Strength (Removing snow from roofs) 20:00 [3]
shoes: Hiking boots

Trying, with varying degrees of success, to clear some snow off of porch and garage roofs.

Snowshoeing 25:00 [3] 0.75 mi (33:20 / mi)
shoes: Hiking boots

Since I had my snowshoes on for the roof snow removal attempt, I decided to take Homer for a walk through the woods at the end of the street. Not much distance covered, but it was certainly a lot of work. (Distance recorded is definitely approximate.)

Did two loops around the (approx quarter mile) trail, plus a much easier quarter mile on the street, getting to the woods and back.

Snow Shoveling 30:00 [3]
shoes: Hiking boots

First Yowsa! training of the year that seemed significant enough to log ...

We get our driveway plowed, but there was still lots of shoveling needed around the car, plus our sidewalk. I did a very incomplete job, just enough (hopefully) to get the car out of the driveway (and onto our, at present, unplowed street ...) and head down to work at Bristol.

Snow Shoveling 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Hiking boots

Rough estimate of multiple snow shoveling sessions, some at Bristol (clearing paths into and around Sunset Lodge, outside the Tuning Center where I work), and one at home, digging out the street end of the driveway where there was a huge mound of snow from the town snow plow.

Running 47:12 [3] 5.52 mi (8:33 / mi) +98ft 8:25 / mi
max:140 shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

Mid-day road run. In spite of the predictions of a major storm, the roads were generally very runnable.

Ran from home, to the end of Woodland, through the woods, to Maple, to Klem, to Gravel, to Ridge, to Maple, and back home.

The shoulder of Maple was totally clear of any snow or slush. Klem wasn't bad, although there were a few places where there were some slushy areas. Ridge was probably the worst although even it wasn't all that bad.

Relatively warm (around 30 F I think) but there was a brisk wind from the west.

Downhill skiing 15:00 [3]

Went down to Bristol again, not to work this time, but mainly to take pictures of the NY state girls' GS race. I think I got some nice shots, won't know for sure until I wade through them on the computer.

After taking pictures of nearly everyone in run #1, I decided to do a few ski runs while I was down there. Got to catch some of the NY state Nordic competition in the summit area, on my rides up the lift. Bristol was certainly a very happening place today.

Walking (Dog walking) 40:00 [1] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Hiking boots

Walked around the big block with Homer.

From home, through the trail through the woods at the end of Woodland, to Heathland, Maple, Rt. 104 path, Bay Rd, Woodland, and back home.

Rt. 104 trail wasn't the greatest -- a couple of inches of slushy snow in most places. Definitely not pleasantly runnable.

Downhill skiing 15:00 [3]

A few runs at Bristol before reporting for work. Snow conditions very good, but visibility was terrible (thick fog at the summit), and it was very wet.

Running 1:00:31 [2] 6.7 mi (9:02 / mi) +295ft 8:40 / mi
max:150 shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 10

Urban run, from Park Ave near Culver.

Culver to Monroe to the road the goes up to the top of Cobb's Hill; once around the road on top, with a short side jaunt into some trails in the woods (trails were fairly hard packed and slick, so I didn't stay on the trails very long). Back down the road, then Monroe to Chestnut (?) (where Monroe essentially ends), to Court, Union, East, to just past Culver, back to Park Ave and the car.

Running 56:36 [2] 6.16 mi (9:11 / mi) +295ft 8:47 / mi
max:145 weight:175.5lbs shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Early afternoon run, mainly on roads, with Homer. Ran over to Maple, up to Klem, Klem to Hojack, Hojack to Van Alstyne, to Herman, to Drumm, Klem, Maple, and back home.

Roads in real nice shape for running; Klem especially (shoulder totally clear of snow, and dry). Hojack Trail OK, but trail shoes would have been a bit better than the road shoes I had.

Running 30:14 [3] 2.73 mi (11:04 / mi)
weight:179lbs shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

Late afternoon run at Whiting Rd trails, after driving back from Holiday Valley.

Did the perimeter trail. Trail for the most part was well packed and not particularly slick, but it was certainly harder work than with no snow.

Went with Anne and Homer. Anne was going slower, so I went at my own pace and doubled back a few times so as to not get too far removed from each other.

Downhill skiing 1:00:00 [3]

More skiing at Holiday Valley, in the morning, with Cheryl and Anne.

Snowboarding 45:00 [4]

Switched to snowboarding for the afternoon.

Downhill skiing 1:00:00 [3]

First of two ski days at Holiday Valley, with Cheryl and Anne.

Did NASTAR race, approx 6 runs down the course. Qualified for Silver, which isn't all that tough to do since their system is age-calibrated and I'm very old. First time trying to race with GS type skis, and they definitely helped, it seemed .. will need to compare my performance to when I last did NASTAR, a couple of years ago.

Walking 48:00 [1] 3.0 mi (16:00 / mi)
shoes: Hiking boots

Dog walk in Webster Park. Partly to give Homer a walk before we drop him off at the sitter's, so we can go down to Holiday Valley to ski for a few days, and partly so I could try out the new Garmin 60 GPS purchased for the club.

The park was very nice this morning. I started at the gravel parking lot off of Holt Rd near the stream, and walked trails towards the SE part of the park.

Sunday Feb 14, 2010 #

Running 24:15 [3] 2.72 mi (8:55 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

Short run on the Hojack trail with Homer. Trail is still runnable, but getting a little more bumpy and less pleasant, as it gets more tracked down.

No need for screw shoes yet, though ...

Running 55:09 [2] 6.05 mi (9:07 / mi) +164ft 8:53 / mi
max:140 weight:177.5lbs shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Early afternoon road run, with Homer. I went a bit slower than last time I ran with him, and he seemed to do a little better. From our house, ran over the Maple, Maple to Klem, to Van Alstyne, to Herman, Drumm, Vosburg, Hojack Trail to Drumm, to Klem, Maple, and back home.

Roads very bare. Hojack trail was easily runnable even in the road shoes that I wore.

Running 53:55 [2] 6.12 mi (8:49 / mi)
max:150 shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

Urban run. From Park Ave near Berkeley.

Approximate route:

Berkeley to East to Culver. Culver to Clifford, Clifford to Goodman, to East, to Berkeley, to Park, and back to car.

Nice sunny morning, fairly brisk wind from the west (right in my face as I headed west on Clifford). Sidewalks were generally snow covered, easily passable, but not real pleasant (packed down with an irregular surface). I ran in the roads whenever it seemed safe to do so.

Wednesday Feb 10, 2010 #

Downhill skiing 55:00 [3]

Skiing at Bristol with Cheryl. We figured out we did 11 runs, at an estimated 5 minutes per run. Nice day for skiing. Not too cold, not too windy, enough fresh snow to make things interesting (and a little more physical than hard packed), without so much to be intimidating.

Section 5 girls' races (GS in morning, slalom in afternoon) were happening today.

Tuesday Feb 9, 2010 #

Running 44:13 [3] 5.0 mi (8:51 / mi) +131ft 8:38 / mi
weight:178lbs shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

Mainly road run, with Homer. Over to Maple, Maple to Klem to Drumm to Hojack, Hojack to Vosburg to Adams. Adams to Backus to DeWitt. DeWitt end to end to Volk, to home.

Hojack Trail was very nicely runnable. Even surface, well packed down, but not the least bit icy.

Homer started dogging it from around 3 miles on, lagging significantly behind me and needing some encouragement. I told him that we might need to get a second dog, one that can run with me. Not sure if that encouraged him or not ...

Monday Feb 8, 2010 #

Downhill skiing 20:00 [2]

Four runs at Bristol, before reporting for work around noon. Nice conditions. Lots of people there, on account of the Section 5 GS and slalom championships being run on the lower part of Comet and the south side of lower Rocket.

Orienteering race 51:15 [3] 4.08 mi (12:34 / mi)
shoes: Screw shoes Asics Kahana 2 Mar

Mendon Ski-O, which I again did as a shoe-O.

Did the Red course, which involved getting any 13 controls of the 16 that were set out.

I thought my strategy was OK, and the execution also generally OK, although one control I missed fairly badly, after going a few hundred meters through a rough open area. I think part of the reason for the miss is that the control really didn't seem to be placed where it was shown on the map, but that's not the whole reason I'm sure.

Running 55:55 [3] 6.27 mi (8:55 / mi)
max:145 shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

Mid-day run on the canal path, with Homer. From Shoen Place; headed east, past I-490 a bit, then back. Footing generally very good; thin layer of snow most places, some bare gravel path other places. Snow wasn't packed down enough to be slick. Again, no need for screw shoes.

Wednesday Feb 3, 2010 #

Running 1:04:06 [3] 7.0 mi (9:09 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

Mid-day run on the canal, from Perinton Park to just past Marsh Rd and back. With Homer.

Footing was OK; about an inch or so of fairly soft snow. No hard-packed snow, no ice. My estimate is that the footing caused me to be about 30 sec/mile slower than my effort would have indicated.

XC skiing 46:00 [2] 3.0 mi (15:20 / mi)

Cheryl and I went down to Bristol for some XC skiing and then some downhill skiing.

I'm really not good enough at XC skiing to get any sort of reasonable workout ...

Plus I obviously need some experience in terms of how to dress. I dressed as if I were going for a run, and actually I was 99% OK (not too warm, not too cold), except for my hands which got extremely cold. I was wearing gloves that would have been fine on a run, but I'm guessing that because when skiing, I'm gripping the poles, there isn't as much circulation, so warmer gloves might be needed. Or it could just be that because of my ineptitude at XC skiing, I'm not burning enough calories to keep the hands warm.

Downhill skiing 30:00 [2]

Six runs. About 6600 vertical feet, not that much compared to a young (late teens) snowboarder who claims to have gotten in 75 runs in a day, a week or so ago.

Conditions surprisingly not that great on most slopes, but it was a very nice day. Sunny, low to mid 20's, not much wind.
