Walking (Dog walk) 1:00:00 [1] 2.61 mi (22:59 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

I know I'm not supposed to be doing any substantial walking, but I had already arranged for Linda B to come over and help walk the dogs, so I went ahead with that plan. Tried FR10 and once again it failed to communicate with the computer.

Around the big block, with an excursion into Finn Park.

Note

I had my first post-surgery appt with my arm surgeon this morning. It wasn't the best news I had hoped for.

I've been pretty much pain free since one day after the surgery which was 12 days ago. However, I've been very worried about significant numbness in my thumb, and to a lesser extent, my index finger. So that was the first thing I mentioned to the Dr when he asked how it was going.

He said that the numbness in my thumb did not strike him as normal -- need to bring swelling down to see if that helps, if not, might be a carpal tunnel issue and may need surgery :( I'm not real optimistic about the problem going away if the swelling is reduced, because to me, it didn't look ALL that swollen.

He also said that I shouldn't be doing significant walking as that's not good from a swelling standpoint. More icing needed. Suggests stationary biking as an alternative exercise to walking.

So the one enjoyable physical activity that I thought I was able to do, going for semi long walks, usually with Hanna, I'm not supposed to do after all!

Only good news is that I'm in a brace (Velcro type) which I can take off for showers etc., and it's more comfortable than the highly wrapped splint I had before. Incision also doesn't look too bad.
7 PM

Biking (stationary) 10:00 [2]

My first attempt at stationary biking. Wasn't too bad because I had an interesting Fresh Air podcast to listen to; an interview with the actor and director of the Jimi Hendrix movie.
8 PM

Strength 12:00 [2]

Leg weight lifting.

Walking (Dog walk) 1:01:10 [1] 3.35 mi (18:16 / mi) +18ft 18:10 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Semi long walk with Hanna, to Finn Park, stopped for a dip in the creek, then back via the Rt 104 path. Cheryl and Homer came along as far as the creek, then they headed back the most direct way. Nice day, sunny, mid 60's.
2 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 53:23 [1] 2.39 mi (22:22 / mi) +43ft 21:59 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Checking out Lynch Woods Park again, with a bit more time. With Cheryl and the dogs. Conclusion is the same, not really suitable as as O venue, even though there were definitely some nice parts of the park. But even if were a great park, its small size coupled with its lack of a place to stage a meet from would rule it out in my mind. I'll write up a moderately detailed summary of my observations and send it to the ROC board for their information.
5 PM

Strength 15:00 [3]

Another short fitness room workout.

Strength 12:00 [3]

Very short fitness room workout, between a couple of errands.
11 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 35:11 [1] 2.05 mi (17:12 / mi) +128ft 16:14 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

HJ trail with Hanna. Cheryl and Homer were also there, but their preferred pace was slower than Hanna's and mine. :)
9 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 41:00 [1] 2.25 mi (18:13 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Nighttime walk with Hanna. No GPS carried.

Walking 27:04 [1] 1.4 mi (19:23 / mi) +38ft 18:54 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Checking out Lynch Woods Park, off of Crittendon, a little south of GVP. My time was a bit limited so I didn't give it a thorough checkout. It's pretty small, about 100 acres (Iron. Bay West is 147 acres for comparison). Fairly detailed trail network -- would probably make for a nice Sprint course. But there is no parking area large enough to stage a meet from. It's close to part of GVP but not that close to the part of the park that we actually use. Vegetation was not exceptionally thick -- much of what I saw would probably be light green.
3 PM

Strength 25:00 [3]

Fitness room workout at the rec center.
8 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 40:15 [0] 2.14 mi (18:48 / mi) +6ft 18:45 / mi

Late evening walk with Hanna, while Cheryl took Homer on a much shorter walk.

FR10 still doesn't talk to the computer, so I used my old FR205. This communicates fine but there are several other issues with it, so it's not exactly the perfect solution.

Tuesday Sep 23, 2014 #

10 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 50:40 [1] 2.44 mi (20:46 / mi)
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Dog walk, assisted by Linda Burgey.

Once again, my GPS refused to communicate with the computer. Not sure what's up with that. E-mailed Garmin for help.

Route: out to Bay, to Rt 104, to Maple, took 1st street om right to eventually get to Finn Park, then back via Heathland.

Walking (Dog walk) 1:05:00 [3] 3.7 mi (17:34 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Long walk with Hanna. GPS refuses to connect at the moment. Walked out Rt 104 path to Gravel Rd, down Gravel a bit, then headed back, cutting through Heathland on the way back.
4 PM

Strength 18:00 [3]

Fitness room workout. Doing these leg exercises on a more regular basis is giving some results in how weight I can lift. In fact, I hit a PR in the leg press today, and tied old PRs in the leg extension and leg curl.

Walking (Dog walk) 47:17 [1] 2.09 mi (22:36 / mi) +7ft 22:31 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Dog walk with Linda Burgey assisting. Four dogs total -- our two, plus 2 we are sitting for this weekend, Hershey (fairly similar in size and appearance to Hanna), and Elma, a pipsqueak dog of about 8 pounds. We started with Cheryl and Elma, but they turned back at the half mile mark. From that point on it was Linda, me, Homer, Hanna, and Hershey.

Note

Had the surgery yesterday. Experienced some rather severe pain when the anesthetic block wore off at 9 pm, for 2-3 hours, then it thankfully subsided to a rather low level of discomfort, which is about what the situation currently is. At least the cast (actually a splint well wrapped up with bandages) is distinctly smaller and more pleasant than the previous one.

Strength 20:00 [2]

Fitness room workout. An upside to my arm injury is that now I can't really plat pickleball or run (the thing holding me back from running is that I don't want to get sweaty when I have a cast on), I don't have any reason not to do leg workouts. As a result, I'm increasing the weights I'm able to lift with the various leg workouts I do.

Going in for surgery at 11:30 this morning. Haven't been allowed to eat anything since 8 pm last night, and not allowed to drink anything including water since midnight. So I'll be happy to have this over with so I can eat and drink again.

Walking (Dog walk) 54:05 [1] 2.8 mi (19:20 / mi) +1ft 19:20 / mi

In my current state, there's no way I can take both dogs for a walk, but I offered to Cheryl that I could take Hanna on a semi long walk while she took Homer on a shorter one.

Pickleball (Lefthanded) 13:00 [1]

Trailsnail kindly arranged a pickleball game where everyone agreed to play left-handed, to make things a bit more fair to me ...

Friday Sep 12, 2014 #

11 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 30:00 [0] 1.38 mi (21:44 / mi) +77ft 20:39 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Walk with Cheryl and the dogs on the HJ trail. Carried my GPS and started and stopped it but must have forgotten to save it, as no tracks were found from today.

Arm seems a little more swollen after the walk so maybe I'm not quite ready to get back into much walking.
1 PM

Note

Appt with ortho surgeon to see how the healing is going. Conclusion -- not all that great. Bone in arm is developing a bit of a bend that it shouldn't have. It would continue to heal, but I'd have somewhat impaired range of motion, dexterity, and strength.

He said if I were 20 years younger, the recommendation would be easy --> operate. If I were 20 years older, it would also be easy --> don't operate.

He asked me what types of things I do that involve hands; I said I played electric bass, and I played a lot of pickleball and some tennis. He said based on that input, he would definitely recommend surgery.

An extra benefit is that I should be recovered quite a bit sooner, and definitely out of a cast (and using a splint) quite a bit sooner. So to me it seemed like an easy decision.

The operation is scheduled for this coming Wednesday.

Note

Two days after my very careless fall. My arm injury is feeling a little better today than yesterday, but my rib issue (not sure if they are bruised or cracked) is worse today than yesterday. Not sure what's going on with that; but I suppose I'd be more worried if the arm were feeling worse because that might indicate that the bones were slipping out of alignment which could necessitate an operation which I'd obviously like to avoid.

I was going to accompany Cheryl as she took the dogs for their final walk of the evening, but she observed how gingerly I was moving/walking and said "Are you sure it's a good idea for you to come along?" She had a good point; I re-considered and decided not to join her.

Note

Had to miss the Mendon meet because our church had a service project at the Webster History Museum that Cheryl definitely wanted to do. (And have me also do it!)
4 PM

Note

Then after we got home, things got more exciting and not in a good way, I was watching the end of the Bills game and the beginning of OT; our reception wasn't the greatest. So I decided to go up this small ladder to a lower roof level and tweak the angle of the antenna which often helps. (We're in the dark ages; no cable or dish, have never had it.) Unfortunately I ignored one point of ladder safety which is to have the ladder at an angle of 75 degrees to the ground; this was more like 65 degrees I imagine. And that would have been OK although not ideal if it were resting on grass; but it was resting on our slightly damp brick patio. As I was at the rung a few inches below the roof level, I started to step off onto the roof when the base of the ladder started to slip, and of course kept on slipping, so down I went, landing on the brick patio, totally knocking the wind out of me, and banging me up in multiple ways.

The worst injury was an obviously broken (could tell by looking at it, with its rather odd angle where it is supposed to be straight) right arm just above my wrist.

A call by Cheryl to 911 followed, then being tended to by the fine W Webster FD (including the son of one of the people tragically murdered in the Christmas Eve ambush in 2012), then by an ambulance trip to Roch General. Then about 5 hours total there, including my arm being maneuvered back into its proper configuration and put in a cast.

So no pickleball for a couple of months, and no orienteering for at least a while (no Ellicotteville rogaine and no A meet competing pretty much for sure).

Not the way I had expected my day to go!!

3 PM

Pickleball 2:15:00 [3]

Indoors, at the Rec Center. Got in lots of good games. Three were quite humbling -- in the foursome consisting of me, Pam, Sean, and Mike S. All are decided stronger players than I am. We played 3 games with all partner combinations, and no surprise, I was on the losing team each time.
9 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 23:44 [1] 1.02 mi (23:16 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Late evening dog walk. Shorter than normal because both dogs did their business sooner than normal and seemed quite content to turn around at that point.

9 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 1:03:12 [1] 3.48 mi (18:09 / mi) +92ft 17:42 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Morning long dog walk, on the Hojack Trail. A bit warm (upper 70's according to the radio weather report on the drive back), but the Hojack Trail was shaded nearly the entire way, and there were two water stops for the dogs (at one of which Homer totally immersed himself), so the dogs were happy.
9 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 31:30 [1] 1.5 mi (21:02 / mi) +1ft 21:01 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Late-evening walk with just Hanna this time. Cheryl felt that Homer didn't have the energy to do the length/pace of the walk I usually take them on, so she walked Homer (shorter) while Hanna and I enjoyed a faster than usual (but also a bit shorter than usual) walk!

9 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 1:03:55 [1] 3.12 mi (20:29 / mi) +15ft 20:23 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 4

Longer than usual dog walk to take advantage of the relatively mild temperatures (low 70's at our house) before it got hot this afternoon and tomorrow. Stopped at the creek at Finn Park for a cooling dip.
2 PM

Pickleball 1:45:00 [3]

Rec Center, indoors. Included 1.5 games of singles against Carole.
6 PM

Tennis 1:30:00 [2]

The instructor for the beginners class that Cheryl and I had taken invited me to join in with an intermediate class he held. I would say I was at the lower end of the ability level but not totally out of my league. Got a lot out of it in any event. At Webster Thomas courts.

Running 34:55 [3] 4.01 mi (8:42 / mi) +39ft 8:37 / mi

Hojack Trail, with Hanna. She actually is seeming like a decent running dog. Not too many stops for sniffing etc. There were 4 water stops for her (2 going out, 2 coming back) which I let her take advantage of, which she did eagerly.

Cheryl and Homer also came along again, and walked while we were running.
