Snowboarding 20:00 [2]

Two snowboarding runs at Bristol, before I reported for work this evening.

Had to be about the best snowboarding conditions I've ever encountered. I actually felt like I knew what I was doing, even on Rocket.

Snowboarding 20:00 [2]

Two snowboarding runs at Bristol, after getting off of work on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon.

Running 1:22:40 [3] 8.54 mi (9:41 / mi)
weight:169.5lbs shoes: Asics Gel Kahana 10-07 - screw

Semi long run on a cool but sunny afternoon, first full day back in Webster. Ran from my house, down Rt 104 path to 5 ML Rd, to Klem, to Whiting, to Shoemaker to T, right on Van Alstyne, to Vosburg, to Adams, to Vosburg, cross Bay Rd to Dewitt, to Volk, Bay, and finally home to Woodland. With Anne. We both agreed it was nicer running when there is more oxygen in the air.

Downhill skiing 3:30:00 [2] 39.0 mi (5:23 / mi)

Skiing at Vail. Great day!

Got on the first lift at 8:32 am (2 minutes after they opened), and got on our last lift up at 4:01 pm, officially 1 minute after the lifts closed, but I guess the lifties were feeling charitable.

Cheryl, Anne, and I skied together, occasionally joining up with Anne's son Tom, and Tom's long-time friend Todd. The Forerunner said we covered 59 miles, but I didn't bother stopping the watch when we went up the lifts. My rough estimate is that our skiing distance was about 2/3 of the total, with the lift distance about 1/3. Forerunner said we did 32,000 vertical feet of descent. The morning was totally sunny, then some clouds rolled in but nothing too bad, still quite a bit of sun the rest of the day.

Running 58:50 [3] 5.4 mi (10:54 / mi) +262ft 10:25 / mi
shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail

Took the day off of skiing to rest up for Vail the next day. Anne and I went for a run on the bike path along the river that flows through Breckenridge. We were both feeling the effects of the 9600 foot altitude, even though this was about our 5th day at altitude. Plus, the path, while not hilly, does have a pitch to it, rising gradually about 150 feet on the section we did (the only plowed and passable section). We did two "loops" (out and back and then repeat). Although we thought we were doing an easy pace, we found we had to take short walking breaks every 5 minutes or so. (Time and distance of walking breaks included in the stats.) Nice day, mid 30's, not very windy.

Downhill skiing 2:00:00 [2] 12.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Skiing at Ski Cooper, near Leadville. It's a small area by Colorado standards, vertical drop of 1200 feet, same as Bristol. But it's cheap and very laid back. The place looks like it hasn't changed in decades. Plus it's very uncrowded -- zero lift lines the whole day. Skied with Cheryl, Anne, Anne's son Tom, our daughter Andrea, and her b/f Triscuit.

Downhill skiing 3:00:00 [3] 20.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Skiing at Copper Mountain. Great day, skied very hard. The group included me, my wife Cheryl, our friend Anne, our daughter Andrea who lives in Steamboat Springs and came down for a couple of days, along with her boyfriend Triscuit. In addition, Anne's son Tom works at Copper, so we met up with him before we headed out skiing, and then met him for lunch on his lunch break. Sunny but quite chilly and a bit windy the whole day. Crowds were remarkably not too bad, considering it was President's day. Probably no lift lines were more than about 5 minutes.

Running 30:00 [3] 2.73 mi (11:00 / mi)
shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail

The weather was terrible for skiing -- cold, strong winds, snow in the air but not really accumulating anything significant on the ground. We decided to bag skiing for the day. I went for a run in downtown Breckenridge, along a bike path along the stream running through town. Not a pleasant day for running either. The footing was OK but not great. Was aiming for a 60 minute run but could only last 30 minutes due to the cold, windy weather. My hands were what just wouldn't stay warm. Plus, the altitude -- 9600 feet -- was a major factor, even though the run was pretty much flat.

Downhill skiing 2:30:00 [2]

Skiing at Breckenridge. Very nice day, sunny nearly the whole day, upper 20's. Fairly crowded, which wasn't unexpected for President's Day weekend. But we more or less figured out what lift to avoid, and also found that we usually were better off going in the singles line. Once we did that, most of our waits were in the 5-10 minute range.

I took a wicked fall on our last run of the day. I was going down an intermediate slope pretty fast, and saw ahead of me a rise and then fall in the terrain. I was afraid I was going fast enough that it would put me airborne, and I tried to check my speed a bit before I hit it. Wasn't enough, though -- I did go airborne, and was balanced awkwardly as I was getting into a turn to try to slow down. I knew it was trouble, and sure enough, I landed very badly, lost a ski, and my back and then my head slammed into the snow pretty hard. I haven't been a helmet wearer up to now -- but this is making me think very seriously of getting one. I don't think there has been any major brain damage at least. :) But for a few seconds after hitting my head, I really wasn't sure what the outcome would be.

Running 36:00 [2] 4.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Kahana 10-07 - screw

Hadn't run in quite a few days, partly because of the weather Monday (not quite as bad as Sunday when I did run, but I just wasn't mentally up for two wicked days in a row), and partly because I worked at Bristol Tues and Wed. Leaving for Colorado for a week of skiing this evening, and I wanted to at least get a little run in today, since I don't expect to run much out in CO. Although if the weather is cooperative, I might get in a few runs.

Ran on the Hojack trail, from Klem to Lake and back.

Large tree down across the trail just west of Drum Rd; passable, but barely.

Walking 15:00 [3] 1.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail

A very vigorous race-walk intensity, going through O'Hare airport. Our flight from Rochester was delayed getting into Chicago due to air traffic control issues in Chicago, so we landed around 9:00, with our flight to Denver scheduled for 9:29, and the gate was in a totally different wing, a LONG walk away. Normally I wouldn't log as a workout walking from gate to gate in an airport, but this was definitely a high-intensity, very stressful, effort!

We did make the flight, and are now in Denver, heading to Breckenridge today.

Running 1:07:20 [1] 6.51 mi (10:21 / mi)
weight:173.5lbs shoes: Asics Gel Kahana 10-07 - screw

Cold, windy day, but Anne and I decided to persevere and get a run in anyway. We wimped out and didn't do a very long run though, just didn't have that much determination.

We ran on the Genesee River Trail from Turning Point Park to Ontario Beach Park, and along the boardwalk at the beach a ways. Much of the trail was sheltered pretty well from the wind, but the part that goes out over the river by Turning Pt Park was brutal, as was the unsheltered part going through the parking lot by the beach.

The footing was also pretty poor, nearly the whole way. There was a base of irregular ice (from where there was slushy snow, with footprints in it, which froze), covered by about an inch of fresh snow.

Running 1:06:00 [1] 7.0 mi (9:26 / mi)
weight:172lbs shoes: Asics Gel Kahana 10-07 - screw

Late afternoon run on the roads around here, with Anne. We were going to do a longer run but neither of us felt the greatest, so we just did 7. From my house, to Maple, to Klem, north on Drum, north on Baker to Lake, east on Lake to Pellet, south on Pellet to where it ends in T (can't remember the name), west on that road to Drum, south on Drum to Klem to Maple and back home.

Snowboarding 40:00 [2]

Snowboarding at Bristol, after getting off of work. Three runs. Conditions decent but snow guns on Sunset and Infinity were just getting cranked up which were annoying to snowboard through.

Wednesday Feb 6, 2008 #

Running 1:15:00 [3] 8.35 mi (8:59 / mi)
weight:172lbs shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail

Treadmill workout at Bayview Y. Started around 5 mph, increased by 0.1 every minute up to 9.0 mph, then gradually reduced speed to around 6.5 mph until the end.

Snowboarding 15:00 [2]

Worked at Bristol late afternoon and evening, got there just early enough to head out for one run from the top on the snowboard. Didn't have any need for any more than a single run anyway; not the greatest day. The top half of the mountain was in a cloud, and the conditions were unexpectedly icy/hard packed (unexpected for a 50 degree day).

Running long 1:33:46 [2] 10.12 mi (9:16 / mi)
weight:170lbs shoes: Asics Gel Kahana 10-07 - screw

Long run with Anne, from my house, to Maple, north to Klem, east on Klem to Phillips and return. Felt like I was working pretty hard for a 9:15 pace, and no excuse about the footing (shoulder was clear of snow for the most part). I've started a new medication for blood pressure, a week ago, and I'm wondering if it may be having a detrimental effect on running pace. I won't make any conclusions until I get at least a few more weeks under my belt. (BP medication seems very effective at what it's intended for at least; my BP was 105/62 about 30 minutes after my run today.)

Running 1:32:40 [1] 7.76 mi (11:56 / mi)
weight:172lbs shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail

Very easy run, with a lot of walking mixed in, on the canal path from Shoen Place heading east. With Sue D., Anne, and Ben (Anne's nephew). Ben turned around at the 2.5 mile mark to give him a 5 mile run. Sue, Anne, and I covered nearly 8 miles but with some significant walking breaks (included in the time and distance) thrown in, to appease Sue. We're trying to get her geared up to attempt a spring marathon or half marathon, but she's nowhere near ready to do any longer, continuous running.

Footing was semi bad on the canal path -- generally not terribly icy except in sections, but slick enough and snowy enough to be a hindrance. Most of our running was at around 10 minutes/mile; Anne commented that it felt like the effort of running 9:15/mile which I agreed with.
