Note

Since my grandson Frederick is only 3.5 yrs old, it's far premature to predict that he'll wind up liking orienteering, much less be proficient at it, but I can't help but be a little encouraged so far.

He seems to be connected with the course colors/names, for one thing. When I ran into him and his father, Greg, at Powder Mills, Greg told Fred to tell me what course they were doing, and he said very proudly "Yellow!!!". He then asked me what course I was doing, and I said Green.

Then a few days later, he and Greg were looking at a map, and he asked some decent questions about it, including "What does blue mean?" and then "What does green mean?", and finally "What's a black X?"

Then last night at dinner, he got to talking about orienteering again, and Greg asked him if he remembered what course we did at Powder Mills, and Fred said "Yellow! And grandad did Green!". Greg asked if he remembered how many controls were on his course, and without hesitation, he said "10!".

Like I said, I'm not predicting he'll like it a year from now much less 5-10 years from now, but I'm certainly encouraged ...

Pickleball 20:00 [1]

Very short pickleball outing, this morning at the Webster Park courts. I had to duck out to meet a contractor down at our Marion St house. Cheryl stayed around long after I left, and road home with trailsnail. Good sized group that showed up -- I heard we had 13 people, so 3 courts worth of games.

Walking (Dog walk) 38:02 [1] 2.16 mi (17:37 / mi) +85ft 16:59 / mi
shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Late afternoon walk with Homer, to Finn Park and back.

I'm back to using my semi-functioning old GPS, now that I've sent the new one back to Garmin. Today, the old one was reasonably useful, as the screen it was stuck on showed the elapsed time, the overall pace, and the current pace. From the overall pace and the elapsed time, obviously I could estimate how far I'd gone. Way more useful than the time of day and elevation that I was stuck on the other day.

Pickleball 1:30:00 [1]

Totally right handed. I'll see how the elbow likes that amount of activity. I played pretty poorly considering I was right handed; not a whole lot better than my better left-handed outings. The overall level of play was a bit shaky though, so it may have been partially a matter of playing down to the level of play of others. 8 people total, including trailsnail playing a pretty decent left-handed game, while her right shoulder recuperates.

Walking (Dog walk) 40:00 [1] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Mid-day walk with Homer, around the big block (over to Maple, then to Rt 104, to Bay Rd, and back to Woodland).

Walk/run 44:00 [3] 4.0 mi (11:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Walk/run with Homer on the Hojack Trail. Distance and time are estimated, because my BRAND NEW Forerunner 205 is on the fritz already!

About 3/4 into the run, I noticed that the screens were changing spontaneously, very quickly, like 3 changes per second. Nothing I did succeeded in stopping or even slowing down the changes. It wouldn't even respond to the power button. I finally, when I was done with the run, tried the button combination "lap" and "power" which I had learned was a way of shutting down an out-of-control GPS. It did work, but then refused to start back up no matter what buttons I pressed.

It's frustrating that these symptoms are almost identical to my old GPS, but I blamed that on old age of the GPS, and this new one doesn't have that as an excuse.

In both cases, the problem first appeared on a very humid day, but it doesn't seem like that should cause a problem because my understanding is that the Garmin GPS's are reasonably water resistant. You wouldn't want to wear one swimming, but I thought they would be fine if worn in the rain, and if so, it doesn't seem like a day with high humidity should phase them.

Looks like a phone call to Garmin is in order ...

Orienteering (Green) 1:07:57 [4] 4.36 mi (15:35 / mi) +728ft 13:28 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Powder Mills Park Green course. Finished around the middle of the pack.

A few relatively minor bobbles or sub-optimum route choices, plus a couple of places of other lost time (making a stop for water, which probably cost me 1.5-2 minutes, and running into my son and grandson who were doing Yellow, which delayed me for 1-2 minutes).

Mostly, what prevented a better time was lack of endurance from not doing much running lately.

Pickleball 1:15:00 [1]

Pickleball at Webster Park. I played mostly right-handed -- probably 50 minutes right handed, 25 minutes left handed. My elbow felt fine while playing, but of course, the key is whether it feels OK later today and tomorrow.

Walk/run (Dog walk) 44:01 [3] 4.05 mi (10:52 / mi) +40ft 10:46 / mi
shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Run on (mostly) Hojack Trail, with Homer. I backed off to 1 min running/1 min walking but increased the duration to 44 minutes which was almost exactly 4 miles.

New GPS arrived today and was successfully initiated on this run/walk.

Once again, the calculated climb was way high, at 190 feet. I put in an estimate of 40 feet.

Walk/run (Dog walk) 32:00 [3] 3.12 mi (10:15 / mi) +176ft 9:44 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Walk/run on the Hojack trail. This time I actually did more running than walking -- 1:15 of running followed by 0:45 of walking.

Ailing GPS update: Today, I was able to use the "up" scroll button so I could navigate to the screen I wanted, which shows distance, lap pace, and elapsed time. Much more useful than time of day and elevation, like I was stuck with last time.

I ordered a new one last week, and it should be here around mid week. When my old one worked a bit better today, I started thinking that maybe it really wasn't necessary to order a new one. But when I hooked it up to my computer just now, the computer wouldn't recognize it, even after multiple attempts. So I do think a new one is in order, due to the flakiness of my current one.

Update: The latest problem, of failure to communicate with my computer, seems to be caused by a cable that failed, rather than the GPS itself. I was able to download with no problem when I used a new cable.

Setting out controls for the Seneca meet. I took way more time and covered way more distance than I really needed to, due to some botches in the planning process. (Had to make two trips back to the start area, from either moderately far north or pretty much totally far north, to deliver things to Vince that I should have and could have given him when I first met up with him at 8:30.)

Speaking of Vince, many thanks to him for setting out the controls in and around the pond area.

I was down in the city picking up control supplies from Lavines' house, and Homer needed his morning walk, so I took him along for his first-ever urban run. It went fairly well, from my standpoint and his. I'm gradually increasing the fraction of the time I spend running rather than walking, to where I think it's slightly more than 50% running time. And no knee issues, yet anyway.

Pickleball 2:00:00 [1]

Webster Park courts. 10 people in attendance, so we had all three of the pickleball-lined courts occupied at one point.

Once again, I tried playing one game right handed, since my elbow didn't feel much worse for wear this morning. Might have helped that I took an Aleve before bed though. I'll see how it is after playing two games in less than 18 hours, after not having played right-handed at all for a long time. One thing for sure, it's way more fun playing right-handed than left-handed.

Pickleball 1:25:00 [1]

Evening pickleball, at Webster Park. I played one game right handed (with my light paddle), the rest left handed. This is a test to see if my elbow is making any progress. It felt perfectly fine while playing and feels fine now, but the main question is whether it feels OK tomorrow or not.

Walk/run (Dog walk) 36:00 [3] 3.23 mi (11:09 / mi) +40ft 11:01 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Another Hojack Trail run, with Homer, with three stops for him to take a dip in the creek to cool off.

This time, I tried running for a minute and walking for a minute.

My GPS is definitely on the fritz. Now, neither of the two buttons that scroll up or down work at all. The only screen I was able to view was one giving the time of day, the elevation, and the time of the last lap. No distance, no elapsed time, etc. It reminded me of when I got back into running in the late 70's, before wrist stopwatches were commonly available. I had a digital watch (at least I was that much advanced), and I remember when going for my noontime runs from Kodak, it made the computation for how long I had been running simpler if I started my run, say, exactly at noon on my watch. (Or 11:55:00, or 12:05:00, and not something like 12:03:41)

Another analogy is that it was kind of like having one of those rogaine-legal GPS devices, where you can download your route later but not see any potentially useful information during the event like how far you've traveled.

My GPS (Forerunner 205) is 5+ years old and it's been pretty much trouble-free up until now, so I really can't complain. I ordered a new one (still a 205, so I don't have to re-learn how to use it) from Amazon this morning.

Walk/run (Dog walk) 31:34 [3] 2.69 mi (11:44 / mi) +30ft 11:37 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Walk/run on the Hojack Trail, with Homer. GPS said 142 feet of climb which is obviously hogwash on the flat-ish Hojack, so I overrode it and put in 30 feet which I think is reasonable.

45 seconds walking, 1:15 running, repeated.

Knee felt OK. About halfway through, my average pace was a little over 12 min/mile, so I set a goal to get below 12/mile for the workout, and I did that with room to spare.

Pickleball 1:00:00 [2]

Indoor pickleball at the Webster Rec center. 7 people -- Cheryl, Mae, Jayne, Rich, Kathie, Susan, and me.

I gave myself an intensity of 2 instead of 1 because I played two mini-games of singles, which is certainly a more respectable workout than doubles.

Pickleball (Left handed) 1:15:00 [1]

At Webster Park, with just 3 of us: Cheryl, Robin, and me. We played some 2 vs 1, then played some singles. I was playing pretty badly overall. Hope I can resume right-handed playing at some point, where I'm at least marginally competent.
11 AM

Lawn mowing 45:00 [1]

Front yard. It really needed it, as it had grown very erratically (long in some spots, nearly non-existent in others). At least it now looks better, from a distance anyway.
4 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 20:44 [1] 1.06 mi (19:34 / mi) +6ft 19:27 / mi

Walk with Homer, to the next street and around the block. More to check out my GPS to see if it's functioning (it seems to be, although one button barely works, the "down" button of the "up/down" pair of buttons -- of any buttons to stop working, one of the "up/down" pair would be the best choice vs any of the others). It was quite balky at picking up satellites, but that happens on occasion, plus the last time it viewed satellites it was in SW PA, and I'm sure they "look different" from up here.

Rafting 4:00:00 [5]

Rafting on the Upper Yough! Class IV and V rapids, with a few class III for a bit of a break.

http://wilderness-voyageurs.com/upperyough.html

Andrea's b/f Brian has been trying to talk me into doing this for a few years now, but I've been quite apprehensive. He finally persuaded me, how I'm not so sure. My son Greg was also along on this trip. I was in Brian's raft (which is about the only way I would allow myself to be talked into it, as I have the utmost confidence in him as a river guide and whitewater expert), Greg was in another raft. It was every bit as exciting and overwhelming as I had suspected, but it WAS fun and I survived, w/o going overboard at all.

Greg didn't fair quite as well; he went overboard on a Class V rapid. I saw the whole thing as Brian's raft was the first one down and positioned off to the side, below the rapid, as a safety/rescue raft. Fortunately, Greg managed to grab a rock not too far from where he fell in. Brian lept into action, getting our raft very secured, then throwing a rescue rope to Greg, which he caught, and was eventually reeled in, through some vigorous currents, to our raft.

He was OK, just a scrape on one elbow, and he didn't seem too panicked by the whole thing, as I would have been. For one thing, he's only 28, less than half my age, and for another thing, he's a certified lifeguard and therefore not as prone to panicking in such a situation as I almost for sure would have been. When we got him safely into our raft, I told him "I hate to say this, but better you than me!"

The intensity of 5 that I gave this outing isn't so much for physical exertion, although we did paddle very hard at times, but more for a continued state of exhilaration/apprehension mixed with some fear.

All in all, though, a very exciting and enjoyable afternoon!

We got off the river a little after 5 pm, had a bit to eat, got changed, and hit the road home (Cheryl, Greg, and me), getting back home at 12:45 am.

Rafting 4:00:00 [2]

Lower Yough, in a raft with Cheryl and our two kids, Andrea and Greg. Tagged along with a trip led by Andrea's b/f Brian, so we wouldn't have to do our own shuttle from the take-out. Lots of fun, and no unintentional swims!! Greg and Andrea were co-skippers of the raft, and cooperated reasonably well, while Cheryl and I were the front people and followed their instructions best we could.

Walking 1:28:02 [1] 2.1 mi (41:55 / mi) +531ft 33:49 / mi

In Ohiopyle. With Cheryl. A walk around the Ferncliffe Peninsula, which is on the inside bank of the famous "Ohiopyle Loop", probably the only or one of the very few places in the world where one can do a short walk to the put-in, do some substantial white-water kayaking or rafting, and then do a short walk from the take-out back to the starting location. (Map of the Lower Yough, showing the "loop": http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/ucmprd2/groups/public/... )

GPS started going batty near the end of the walk, then later totally died, in which state it lingered for a few days, only to come back to life (apparently) yesterday.
2 PM

Walking 30:00 [1] 1.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Another walk down to Cucumber Rapid, this time to take pictures of our son and his large contingent doing the lower Yough in two rafts. The contingent consisted of his two band-mates, one of their girlfriends, a roommate of his and his girlfriend, another friend of his from Rochester who now lives in Buffalo, and three young ladies from NYC who know the guy from Buffalo.

Some good pictures, and overall a pretty successful rafting trip, considering it was unguided. Our son, the most experienced of the group, was essentially the trip leader. No one swam (unintentionally) from his raft, and there was only one unintentional swimming incident on the other rafter, where they ran into a bit of trouble at Railroad Rapid and three people of the 5 on the raft went overboard for a brief bit.

Walking 30:00 [3] 1.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

In Ohiopyle, PA for a long weekend, with our son, and eventually his bandmates, and our daughter, who lives in Ohiopyle, and her b/f who also lives there and is one of the top rive guides for Wilderness Voyagers. (My daughter also works for Wilderness Voyagers, but in the store/office.)

Our son did the Friday night loop run in a duckie (inflatable kayak), and Cheryl and I walked down to Cucumber rapids to get some pictures.

Orienteering (Trail Challenge) 32:31 [4] 3.01 mi (10:48 / mi) +307ft 9:51 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Cobb's Hill Trail Challenge. I did the 5K course, unofficially, since I had made the map and vetted many of the control locations. I wanted to experience the "mass start" aspect of the race, and hopefully some of the following / pack forming.

I wound up finishing in 2nd place, behind Zach by quite a ways, with one person fairly close behind me who told me he had been following me for the last 5-6 controls. I didn't expect to finish nearly that high -- a number of much better runners than me had some major navigation issues, apparently, one of which I witnessed, going from 2 to 3.

I was pleased that I was able to maintain a reasonably fast pace (relative to my lack of conditioning) for just about the whole distance. My knees didn't bother me during the race, and still feel OK. Hopefully they will be OK tomorrow as well.
