue nor Red, which exist but aren't on the maps. For example, there is one prominent intersection which is shown on the map as having 3 trails coming together. However, in reality, there are 4 trails leading away from that junction, all of which looked pretty major. I suppose I should offer to do a better map for the Friends of Webster Trails ... something much lower than orienteering quality but much better than what they have now.
