Pickleball 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

New Year's Eve get-together at the Webster Rec center with 20 or so pickleball players, plus a few non-players. We had the place all to ourselves; nice, although quite non-standard, thing to do on NYEve.

Also played maybe 30 minutes of ping pong.

Pickleball 1:10:00 [3]

Monday night pickleball. Had some nice games, first with trailsnail, Debbie S., and Mike S. Then some really competitive games with Paul and I against Mike S. and Ron C.

Walking (Dog walk) 43:28 [1] 2.29 mi (18:58 / mi) +7ft 18:55 / mi

To Finn Park and back. Seemed too warm, upper 30's. Was slightly overdressed even though I knew what the temp was.

Pickleball 15:00 [1]
shoes: Brooks Ghost 5

Arrived at the Rec Center expecting to play pickleball, only to discover that I had forgotten to bring my ankle-friendly shoes. Played in one low-key game, with a beginner as my partner, and got beat 11-0 by trailsnail and Debbie S. My ankle was already grumbling so I knew it would not be a good idea to play any further.

I'm thinking this is the only pickleball outing that I've ever had where I failed to score even a single point. I've lost games 11-0 before (although not very often), but they've always been among other games that I've played where I've won or at least scored some points.

Pickleball 1:40:00 [3]
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

At the rec center. Had a few not-so-fun games at first, then the quality of play in the next few foursomes was more enjoyable.

My ankle bothers me, despite wearing the shoes that I thought were going to help keep the problem at bay. Possible reason is that I played more than 1.5 hours this time, while I only played a bit more than an hour last time. Might be a lesson there someplace ...

Walking (Dog walk) 57:39 [1] 3.03 mi (19:00 / mi) +14ft 18:55 / mi

To Finn Park, around the field, and back. Stopped at the creek which was running pretty high; Homer decided against going for a swim though!

Wore arch supports in the hiking boots. No hint of grumbling from my ankle so maybe that does help.

Pickleball 1:05:00 [2]
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Open play at the Rec Center. Have been having an ankle problem lately. Found a probable diagnosis for it: posterior tibial tendon dysfunction -- http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=a00166 I've found that, for some reason, wearing Montrail Mountain Masochist trail shoes for everyday wear, walking the dog, etc., is much better for the ankle than other shoes I have, so I tried them for pickleball. As odd as it seems to be using trail running shoes for playing pickleball in a gym. But it may have helped, after a bit more than an hour of play, my ankle wasn't grumbling at all.

Walking (Dog walk) 37:20 [1] 2.04 mi (18:15 / mi) +1ft 18:15 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

It wasn't raining at all yet and the radar suggested that it might not rain for an hour or so, so I took to opportunity to give Homer a walk around the big block. And sure enough, the rain held off! Very cool and damp though (just above freezing). It wasn't bad but I'd certainly prefer mid 20's and less damp.

Walking (Dog walk) 52:23 [1] 2.89 mi (18:09 / mi) +56ft 17:49 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Walk with Homer, to Maple, up to Klem, and return the same route. Upper 30's, a bit sunny, but also a bit breezy, which made the walk back home (heading south) just a tad less pleasant than the walk going north.
2 PM

Pickleball 1:30:00 [2]

Webster Rec Center. Got to play a few games with trailsnail for a change!!!

12 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 49:51 [1] 2.52 mi (19:48 / mi) +6ft 19:45 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Urban walk with Homer, in the general vicinity of School w/o Walls, as Rick L. and I are thinking about asking permission to start the map adventure there.
3 PM

XC skiing 36:20 [3] 2.46 mi (14:46 / mi) +17ft 14:40 / mi

XC skiing at the Whiting Rd trails (only the non-hilly ones), with Trailsnail.

Some stoppage time, when Trailsnail was listening to bird sounds, was subtracted.

Walking (Dog walk) 27:20 [1] 1.43 mi (19:09 / mi) +3ft 19:06 / mi

Walking (Dog walk) 36:40 [1] 2.03 mi (18:06 / mi) +3ft 18:04 / mi

14 degrees, a bit of a wind out of the east, 3-4 inches of fresh snow -- so fine!!
2 PM

Pickleball 2:15:00 [2]

Pickleball at the Rec Center. Longest I've played in a while, and my ankle is definitely feeling it. It was not bothering me in the least prior to pickleball (including my walk with Homer this morning), and became progressively more tender while playing. So a pretty clear cause and effect.

Downhill skiing 30:00 [2]

First day skiing! At Bristol, with Cheryl, in part to help her celebrate her birthday. Conditions were great on the easy loop -- even some fresh, natural snow. Rocket wasn't bad either, but of course it had gotten a lot more skier traffic than the loop had. Weather not bad -- didn't even seem all that windy. We didn't ski all that long, didn't want to push it too much for our first time out, especially with Cheryl coming off of a leg injury.
2 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 38:43 [1] 1.98 mi (19:36 / mi) +1ft 19:35 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

Walk with Homer on a moderately cold, moderately windy (but still tolerable) day. Bushwhacked over the Maple, then walked back via the Rt 104 path.

Walking (Dog walk) 31:57 [1] 1.73 mi (18:30 / mi) +64ft 17:53 / mi

Walk with Homer in the city, from the rental house we own, where I needed to stop down to get a handyman start on some re-wiring.
2 PM

Pickleball 1:10:00 [3]

Rec Center. Felt pretty bad (kind of like in a bit of a daze, such as from lack of sleep the 2 nights prior to last night, or maybe from coming off of some chest/nasal congestion, or who knows what). Didn't play great but not terrible either. But also I had had quite enough after a little more than an hour.

Walking (Dog walk) 49:52 [2] 2.04 mi (24:28 / mi) +48ft 23:56 / mi

Whiting Road trails, with Cheryl and Homer. Among other ones, we took the new trail that goes up to Lake Rd. I was hoping for some decent orienteering terrain in that section, although really I wasn't very optimistic. As I expected, it was pretty thick for the most part. There were a couple of sections of open or at least light green woods, and some contour features, so it's probably worth expanding the map to include this area. But in general, it doesn't enhance the map that much in terms of orienteering possibilities.
