Pickleball 50:00 [3]

Friday pickleball at Penfield rec center. Lots of people -- 9 people, 1 court, which meant a lot of sitting, but the games were very challenging and close. We played the games to 9 instead of 11 so there'd be a quicker turnaround, meaning the people sitting out weren't on the sidelines as long.

Very good and relatively even level of competition. I'd say no one there was weaker than I am, but with the exception of two players, no was was substantially better than I am either. I managed to be on the winning side in 3 out of the 4 games that I played, which I was quite shocked at, going into this session. It helped that only one out of the 4 (the one I lost, not surprisingly) had one of the two "better" players on the other team.

Walking 37:15 [1] 2.43 mi (15:20 / mi)
shoes: Gel Kahana Mar 2012

Walking home from dropping my car off at the shop for some (presumably) brake work tomorrow.

Somewhat chilly, blustery day, which I was dressed OK for except that I could have used a warmer hat than the baseball hat that I had on.

Pickleball 2:00:00 [2]

Tuesday morning pickleball group. Enjoyable, for the most part. I played two games left-handed (mainly to balance out the two sides, partly to rest my right elbow) and won both of those, so it seems good that I didn't play those games right handed. But balanced that out by losing a game right handed.

Walking (Dog walk) 21:00 [1] 1.1 mi (19:06 / mi)
shoes: Gel Kahana Mar 2012

Afternoon walk with Homer; low 30's, very strong wind from the west, not real pleasant even though it was sunny. Over to the next street, and around the block in that neighborhood.

Tried out some brand new shoes. They felt fine walking. Maybe someday I'll get to try them out running! I've always done pretty well with Asics Gel Kahanas. I think these are Gel Kahana 8 or something like that.

Pickleball 1:15:00 [2]

Monday night pickleball group. Better than this group usually is. Only two of the clueless people showed up (and they're still pretty much clueless, even after 6-7 weeks of playing), plus there was one new-to-me lady. She was not much younger than I am; we got there at about the same time, there was an empty court, and I suggested we warm up on it. We introduce ourselves; she warned me that it's only her 2nd time playing. We start hitting around, and I quickly conclude that she's way better than she should be for being her 2nd time. When I get a chance, I ask her if she's a tennis player. She said no, but she used to play squash, but that was 20 years ago. But I guess once having played a racket sport is way better than never having played one.

There was another guy around my ability, plus an Indian-looking lady who has been there before and is probably my ability or a bit better (and who did real well in a tournament this past Saturday), plus three ladies who were roughly a notch below me and the Indian lady and the other guy, decent players who know the game. So we had lots of enjoyable games and no truly tortuous ones.

PT 10:00 [3]

- 1-leg raises up and down from 4.5-inch high platform, 2x20 each leg

Pickleball 50:00 [2]

Pickleball at the Rec center; only had the gym for a bit more than an hour. Five people: Paul, trailsnail, Cheryl, Jayne, and me. One person sitting out each game. Lots of fun, close games.

Mapping 1:14:18 [2] 1.8 mi (41:17 / mi) +248ft 36:31 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

Durand mapping. Road over with Cheryl and Homer, but we parted ways when I pointed out to them that my mapping pace was going to be way slower then their preferred walking pace. Cool day with a wind off of the lake making it even cooler at Durand, but once in the woods, it was fine. My R knee complained a bit on some of the steep uphills, and I experienced a sharp pain at one point when walking on level, paved ground -- almost like the knee was hyperextended even though it really wasn't.

Reasonably productive hour or so of mapping.
7 PM

PT 20:00 [3]

- Straight-leg raises with 5 lbs on each foot (2x10 each leg)
- Leg extensions, with knee supported about 10 inches off the floor, with 5 lbs on each leg (2x20 each leg)
- 1-leg raises up and down from 3-inch high platform, 2x20 each leg

Mapping 30:00 [2] 1.43 mi (20:59 / mi) +300ft 17:30 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Guide 3

Planned on using an hour and a half of free time (in between two grandson baby sitting stints) to get started on some actual mapping of Durand, but that plan was foiled by a light but persistent rain. So I spent more time walking some more trails.

9 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 58:46 [1] 3.38 mi (17:23 / mi) +15ft 17:19 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Guide 3

Morning walk with Homer, to Finn Park, through the field, with a stop at the creek for Homer to swim, then through the next field to Gravel Rd. Back via the Rt 104 path.
11 AM

Biking (Road) 41:43 [3] 10.13 mi (4:07 / mi) +52ft 4:06 / mi
shoes: Bike shoes

Bike ride on a very pleasant day (around 70 F, sunny, little wind). To minimize stress on my knees, I tried to be in gears where I wasn't pushing that hard. I had the bike odometer set to read out in cadence, and my goal was to try to be in the 90-100 rpm range, and for the most part, I succeeded. No issues with knee discomfort.
2 PM

Mapping 36:33 [2] 1.67 mi (21:53 / mi) +313ft 18:35 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Guide 3

Short walk at Durand with Homer, the main objective of which was to utilize a small time window I had this afternoon to walk some trails and get GPS tracks to get started on the re-map of Durand.

My knees didn't really bother me on the hills, but my out-of-shapeness definitely did.

Walking (Dog walk) 19:21 [1] 1.1 mi (17:34 / mi) +6ft 17:29 / mi

Mid afternoon walk with Homer (short, just to the adjoining neighborhood), on another very unseasonably warm day.

Pickleball 1:30:00 [2]

Tues morning pickleball group. Overall, enjoyable. I played one game left-handed (and lost in a close game, 11-9). Others were right handed. Iced my elbow immediately after playing, to see if that helps. Knees didn't bother me.

Monday Mar 19, 2012 #

8 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 55:27 [1] 3.25 mi (17:02 / mi) +14ft 16:58 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

Mid-morning walk with Homer. Another great day. Another walk somewhat overdressed. It was 52 degrees on our home thermometer which seemed too cool for wearing shorts and short sleeves on a walk, so I started out with blue jeans, t shirt, and very light jacket (the one from Pike's Peak). After a mile, the jacket came off, and soon after that, I wished I could have changed my long pants into shorts.
2 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 39:00 [1] 2.48 mi (15:44 / mi) +8ft 15:41 / mi

Too nice of a day to not be outside, and I didn't want to (yet) bike 2 days in a row given that I had a few knee issues on my bike ride yesterday, so I went on another walk with Homer.

The plan was to walk him over to Finn Park to the stream, where he could have a swim and get cooled down. This was foiled; while walking on the trail towards the open field, I saw, about 100 meters away, a lady with a (leashed, fortunately!) dog.

She saw us, as did the dog, and the dog was very interested in investigating (and who knows, maybe fighting and killing) Homer. I concluded that the dog looked like it could be a pit bull. It got a bit unnerving when the lady was attempting to hold back the dog, but wasn't able to. She held onto the leash, but she was being pulled in the direction of us, despite her best efforts not to be.

She was looking frantic. She started yelling out to me (in some sort of accent, not sure what nationality) that the dog was (indeed) a pit bull, and she didn't know what it would do to my dog. That was non-reassuring to say the least. I stayed still with Homer, now we were about 50 yards apart. She was on a side trail, and I was thinking that once she got the situation under better control, that Homer and I could pass since we were on the main trail, and wouldn't be going directly past their location. She must have read my mind, because she yelled out "Don't bring you dog any further!"

I was annoyed that we couldn't therefore make it to the field and stream, and kind of upset at her for bringing a dog that is that unpredictable (apparently) into a public park. But then I softened my anger a bit, thinking that maybe she had very good intentions of "rescuing" a pit bull, and who knows, maybe it was her first day with the dog, and she really didn't know what to expect from it. She clearly was very concerned about a possible dog to dog encounter and was doing what she could to keep it from happening.
5 PM

PT 20:00 [2]

- Straight-leg raises with 5 lbs on each foot (3x10 each leg)
- Leg extensions, with knee supported about 10 inches off the floor, with 5 lbs on each leg (3x15 each leg)
- 1-leg raises up and down from 3-inch high platform, 3x10 each leg

Knees feel somewhat better today. Not sure, as usual, whether it had anything to do with my last PT session (essentially identical to today's), or the short bike ride yesterday, or taking one Aleve last night before bed, or random variability.

Sunday Mar 18, 2012 #

PT 20:00 [2]

I did the exercises that I judge to be the less likely ones to cause harm, and avoided ones that I'm getting a bit suspicious about (ones that may be hurting rather than helping).

Straight-leg raises with 5 lbs on each foot (3x10 each leg)
Leg extensions, with knee supported about 10 inches off the floor, with 5 lbs on each leg (3x10 each leg)
1-leg raises up and down from 3-inch high platform, 3x10 each leg

Note

After my last PT session on Thursday, my knees (R knee in particular) were certainly not better, and somewhat worse -- whether that was due to the PT or not isn't certain. My R knee was quite painful whenever descending steps and even when going from a standing position to a seated position (fine when standing and when sitting, the problem is with the transition).

For pickleball on Sat., I wore an elastic knee brace (more of something that applied pressure than a real brace), and after pickleball, my knee was actually quite a bit better than before. Whether it had something to do with playing pickleball, or wearing the brace, or just random variability, is hard to tell, but I'm going to be using the brace for the near future when doing almost anything to see if that does help.
6 PM

Biking (Road) 31:51 [3] 6.95 mi (4:35 / mi) +8ft 4:35 / mi
shoes: Bike shoes

Twilight ride, pretty lame/tame, mostly on the Rt 104 path, which I don't really like biking on. But it was getting a bit dark and I didn't want to be on the roads that much.

Issues with both knees persist, even on a short bike ride like this. Left knee felt a sharp twang of pain just as I was starting out, before leaving my driveway, and my right knee had sharp pains twice during the ride, when I was doing non-standard things with my weighting to absorb bumps on the path.

Pickleball 1:30:00 [2]

Sat. morning informal pickleball group. Six people present: Mike, Debbie, Sandy, Jayne, Carl, and me. I played like crap the first few games, then I switched to my slightly heavier paddle and seemed to play a little better but not at all stellar. I used to be better than Mike, then he got better and he and I were about equal, then he got better still and I've declined in my level of play for some reason, so he's clearly playing at a higher level than I am at the moment.
12 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 50:09 [1] 2.94 mi (17:03 / mi) +11ft 16:59 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

Walk with Homer, over to Finn Park (but not into the field), then back via the Rt 104 path, with a short side excursion up the deadend of Bayside and back.

Lovely day, low 50's when I started, upper 50's when I finished, sunny, little wind. Unfortunately, I was a bit overdressed (slightly overdressed for low 50's, substantially overdressed for upper 50's).

Friday Mar 16, 2012 #

Walking (Dog walk) 40:00 [1] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Progrid Guide 3

Leisurely walk to Finn Park and back with Homer and with grandson Fred (in a stroller most of the way).

The main destination was supposed to be the small playground at Finn Park, but when we got there, Freddie didn't have any interest in doing anything on the (very limited) equipment. So we spent a while at the tether-ball post, watching the ball go round and around one direction, then back the other way. Then I got him to walk down the trail (into the "forest") a ways to the first bridge, where he amused himself for a while by throwing small twigs into the stream. So all in all, a pleasant time, even though no playground activities happened.

Thursday Mar 15, 2012 #

PT 35:00 [2]

PT at home.

For my own information, and of no interest to anyone else, I'm going to try to list the exercises I did, to see if I can come up with a correlation between specific exercises and knee pain. (On Monday, I did more weight machine work at the Rec center, trying to keep the weights light but going a little higher than I had before, and since then, my R knee has been very painful when going down steps.)

Today:
Quad and hamstring stretches (3x30 seconds on each muscle and each leg)
Toe raises (3x10)
Straight-leg raises with 5 lbs on each foot (3x10 each leg)
Leg extensions, with knee supported about 10 inches off the floor, with 5 lbs on each leg (3x10 each leg)
Partial squats (3x10)
1-leg raises up and down from 3-inch high platform, 3x10 each leg

The only thing that caused any discomfort were the partial squats.
4 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 41:26 [1] 2.48 mi (16:42 / mi) +5ft 16:41 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Guide 3

Late afternoon walk with Homer on another very nice day.

Around the big block, with a little extra thrown in on Brookwood.

GPS was taking its time acquiring satellites (about 0.36 miles into the walk, by my estimation). I added in the extra distance manually.

9 AM

Biking warm up/down (Stationary) 10:00 [2]

Biking warmup at the PT facility.

PT 40:00 [3]

A PT workout directed by the PT person, with a couple of new exercises added, and one removed (leg presses on the weight machine) because two data points suggest that that particular activity might be causing my R knee issues to flare up.
11 AM

Snowboarding 18:00 [4] 4.45 mi (4:03 / mi) +4155ft 2:09 / mi

Probably the last snowboarding or skiing of the season for me, but it was quite good! Gorgeous day, and the conditions on the beginner's loop from the top, which is just right for my snowboarding ability, were quite good. Enough snow cover nearly the whole way down; a couple of places where the slope got narrowed down a bit, but not many.

I only did three runs (had to get home to do some things), but I did them all non-stop, top to bottom, and focused on making it down as quickly as possible, timing myself for each one. First trip down was 6:21, second was 5:45, third was 5:53. On the last one, I was basically moving at least as well as on the 2nd, but there was one spot where I kind of lost control, not falling, but coming to a nearly complete stop to re-group. I'm guessing w/o that glitch, the 3rd would have been a bit faster than the 2nd.

Tuesday Mar 13, 2012 #

Pickleball 1:15:00 [2]

Tues morning pickleball group. Some decent games. Gym was warm, so it felt like more of a workout than normal. In one game, I could tell that the lady I was paired with and I would pretty much dominate the other team, so I played left handed, to even out the sides and give my right elbow a break. It was a success in two ways -- it was a very evenly matched game, so everyone had a good time, and we won 11-8, which is satisfying when I'm playing left handed, thus giving a slight indication that maybe I'm not totally incompetent playing lefty.
11 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 33:19 [1] 2.0 mi (16:39 / mi) +3ft 16:38 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Guide 3

Late morning walk with Homer, around the big block. Very nice day; upper 50's, sunny, but brisk wind from the west -- not enough to make it unpleasant walking, but enough that I abandoned ambitions to go for a bike ride today, unless the wind subsides. (I'm a wimp, I realize, as I know that more determined bikers like swampfox and turbodog don't let a little wind keep them from riding.)
12 PM

Note
weight:177.5lbs

First time I've weighed myself in a while. Weight is up by about 5 pounds, no big surprise given my lack of activity lately. So actually a bit relieved that it's not up more.
6 PM

PT 20:00 [2]

Monday Mar 12, 2012 #

Biking warm up/down (Stationary) 10:00 [2]

Warmup for PT.

PT 25:00 [3]

PT at the Rec Center. The usual leg presses and leg extensions with very light weights (although I'm gradually increasing the weights), plus some of my other assigned exercises. Also, threw in some leg curls this time, even though that's not an assigned exercise.

Pickleball 1:05:00 [2]

Monday night pickleball group. More or less the same crew as last week, but we seemed to have more games with better players on one court and the more beginning players on a separate court, which although it sounds discriminatory/elitist, winds up being a better experience for both the newbies and the people who've played for a while. So all in all, much more enjoyable than last Monday.

Sunday Mar 11, 2012 #

2 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 30:00 [1] 1.27 mi (23:33 / mi) +116ft 21:41 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

Short walk at Corbett Glen park with Cheryl and Homer. Gorgeous day. The stream looked quite nice, although I'm sure the water levels are lower than normal for this time of year.

Biking (Road) 34:47 [3] 8.1 mi (4:18 / mi) +47ft 4:16 / mi
shoes: Bike shoes

First road bike outing of the season. Too nice of a day to pass up a chance to get out. Hadn't done anything in terms of maintenance to the bike over the winter, so no surprise that the tires needed air; but they weren't as flat as I might have expected, they had about 40 psi.

I found out within seconds of starting the ride the the rear derailleur control which shifts to a smaller sprocket was very balky. I could get it to shift but only by being persistent (like 3 tries each time I wanted to go in the direction of a smaller sprocket). The shifter which moved the chain to a larger sprocket was working fine, as were the front shifters in both directions. Hopefully the rear one just needs some lubrication.

The wind, as usual, was deceiving. Not at all noticeable at my back, of course. So heading north (slightly downhill, cross wind) and east (tail wind), I was making blisterinig time, considering how out of shape I was. Heading south (slight uphill, cross wind) wasn't even all that bad. When I finally turned to head west, though ... my speed must have dropped almost in half, and my effort increased, the rest of the way home.

Saturday Mar 10, 2012 #

Pickleball 1:10:00 [2]

Saturday morning pickleball at the Rec Center. 6 people: Jayne, Paul, Carl (a new person), Richard and Joyce, and me. Some good games, some very lopsided games.

Thursday Mar 8, 2012 #

Biking warm up/down (Stationary) 10:00 [1] 1.85 mi (5:24 / mi)

PT 25:00 [2]

PT at the rec center, using the leg press and leg extension machines (at very light weights), plus some misc leg exercises.

Paddling 9:36 [3] 2.0 km (4:48 / km)

Pushed the pace a little more than last time on the rowing machine.

PT 20:00 [2]

More PT back at home (my assigned leg stretches, and leg lifts with 5 lbs on my feet).

Wednesday Mar 7, 2012 #

9 AM

PT 25:00 [2]

Some PT exercises at home. Used 5-pound leg weights for some of the exercises.
10 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 52:29 [1] 3.1 mi (16:56 / mi) +15ft 16:51 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Guide 3

Late-morning walk with Homer, 60 degrees and sunny. Overdressed.

GPS didn't pick up satellites well enough to have a distance reading until around 0.3 miles into the walk, so I added that distance in manually.

Tuesday Mar 6, 2012 #

Pickleball 1:45:00 [2]

Tues morning pickleball group. 14 people total. Some halfway decent competition at times; 4 other guys in the group, one of whom used to play a lot of paddle tennis, so he's picking up pickleball very quickly, even though it's just his 3rd time playing. The other 3 guys aren't as good as he is but are OK. And all of the ladies at least know what they're doing, even though in some cases they don't have a lot of natural athletic skill. So all in all, a more enjoyable group than the Monday night crew, which has some very decent players but also enough clueless people that very few games are all that enjoyable.
2 PM

Snowboarding 19:00 [3] 3.2 mi (5:56 / mi) +2491ft 3:25 / mi

Three runs of snowboarding before reporting for duty at Bristol. Very nice conditions, and very nice weather as well. My snowboarding skills, as meager as they are, seemed to be in fine form, with no falls and no near falls. Of course, it helped that I stayed on easy terrain.

Monday Mar 5, 2012 #

Biking (Stationary) 10:00 [1]

Warmup on bike at the rec center. Very easy, just to get legs a bit warmed up.

PT 20:00 [3]

Various leg exercises, some on weight machines with very light weights.

Paddling 10:43 [2] 2.0 km (5:22 / km)

2 km row on the Concept 2. I was working a bit but still trying to err on the side of easy rather than strenuous, until I find out whether rowing has any adverse effect on my knee or elbow issues.

Note

I had an appt with my cardiologist this morning. The appt wasn't as uplifting as I had hoped. An EKG was done, and he reported that it showed things that were getting somewhat close to atrial fibrillation, which he said can be a serious situation. So he wants to put me on a different drug than the beta blocker that I'm on, which should do more to smooth things out. And he wants to see me in 6-7 weeks to see how things are going. Originally, he said he'd only need to have me see him once a year to make sure things were looking OK. (Implying he's much less optimistic that things are really OK, than in my last appt when he mentioned once a year monitoring.)

On the good news side, the stress EKG didn't show any issues. With exertion, my pulse rate went up (to a max of 156) which I was told is a good sign, and my BP also went up, also normal and good. If my pulse hadn't gone up and the BP hadn't gone up, that would have been more of a cause for concern. So no concerns were expressed about me doing physical activity.

So to simplistically summarize the negative and positive news -- I might die suddenly at any time with no warning, but exercising isn't likely to be the cause of my sudden demise, so no harm in exercising.
2 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 45:22 [1] 2.42 mi (18:46 / mi) +4ft 18:44 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

Mid afternoon walk with Homer. Sunny, only a light wind, but very cold, only really a factor in my hands which did not stay warm. Mittens would have been in order.
7 PM

Pickleball 1:30:00 [1]

Monday night pickleball group. Again, an extremely wide range of abilities, which meant that many of the games weren't very challenging nor much fun. But a few good games happened.

Sunday Mar 4, 2012 #

PT 25:00 [3]

Some PT this morning. Didn't get through the whole regimen of exercises I've been assigned -- may do more this evening, and might go to the rec center to utilize some equipment.

Thursday Mar 1, 2012 #

9 AM

PT 25:00 [2]

PT, focusing on the exercises I had been doing prior to my last appt, thus avoiding ones that seemed to make things worse, for now anyway.
10 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 41:37 [1] 2.39 mi (17:25 / mi) +2ft 17:24 / mi

Walk with Homer, around the big block. Knees feel fine today, when walking on level ground. Even much better than yesterday when going down stairs, but not problem-free.
