Note

I decided to call my arm "recovered". I'm not 100% recovered, but I don't think I'll ever be totally back to normal. I am back to playing pickleball right handed, and I can do most things that I used to be able to do. Still somewhat limited on range of motion and strength.
12 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 50:15 [1] 2.44 mi (20:38 / mi) +8ft 20:34 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Heat wave -- sunny, around 20 degrees, and little wind.
3 PM

Pickleball 1:30:00 [2]

Lots of players, way too many ... long time sitting out between my turns to play. Still, had a few very enjoyable games. And it's nice being back playing right handed.

11 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 48:36 [1] 2.35 mi (20:42 / mi) +6ft 20:39 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Cool (13 degrees) but not much wind and intermittent sunshine. Over to Finn Park, onto some of the trails, and back. There was one stretch where snowshoes would have been highly desirable to have on.

10 AM

Pickleball 50:00 [3]

Only played 3 games (well, sort of half of another game), but the level of competition was quite good so it was worthwhile. Played entirely right handed.
4 PM

Walking 25:00 [1] 1.2 mi (20:50 / mi)
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Dog walk, around the little block and then around the path through the woods. Relatively balmy 18 degrees and little wind.

Snowshoeing (Dog walk) 25:51 [2] 1.18 mi (21:54 / mi) +1ft 21:53 / mi

+3 F, moderately windy, -12 wind chill, so fine!!!

Actually I was in the woods most of the time, so the wind chill there was negligible. In fact, I was a bit overdressed.

Walked three times around the loop trail in the woods at the end of our street, to re-establish the trail where it had mostly drifted shut, and to smooth out the trail in other spots.
4 PM

Snowshoeing (Dog walk) 47:12 [2] 2.2 mi (21:27 / mi) +6ft 21:24 / mi

Sunny, but 5 degrees and quite windy. Weather service said winds were 12 mph from the west, but they sure seemed a lot stronger than that. No issues with walking down the Rt 104 path with the wind, but it was quite chilly going into the wind coming back on Heathland.
10 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 12:00 [3] 0.56 mi (21:26 / mi)
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Brrrr ... temp was -4, wind chill was -25, and it felt like it! One loop through the woods trail at the end of the street.

Trail which I had somewhat re-established on snowshoes today had drifted shut in one 20 yard stretch, where it is subject to a lot of wind.

Orienteering (Snowshoeing) 1:29:09 [3] ** 4.5 mi (19:50 / mi) +93ft 19:27 / mi
spiked:13/13c

Webster Ski-O, Green course, on snowshoes. Pretty slow going much of the way, due to lots of fresh snow and less-than-expected tracking on many of the smaller trails. The Mendon course favored runners vs skiers, while this course certainly favored skiers vs people doing it using snowshoes, or worse, regular shoes/boots.

One very long, kind of annoying dogleg, based on my route choice (6-7-8), but I could have picked a different route from 6 to 7 and avoided the dogleg.

When I left, I was in last place out of 3 finishers on the Green course. I have my fingers crossed that someone who was still out on the course when I left took longer than I did so I don't have the honor of last place ...

Pickleball 2:05:00 [2]

Drop-in pickleball at the Rec Center. Player right-handed the entire time. I'll see, tomorrow probably, if that was a mistake or not ...
5 PM

Snowblowing 15:00 [0]

A couple of inches had fallen today, plus the plow had come through, so I decided after getting home from pickleball that I'd clear the snow from the driveway.

Snowblowing 25:00 [0]
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Snowblowing the driveway, after getting home from a few days at Holiday Valley and finding 5 inches of fresh snow covering it. I have to say, it's great having a snowblower ... without one, it would have been at least a little stressful to have to deal with shoveling the driveway, on top of wanting to unpack and unwind from the trip, plus go down and fetch our dogs from our dog-sitter in Bristol Center. Having a snowblower -- no issues! Start it up (on the first pull), then clear out the driveway and sidewalk in little time or effort.
5 PM

Snowshoeing (Dog walk) 20:00 [1] 0.85 mi (23:32 / mi)

Snowshoed with the dogs on the trail through the woods at the end of our street (twice around), then a short jaunt over into the next neighborhood, mainly to tramp down a bit of a path from the woods to the next street. Sunny but still a bit on the nippy side (6 degrees I think it was).

Downhill skiing 2:57:46 [2] 12.78 mi (13:55 / mi) +7200ft 9:04 / mi

Nice nippy morning -- 3 below zero with a respectable (although not Laramie-force) wind. I think the wind chill was reported to be -25 or so. I had 4 layers on top plus my ski jacket. Toe warmers, hand warmers. Two layers on my head plus my helmet.
1 PM

Downhill skiing 35:08 [0] 3.06 mi (11:28 / mi) +1737ft 7:28 / mi

Some more skiing in sub zero wind chills! Actually more was done but wasn't recorded as the GPS was inadvertently turned off.

Took way more than the usual warm-up breaks.

8 AM

Downhill skiing 1:46:16 [1] 11.61 mi (9:09 / mi) +6649ft 5:56 / mi

Holiday Valley, with Cheryl and trailsnail. Morning until mid-morning break.
11 AM

Downhill skiing 1:01:16 [1] 5.75 mi (10:39 / mi) +3188ft 6:59 / mi

More skiing, from mid-morning break until we quit early afternoon. Day started at 10 degrees, rose slightly to 15 degrees by the time we quit. I stayed reasonably warm (thanks to chemical toe-warmers which did their job), except my hands were getting cold just before the mid-morning break, and then again just before we stopped for the day.

Monday Feb 16, 2015 #

8 AM

Snowshoeing (Dog walk) 18:00 [3] 0.6 mi (29:59 / mi)

First, around the path through the woods in our back yard. Very deep snow to work my way through -- no one had walked or snowshoed the path in a while. The dogs were free ranging at that point and even they chose not to follow me, not a bad decision, since it would have been a lot tougher for them than me. Then down to the end of the street and around the path through the woods, with the dogs in tow this time.

Sunday Feb 15, 2015 #

11 AM

Snowshoeing (Dog walk) 26:54 [2] 1.16 mi (23:11 / mi) +2ft 23:09 / mi

To the woods at the end of the street, then 3 times around the loop, in an effort to re-establish the beaten path for the benefit of Cheryl and me and a few other dog walkers that use the path. Back in the wooded area I think my efforts will be reasonably successful, but there is one section, near the next street (Heathland), where the wind whips through and buries the path pretty quickly. I walked through there last night and there was zero sign of any tracks today. Some of the drifts were deep enough that, even with my snowshoes, I was sinking about a foot into the snow.

Took a short side trip off the path to a fallen tree that our neighbor who lives at the very end of the street, right next to the woods, has been cutting up for firewood.

Strength 8:39 [3] 0.1 mi (1:30:59 / mi)

Using an aluminum roof rake to remove some snow from the garage roof and the porch roof, esp. where it is above a part of our kitchen. It is a pretty strenuous upper body workout, and my upper body strength has always been pretty minimal, so 8 minutes was all I could last. Got a fair amount of snow off of the roof though.
2 PM

Pickleball 1:45:00 [3]

Played right-handed more than I should have, 3 games I think. I'll see if this was a mistake or not, based on how my wrist and nerve issues in my thumb are doing tomorrow.
10 PM

Snowshoeing (Dog walk) 15:00 [2] 0.5 mi (29:59 / mi)

Late-evening dog walk. I decided to don my snowshoes since the trail through the woods was most likely drifted over since my snowshoeing outing earlier in the day. Sure enough, it was (in spots), so I'm glad I had the snowshoes on.

Walking (Dog walk) 1:12:55 [1] 2.14 mi (34:01 / mi) +250ft 30:38 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Ellison Wetlands, with Cheryl, trailsnail, Homer, and Hanna. Went w/o snowshoes which was a bit of a mistake because some trails weren't packed down as much as we had anticipated. Nice day for a walk though, with the sauna-like (relative to yesterday and tomorrow at least) temperature in the mid-20's.

Thursday Feb 12, 2015 #

Walking (Dog walk) 1:00:00 [3] 2.5 mi (24:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

A couple of dog walks throughout the day and late evening. Each one colder than the previous one of course!
2 PM

Pickleball (Lefthanded) 2:00:00 [3]

Played one game right-handed, the rest left-handed. So far, no obvious bad effect on my nerve/sensation issue from the right-handed game. We'll see how it is tomorrow. Had a number of decent, competitive games. Last game was 12-10 with trailsnail and I losing to Joyce and Scott -- a game it really seems like we should have won! (And I'm not finger-pointing at my partner in saying that ...)

2 PM

Snowshoeing (Dog walk) 1:07:23 [2] 2.38 mi (28:19 / mi) +342ft 24:55 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Ellison Wetlands, with Homer and Hanna. A few stops to talk to other people and tend to dog droppings (time deducted).

Monday Feb 9, 2015 #

3 PM

Snowshoeing (Dog walk) 51:12 [2] 2.4 mi (21:20 / mi) +5ft 21:18 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Around the big block (Rt 104 path from Bay to Maple), plus 1.75 loops around the path through the woods at the end of our street. The latter to beat down the snow a bit in a semi uniform fashion to make it easier for the dog walkers, which includes but is not limited to Cheryl and me.

A lot of the walking was on roads, where the snowshoes weren't a real help, but they didn't seem like a major hindrance either. But they were extremely helpful on the Rt 104 path, going through the woods, and a few other spots like between Woodland Lane and Brookwood (about 100 feet) where I can't safely walk in Bay Rd, but the snow on the ground off the road is way to deep to realistically walk w/o snowshoes. And also between the cul de sac at the end of Bayside and the Rt 104 path, only about 40 feet or so, but again pretty much impassable w/o snowshoes.
4 PM

Snowblowing 40:00 [3]

Actually two snowblowing sessions, one first thing in the morning, the other after I got back from snowshoeing.
7 PM

Pickleball 1:00:00 [2]

Subbed for ladder league. (On the same court as trailsnail even!) (Who was also subbing.)

2 PM

Snowshoeing (Dog walk) 36:24 [2] 1.4 mi (25:57 / mi) +15ft 25:41 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Snowshoeing in Finn Park. No hills, unlike Ellison Wetlands, but it was still a bit of a workout, esp. when going along the W edge of the field heading south, where I was totally breaking trail. Even with snowshoes (medium sized, definitely not the tiny racing snowshoes) I was generally sinking in 6-8" each step, sometimes more where the snow had drifted deeper.

Snowshoeing (Dog walk) 11:51 [1] 0.29 mi (40:50 / mi) +1ft 40:42 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Three laps around the trail through the woods in our back yard. This is where the dogs usually start their morning dog walk, but since last Monday's snowfall, it has been pretty much impassable to humans, so my goal was to set down some sort of path that could be followed by a person wearing boots as opposed to snowshoes.

Then our across-the-street neighbor Judy was setting out for a walk with her Wheaten Terrier Hugo, so our dogs had to go say hi to Hugo.

1 PM

Snowshoeing (Dog walk) 1:02:42 [2] 2.39 mi (26:13 / mi) +357ft 22:58 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Snowshoeing at Ellison Wetlands, with Homer and Hanna.

Good day for it; enough snow that it was quite helpful to have snowshoes vs boots. Warm enough, upper 20's, so no issues with cold hands/feet etc.
3 PM

Pickleball 2:00:00 [2]

10 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 56:33 [1] 2.61 mi (21:40 / mi) +8ft 21:37 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Rather tough walking on the Rt 104 path and the Finn Park trails. Fortunately snowmobiles had ridden on the path after the Tuesday snowfall (but not after yesterday's/last night's snowfall), which made the path OK to walk on although a bit difficult still.
2 PM

Pickleball 1:20:00 [2]

11 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 42:26 [1] 2.18 mi (19:28 / mi) +8ft 19:24 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Over to Finn Park and back. Slower pace than usual because of lots of snow in the woods at the end of our street, and on the Finn Park trails. Ran into another dog, Sammy, in the park. Homer had met him quite a while ago and they got along OK, but Hanna hadn't. Amazingly, Hanna did OK with him.

Monday Feb 2, 2015 #

Snowblowing 1:20:00 [1]
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Three sessions of snowblowing, trying to more or less keep on top of things. Seems like the snow has subsided for now, so might be no additional sessions this afternoon or evening.
2 PM

Snowshoeing (Dog walk) 30:00 [2] 1.0 mi (30:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Down to the end of the street, then 3 loops around the trail through the woods.

Sunday Feb 1, 2015 #

1 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 48:36 [1] 2.5 mi (19:27 / mi) +7ft 19:24 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

A bit nippy, and some fresh snow to walk through, but it's going to get colder and snowier quite soon!
