Genesee County Park, with Fred. I gave him the option of one of three courses: Beginner (White), Adv. Beginner (Yellow), and Short Advanced (kind of a Green). He chose the latter, and was pretty insistent on it. It turned out to be a bit too much -- we managed 7 controls in 83 minutes, and it looked like it would be at least another hour to get controls 8-13, so we bailed after 7 (which was very close to the finish area).
Still, it seemed like a good outing for him. He got to experience a lot of off trail travel, getting accustomed to stepping over logs, dodging trees, and fighting through some semi-thick vegetation for short stretches. And he asked a lot of questions about the map and symbols he usually doesn't encounter, like a boulder cluster we came across close to the trail. Unfortunately, it was a very unimpressive boulder cluster, nothing I would have deemed worthy to make it onto the map -- a few small rocks, none of which were more than about a foot high, and most of them covered with moss or other vegetation to make them nearly invisible.
I was pleased, in a way, to see we were not the only DNF -- three cadets from the Maritime academy (Buffalo) and one other person DNF'd.
