Walking (Dog walk) 1:05:40 [1] 3.71 mi (17:41 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Longish walk with the dogs on a cool cloudy day with very light rain falling. Looks like the weather will be worse later and tomorrow, so I figured I'd give them a few miles as a workout while the weather was semi-tolerable.

Pickleball (Lefthanded) 1:15:00 [2]

I think I played in 4 games, and lost all of them, but all were sufficiently enjoyable that it was worthwhile playing. First game I think we lost 13-11 or so (Alan and I vs Whitey and Len). Other games weren't as close but there were no blowouts. Felt I played reasonably well, for left handed. I'm guessing I'm playing at about a 3.0 level left handed, vs maybe a 3.5 to 4.0 level right handed (on a scale of 1-5, with 1.0 being a total beginner and 5.0 being the best players in Rochester).

1 PM

Pickleball (Lefthanded) 1:00:00 [1]

Drop-in play at the Rec Center. Generally wound up in rather unexciting / low-skill level games, but at least I felt like I was playing OK and maybe improving a bit on some aspects of my left-handed play.
4 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 50:16 [1] 2.72 mi (18:28 / mi) +13ft 18:23 / mi

Running 9:09 [3] 1.04 mi (8:47 / mi) +20ft 8:37 / mi
shoes: Hoka Conquest

A lap around the Rec Center path before pickleball.

Pickleball (Lefthanded) 45:00 [2]

One good game, then two very one-sided games, got discouraged and bagged it after those two. First game was Whitey and I vs Mike S and Linda H, and we won 12-10. Next game, different people except Mike S was still an opponent, we lost 11-2. Sat out a while, then played in a foursome with Brendon (? I think that's his name, Sue's husband) and I vs Whitey and Brian, knew it would be one-sided, kind of surprised they didn't offer to split up. We lost 11-0. Winning a total of 2 points in 2 games was a sign to me to go home and walk the dogs!

PT 30:00 [3]

My bi-weekly torture, I mean PT, session. Range of motion in my wrist is increasing but very slowly and not without significant discomfort.
2 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 1:03:27 [1] 2.97 mi (21:24 / mi) +50ft 21:04 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Took advantage of a gorgeous day by going for a walk with Cheryl and the dogs on the rail-trail that goes right past Lollypop Farm.

Walking (Dog walk) 1:00:05 [1] 3.32 mi (18:06 / mi) +17ft 18:01 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Once again, some decent morning weather for a dog walk.
1 PM

Running 9:17 [3] 1.03 mi (9:00 / mi) +22ft 8:49 / mi
shoes: Hoka Conquest

First attempt at running since my broken arm accident. I surprised myself by running a mile continuously w/o feeling totally spent at the end.
2 PM

Pickleball 1:00:00 [2]

Drop in play at the Rec Center. Played a number of games with or against my neighbor Alan who just took up the game this past Monday. He's picking it up quite well (helped, I'm sure, by a lot of tennis and racquetball in his background).

Wednesday Oct 22, 2014 #

9 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 1:02:26 [1] 3.37 mi (18:31 / mi) +6ft 18:29 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

As with yesterday, taking advantage of a rain-free period to get the dogs out for a reasonably long walk.

10 AM

PT 30:00 [3]

Bi-weekly PT session for trying to recover some range of motion with my wrist/hand. (With the physical therapist; I also do 2 sessions a day of the various stretching and strengthening exercises she has assigned me to do, but I don't bother logging those.)
12 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 46:47 [1] 2.42 mi (19:20 / mi) +14ft 19:13 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Rain stopped, weather suitable for a dog walk ...
3 PM

Mapping 24:46 [1] 0.8 mi (31:04 / mi) +42ft 29:35 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

More Highland Park mapping. The forecast and radar had looked promising, and tomorrow looks like it could be a washout, so I decided to try to finish up the field checking for the map updates at Highland. Unfortunately, rain came not much more than 15-20 minutes into my outing today, and it looked persistent, so I had to abort my mapping way before I was able to finish.
9 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 30:00 [1] 1.3 mi (23:05 / mi)
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Dog walk, on a cool (mid 40's), dark, rainy, somewhat windy evening. To make things worse, I made the bad decision to take the dogs through the woods at the dead-end part of the street, and over to the next neighborhood, rather than my usual route of going to Bay Rd and then the Rt 104 path for a bit, then turn around. Hanna seemed insistent on bushwhacking through the woods on the way back, to find the absolute perfect spot to do her business. So it reminded me a bit of a rogaine -- nighttime, wet, going well off trail. At least the woods were reasonably open; no green to fight through.

Pickleball (Lefthanded) 1:15:00 [2]

Rec center, drop in play, intended to be just Cheryl and me so I could get in some focused lefthanded practice. But we ran into our neighbor, Allan, who had a pickleball paddle in hand but had never played. He was there to meet up with a pickleball player from Xerox that he used to play racketball with, to be taught the game. So Cheryl, Allan, and I played; even after his racketball friend showed up. The racketball friend is someone I've played with, it turned out, and he's very good, so he wound up playing in a competitive game with Doug, Mike S., and Mark Y.
7 PM

Biking (stationary) 20:00 [3]

Fairly vigorous indoor bike workout.

Sunday Oct 19, 2014 #

Walking (Dog walk) 54:00 [1] 2.7 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Dog walks, plural; 3 walks, total around 2.7 miles. Noon, 2 pm, and 9 pm.

11 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 58:45 [1] 3.37 mi (17:26 / mi) +16ft 17:21 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Around the big block, then into Finn Park, around the field, with a stop at the stream (Hanna waded in and had a few drinks; Homer declined to get his feet wet).

Drizzling on and off but not terrible weather.
2 PM

Pickleball (Lefthanded) 1:15:00 [2]

Rec Center. Had quite a few decent games, although in nearly all cases I was playing with people of my left-handed level or below, so nothing overly challengin.

Friday Oct 17, 2014 #

9 AM

PT 30:00 [3]

2nd PT session for recuperating from broken arm. Working on range of motion. Unfortunately, I get the impression that it's a long shot that this will help with the very annoying nerve issues I continue to have (hypersensitivity to touch, something like a pins and needles feeling).
12 PM

Mapping 1:24:59 [1] 2.27 mi (37:29 / mi) +171ft 35:00 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Highland Park. Began working on updating the map to change the vegetation mapping to more generally accepted local and national standards, mainly in terms of how to map areas of fairly widely spaced trees with grass between them. Current map shows such an area as white woods if the canopy is continuous.

10 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 1:03:03 [1] 3.3 mi (19:06 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Out the Rt 104 path until almost Gravel Rd, then return. Nice morning. Low 60's, not much wind, very occasional sun.
2 PM

Pickleball (Lefthanded) 55:00 [3]

Th drop-in play at the Rec Center. Played OK for left handed, lost one close game, won one close game, and then won a game easily (11-3). One key is avoiding games where the best players play, as I'm certainly not up for that level.
8 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 36:00 [1] 1.8 mi (20:00 / mi)

Wednesday Oct 15, 2014 #

10 AM

Pickleball 25:00 [1]

Somewhat aborted pickleball session. Cheryl and I headed to the Rec Center with the intention of just practicing, but there were 3 courts and 10 people plus us, so we didn't have a court to ourselves. Thus we were thrown into a foursome, with Debbie S. and Debbie H., not what I had wanted. Played one game, us against them, they won 11-0. Switched teams, Debbie H. and I as partners, played most of the game with us being ahead, then Cheryl twinged her bad knee and said she had to quit, so that was it. Not any real "practice" which is what I had wanted to do, unfortunately.

9 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 56:11 [1] 3.37 mi (16:40 / mi) +16ft 16:35 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Longer/faster walk than usual because I had Hanna only -- the other three dogs were left home, to their disappointment ...
11 AM

Lawn mowing 1:00:00 [3]

To Cheryl's delight, I'm sure, I can now mow the lawn. I just need to use my left hand to pull the started which is a bit awkward but works OK. Today was not just mowing, but picking up clippings plus leaves, which meant emptying the bag a lot of time, and carrying the contents to the street.
4 PM

PT 30:00 [1]

First PT session for getting more range of motion back in my right hand.

Monday Oct 13, 2014 #

7 PM

Pickleball 1:00:00 [3]

Subbed in the 7 pm ladder league. I was put into a pretty weak foursome (Kay, Richard, and a fairly new player, Maureen), but that was good, because I played pretty badly and I would have totally ruined any chance for good fun games had I been in a more competitive group (like the court next to me which had Carole, Sue, Debbie S., and Kathy).

Sunday Oct 12, 2014 #

9 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 40:00 [1] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Nightly dog walk, with Hanna and Hershey (Cheryl took Homer and Elma on a shorter walk). Out the Rt 104 path to the spot I know is the 1 mile mark, and back.

Saturday Oct 11, 2014 #

10 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 1:00:01 [1] 2.5 mi (24:01 / mi) +18ft 23:51 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Walk with Homer, Hanna, and Hershey, with help from Linda Burgey. Cheryl, our grandson Freddie, and Elma, the pipsqueak dog we're watching, were with us for the first half mile.
3 PM

Pickleball (Lefthanded) 1:05:00 [2]

Rec center. Played 4 games, didn't do too badly, I think I was on the winning side on 2 of them.
9 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 35:00 [1] 1.75 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Friday Oct 10, 2014 #

Walking (Dog walk) 1:35:00 [1] 4.7 mi (20:13 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Actually, dog walks, plural. 1.2 miles this morning, two 1-mile walks around dinner time (two shifts of two dogs each), and a 1.5 mile walk around 9 pm.

Thursday Oct 9, 2014 #

10 AM

Walking 50:00 [1] 2.0 mi (25:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Observing the Webster school 5th grade orienteering day at Webster Park, with Klem North PE teacher Matt Carpenter (not the Matt Carpenter who is the many-time winner of the Pike's Peak Marathon ...). I volunteered to update the map they use, which is 8 years old and very badly out of date. An example of the out-of-dateness is that there are two shelters shown on the map which totally do not exist any more. Also volunteered to help design some new courses, so it was good to see the kids in action and to get a sense for the needs/desires of the PE staff for courses. Although these are of course very easy courses, they aren't quite like White courses we would design for our meets. Almost more like a short and very easy Sprint.
2 PM

Biking (stationary) 12:00 [2]

A little time on the stationary bike at the Rec Center. I chose the random hills workout but didn't see how to set the overall level of effort, so I think it defaulted to a very low baseline level, with slight increases in effort on the "hills". So it wasn't much of a workout. I worked on maintaining a high rpm, like around 100 most of the time.
3 PM

Pickleball (Lefthanded) 45:00 [1]

Played some left-handed pickleball. Thanks to trailsnail for encouraging me. I did better than I had anticipated; played 3 games and was on the winning side of all of them. First game, though, hardly counted, as the other three (all natural righties) also played left-handed. The next two games, though, the others played right-handed, and they're all fairly experienced players. First of these two games: Debbie S. and I vs trailsnail and Scott. Second game: trailsnail and I vs Debbie S. and Scott. Not to brag, but trailsnail and I pretty much demolished the opposition in that game. :)
4 PM

Strength 12:00 [3]

Short fitness room workout; leg presses, leg extensions, and leg curls.
9 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 42:00 [1] 2.0 mi (21:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Evening dog walk with Homer and Hanna, while Cheryl took Hershey and Elma, the dogs we're sitting for for a few days, on a shorter walk.

11 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 56:30 [1] 3.01 mi (18:47 / mi) +1ft 18:47 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Semi long walk with both dogs, out the Rt 104 path and back. It was raining the first 20 minutes and I wasn't really dressed for rain, but the sky in the west looked fairly bright so I figured the rain would be somewhat short-lived, thus I persisted.
8 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 35:00 [1] 1.67 mi (21:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Evening walk with the dogs; out to Rt 104 and Bay Rd, down the bike path for a ways, then return.

Tuesday Oct 7, 2014 #

Walking (Dog walks) 1:20:00 [1] 4.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Although my right hand is far from fully functional, I'm finally recovered enough to take both dogs for a walk at the same time. So I'm trying to partially make up for the last 4 weeks when Cheryl has had almost all of the dog walking duty. Three walks today, two of them a little over a mile each, the other one (late evening one) a little less than 2 miles. No GPS carried.

Friday Oct 3, 2014 #

10 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 38:00 [3] 2.24 mi (17:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Around the big block with Hanna, before heading to the meet at GVP.

Thursday Oct 2, 2014 #

3 PM

Strength 15:00 [3]

Short fitness room workout. The upside of my arm injury is that I'm much more regular about my leg workouts on the weight machines, and I'm setting or tying a few PR's on various machines.

Wednesday Oct 1, 2014 #

11 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 38:00 [3] 1.7 mi (22:21 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Walk with Cheryl and the dogs, with my arm in a sling as directed. Over to Finn Park and around the perimeter of the lodge/parking lot are. No GPS; time and distance estimated.
