Orienteering 1:13:52 [2] ***** 2.15 mi (34:21 / mi) +447ft 28:42 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

Orienteering training event at Mendon, organized by Karl Kolva. The exercise involved using a map of the most detailed portion of Mendon, east of Calvary lodge. The map did not have any trails shown on it, so the point of the exercise was to navigate using mainly contours (with vegetation information also available, but there were few places where that was of significant help).

I found it very useful, and found that I was reasonably successful at keeping track of where I was using contours, more so than I normally am during any competition. I think there were at least 3 reasons for that: 1) The map was 1:5000 which made it possible even for my aging eyesight to read the detail; 2) Karl emphasized to not focus on speed, just on staying connected with the contours, and I followed his suggestion and really took my time, unlike during competition; and 3) Since the only goal of the activity was reading contours, it was easy to stay focused on that task, in contrast to a meet, where a lot of the navigation is done using trails at a much faster speed, so it is then necessary to shift gears to reading details when needed.

Excellent training activity.

Running 1:19:28 [2] 8.61 mi (9:14 / mi) +188ft 9:03 / mi
max:150 shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

Semi-long run to take advantage of a cool morning (around 64F when I started out, rising to maybe 70). Even had some light rain for the first couple of miles.

This was the first run of more than around 5 miles in a while, and it really showed. I felt pretty lousy for the about last half of the run, and took a couple of walking breaks (one of them fairly lengthy, near the end of the run). (Time and distance of walks not included in workout.) I didn't eat anything before I went out so that may have had something to do with it.

Helping Anne with more rogaine training; her last training session prior to this weekend's rogaine (where she will be Stina's partner).

I wasn't energetic enough to accompany her on her entire training session this morning; she walked 4.5 miles (in Iron. Bay Park West) before I met up with her, and she was on her way to walking around the Ellison Wetlands (from Empire to Old Browncroft, then back on the Tryon Park side) when I bailed out on her. I'm guessing she'll wind up doing 14 miles or so.
4 PM

Note

Heard from Anne after she completed her training today. She covered 17 miles at an average of 24 min/mile (with lots of climb). Sounds like a worthwhile training session, which will hopefully prepare her to be able to keep up with Stina.

Running 49:30 [2] 5.35 mi (9:15 / mi) +243ft 8:52 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Last day in Fulton, MO. Actually just a partial day -- flight leaves St. Louis at 2:29 pm. No visits with relatives today, and I don't need to check out until 11 am, so I did another run through Fulton this morning. Not as hot as the last couple of days; 74 degrees with 70 deg. dew point.

Running 42:36 [2] 4.57 mi (9:19 / mi) +256ft 8:51 / mi
max:140 shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Away for the weekend for a family reunion in Fulton, MO. Staying in a motel on the outskirts of town. Tried to get going early enough to beat the very significant heat, but wasn't totally successful. The Natl Weather Service said it was 78 when I went out around 7:30, and 81 when I got back, but a bank thermometer I passed about mid-run said 87 degrees.

Ran into town, past Westminster College and William Woods college, through downtown, and back through Westminster (mainly past their athletic fields) on the way back.

Running 50:50 [2] 5.72 mi (8:53 / mi) +45ft 8:49 / mi
shoes: Gel Kahana 4 July 2010

Mid-day run, started out on Hojack Trail at Klem. Ran down to North Ponds Park, one loop around the park, then headed up the bird sanctuary trail. It started to rain lightly at North Ponds Park, then it rained heavier when I was on the bird trail. Then some distant thunder, and then some closer-sounding thunder. I decided to find what shelter I could, which at that point was in a wooded area that had a small valley/gully where I felt like I was a little lower than any nearby area. Whether that helped minimize risk of a lightning strike or not, who knows. Finally, the thunder seemed to diminish, as did the rain, and I continued on.

I checked the weather radar before I left and it didn't look particularly troubling, so I guess radar doesn't always predict what might be happening soon.

Running long 1:19:29 [1] 8.59 mi (9:15 / mi) +171ft 9:05 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

Went down to Lavine's to drop off some orienteering supplies that I had borrowed on behalf of the Bayview YMCA, then parked on Highland Ave. near St. John's Home and did a run from there. Mid 70's, kind of humid, but overcast, with a slight breeze, so not that bad of a day to run. A little rain feel but for the most part the run was rain-free.

Running 38:14 [1] 4.2 mi (9:06 / mi) +93ft 8:55 / mi
shoes: Gel Kahana 4 July 2010

Mid-day run on the Hojack Trail, from Klem to Lake and back.

Relatively comfortable day, compared to recent weather -- upper 70s.

This run was partly done as a shake-down run for a new pair of shoes, Asics Gel Kahana 4, purchased a couple of days ago at DSW. I initially started using Kahanas (the first version) in 2007, and liked them a lot -- they're inexpensive (around $60), fit my feet and gait very well, and the soles hold up for many miles, even on some tough trails. They're the shoes I wore on the Pike's Peak ascent, and on the Ridge Walk, both in 2007.

The subsequent versions have also been good, although my sense is that the original version was somewhat more durable in terms of sole wear.

In any event, I liked this new pair, based on a very non-challenging run for them.

Running 1:01:50 [2] 6.76 mi (9:09 / mi) +164ft 8:56 / mi
max:130 shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

Urban run, from Park Ave a few blocks west of Culver.

Had planned on dropping some orienteering supplies I borrowed off at Lavine's garage after the run, but totally forgot. A lame excuse is because it started raining pretty hard about when I got back to the car.

Orienteering race (Sprint) 19:16 [4] 2.0 km (9:38 / km) +220ft 8:15 / km
shoes: Asics GT-2130 Trail

I started out roughly, finished roughly, and didn't usually feel like I had any sort of "flow" (a term I learned from Cristina's recent log). Thus I was quite shocked to find out that I wound up in second place. Guess others had even more trouble.

When I looked turned over the map at the start, it took me a while to decipher things -- there was a mass of control circles, numbers, and criss-crossing connection lines in the area of 1, 2, 8, 9, and 11. It took me a while to find where "1" was (not finding 1 in the terrain, mind you, just finding 1 on the map!). I headed up the hill and was immediately disoriented. Not a good way to start. I finally got connected with the map, found 1.

Then no major problems, but like I said, no real flow, after that. Well, one problem that I recall now, going from 8 to 9, a distance of less than 100 m, I'm sure. I probably should have gone on a compass bearing, but I tried to use the trails and got fairly botched up. No major loss of time, maybe 20-30 seconds, just felt very clumsy having to struggle with what should be such a simple leg.

From 11 to the finish, I intended to take the trails that go almost right from the control to the finish, but got disoriented and headed more straight down the hill, hitting the parking lot 50 m or so west of the lodge, then running in from there. I was about 30 seconds slower than Zach on this leg, and we had similar total times, so that's how much I figure my bumbling cost me on the final leg.

Garmin distance was 1.53 miles.
6 PM

Orienteering race (Score-O) 58:27 [4] 4.06 mi (14:23 / mi) +432ft 13:04 / mi
shoes: Asics GT-2130 Trail

Got 45 out of 50 controls.

A major aggravation was that my punch card started disintegrating after about the 5th control, and was a soggy mess by the time I finished. I learned after the race that there was tape available to semi-waterproof the punch card, which I certainly should have used. As it was, I bet I lost 10-20 seconds at each control, between fishing my punch card out of my folded-up map (to minimize touching it with wet hands), finding the state I needed on the soggy punch card, then putting the punch card back into the folded-up map.

Really lousy strategy that I picked, but that is to a large part a credit to the challenging course that Steve set. No real "good" route. But still, I picked an unusually poor route. Almost embarrassed to show the order I did the controls in, but I will when I have a bit more time later. Even over and above my poor route, I made some real blunders. One of them was going for the relatively remote WY (how appropriate) when it should have been obvious to me (this was relatively late in the hour) that I was never going to get them all. I suspect I could have gotten three other controls in the time I spent getting to and from WY. If I had bypassed WY and MA, I think I could have gotten the rest, which would have given me 48 instead of 45.

4:30:12 [1] 12.22 mi (22:06 / mi) +2214ft 18:52 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

This was actually rogaine training, as opposed to other "workouts" by that name, which consisted of following LPGA golfers around Locust Hill.

Anne S. has entered the CNYO rogaine with Stina, in the 24-hour division, and she wanted to get in a couple of fairly long hikes to get in shape so she wouldn't be a drag on Stina. This was the first of them. We parked at the Ellison Wetlands parking lot, walked up Empire into Lincoln Park, did a loop around some trails there, then back to Empire. Then went through Ellison Wetlands to Ellison Park, managing barely to get through the very overgrown trail along the creek that goes under Browncroft, into Ellison. Didn't go far into Ellison, because it was about time to turn around and head back.

The climb, once again, is what AP says it is. It seems high this time, but could possibly be close to correct, because there were certainly a lot of substantial hills we climbed in the two parks. I still think it's a bit suspect, though.

Running 41:43 [3] 4.19 mi (9:57 / mi) +110ft 9:43 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

This workout fell far short of what I intended. Probably because I decided to do some painting related work first, and it was quite warm when I finally ran.

Intended to do a moderately long run on the Whiting Rd trails -- my goal was three loops around the perimeter trail (total distance around 7.8 miles). By the time I started (after 11:00), it was around 82 and humid. When I finished, weather report on the radio said it was 87. The sunny parts of the trails (which is the better part of the first mile) were really unpleasant, and you could just feel the humidity rising up from the vegetation.

Anyway, about halfway through the first loop I scaled back my ambitions to two loops. Then toward the end of the first loop, I scaled them back further, to one full loop and one abbreviated loop (omitting the part of the Orange loop that is in the southern portion, which is predominantly in the sun).

Even though the pace wasn't impressive, the effort was pretty significant.

PS: The climb reported (110 feet) is what AP calculates from the GPS information and/or USGS contour information (not sure how it does it). I suspect the climb was significantly more than 110 feet. The Garmin Training Center, which I know gives totally bogus climbs, says it was around 1100 feet, obviously way higher than true climb. I'll have to look again at the LIDAR contours and see what that gives for climb. I'll report back when I've done that.

Walking 3:00:00 [0] 3.7 mi (48:39 / mi) +114ft 47:16 / mi
shoes: Merrell Overdrive

Zero intensity walking, to and from Corn Hill festival from where we parked, and walking around the festival.

If you click on the globe, ignore everything past around 3.7 miles. I thought I hit the stop button on the GPS when I was approaching the car, but either I didn't, or I hit it twice, because the GPS was still recording when I was in the car on 490, I realized.

Running (Trails) 27:58 [4] 3.15 mi (8:53 / mi) +92ft 8:38 / mi
max:150 shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

Whiting Rd trails. Kind of a rushed workout, as I had relatively little time between our Corn Hill visit, and a wedding gig I needed to be at late afternoon. Went up to Whiting with Cheryl and Homer, with them walking and me running. I did one full perimeter loop, running pretty hard (averaging 9:10/mile which for me is a pretty fast pace for this loop), then I ran a short out and back while waiting for Cheryl and Homer to arrive.

Short workout, but not easy, and felt way better than nothing, which I almost did.

Running 44:01 [4] 4.93 mi (8:56 / mi) +92ft 8:46 / mi
max:155 shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

Fleet Feet run at Remington's. Didn't run yesterday because of heat (wimped out), and hadn't run today. Usually I have something going on Th night, but not tonight, so I figured why not do the group run, it would be a little motivational to have others running and suffering the heat along with me.

The courses offered were 2, 3, and 5 miles. I did the 5 mile.

Decent turnout, maybe 40 people. I started off at what seemed like a nice easy pace of around 9:00/mile. Didn't run with anyone, despite it being a group run -- just no one at my pace. Boots was with a group of around 4 people in sight ahead of me, but I would have had to push the pace around 10 sec / mile faster to stay with them, and I wasn't motivated to do that. Nobody anywhere close behind me. After 2-3 miles, the "easy" 9:00 pace started feeling like a race pace, given the 90-degree or so heat.

Nice after-run stuff -- drink specials at Remington's ($3 drafts, including top shelf microbrews) and free food, nice salad, watermelon, meatballs, and chicken.

Note

Rest day, for the most part. Got myself out in the heat to do a few hours of house painting (making sure I was in the shade). Really felt lousy first thing this morning; no way was I up for a run or anything required exertion. Possibly a combination of a tough run (combined with a nice fall) on Monday, an easier run yesterday (but still not extremely easy because of the heat), and then being out on our boat on the lake until pretty late into the evening yesterday (well after dark). Or maybe I'm just getting wimpy and need to HTFU. Who knows ....

Running 53:42 [2] 5.55 mi (9:41 / mi) +105ft 9:30 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

Morning run; tried to get out earlier than yesterday, and I was somewhat successful, but not as early as I would have liked. Yesterday, started around 8:20; today, around 7:20. It was low 70's when I started, probably mid 70's when I finished, but quite humid.

Avoided hills (another difference from yesterday). Hojack trail, from Klem Rd to near Holt Rd, then back to Vosburg, and back to Klem.

The temperature was actually a lot less annoying than the FDF's, which seemed plentiful on most of the route covered.

Running (Trails) 1:01:46 [3] 6.21 mi (9:57 / mi) +312ft 9:30 / mi
shoes: New Balance 749 (trail)

Morning run, but not early enough to beat the heat. Probably around 80 degrees when I started; now it is 84, with a 68 degree dew point. My plan was to run between 8-10 miles but I didn't make it.

Started at Klem and Hojack. Took Hojack to Vosburg, then east on Vosburg for a short distance to the corner of Vosburg and Baker, at which point I took the short but steep uphill trail to the "Big Field". Ran clockwise on the field trail, about 3/4 of the way around, to the trail to the "Big Woods". Eventually came out on Pellet. Took the White trail into the Whiting Rd trail system, then counter-clockwise around the perimeter trail.

I was really out of gas at that point, not helped by taking a dumb fall on the Red trail of the Whiting system. I tripped on a small stump that probably was no more than an inch high, right before a bridge. I stumbled and landed on the bridge, sliding a few inches along the wooden surface. Ran into Anne who was doing a loop around Whiting trails. She offered to give me a ride back to my car, which was appreciated at that point.

Combination of being out of shape due to little running the past couple of weeks, and a warm morning, led to a pretty disappointing run.

Running 48:28 [2] 5.5 mi (8:49 / mi) +49ft 8:44 / mi
max:145 weight:174lbs shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

Late afternoon run, mostly on Hojack Trail. Started at Klem; ran SE to Holt, then to Orchard, to the bird sanctuary trail on the N side of Orchard. Up the bird trail to Rt 250, back the trail to Orchard, then once around (actually about 80% around) the loop path at North Ponds Park, back to Orchard, to Holt, to Hojack, and back to Klem.

8:58/mile up to Rt. 250, 8:40/mile for the rest of the run.

Running 23:46 [2] 2.76 mi (8:37 / mi)
max:145 shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

Kind of a recovery run; recovering from our trip to Ohiopyle, PA. Lots of (mostly non-running) activities down there, plus a reasonably stressful drive home yesterday (some pretty heavy traffic in construction areas).

Ran from home, over to Maple, to Ridge, Bay, Woodland, back home.
