Note

Still negative for covid and showing no symptoms. But tired all the same. Legs (especially quads) got really tired this week, probably from all the walking on pavement. Decided I needed another rest day.

Note

Long travel day home. Good to hang out with Cristina for an hour or so in BHM first, then sad to say goodbye. Uneventful flight to BWI.

Leaving BWI was rough due to the storms. We sat for about an hour as they figured out a new flight path for us. We had a very bumpy ride for the first few minutes. Then we took a weird route that nearly crossed back over BHM. Got home about 2 hours later than expected but no other problems.

The World Games, Mixed Sprint Relay, Railroad Park

Personally, I was most nervous about this race since I had never organized a relay start before. And none of us saw the arena until that morning (couldn't get near the venue during duathlon earlier in the week; and Mike's crew was only able to set it up the night before). But of course, the awesome Q/S team did a fantastic job and everything went smoothly for the athletes.

It was fun to be able to see the mass start and some exchanges. And then stay around for the awards ceremony (the only one I got to see).

Relay "ah shit" and "of course" moment: I had rolled and secured all the maps by myself, which took some time the night before. This morning, when we started to put them into the table that James had built, we saw that the were too short and would be hard to grab. Crap! My first thought was trying to modify the table (there were some pieces of wood that could be unscrewed) but I wisely left the team to figure it out. I say wisely because they thought of the obvious solution that I had overlooked: they re-rolled all the maps in the long direction (as they should have been originally) and now they were long enough. My only excuse is that I thought we wouldn't have time to re-roll them all, but it took no time for 3 people to do it. And they were thinking more clearly then me at that moment LOL!

Some cool moments:
1. I had to escort the pre-runners (Yannick, Tim, Eef and another male that I was too nervous to remember) to clear/check, then back to start, give them maps and send them off. That was super cool!
2. I was able to see the first leg runners come by on their way to the control right above the quarantine check out tent. It is amazing to see their pace up close and personal: so fast!
3. I got Simona's autograph on a middle map!
4. Celebrating with the Q/S team on three good races!
5. Watching Cristina's reaction when the relay started: she had this moment of relief and release that was so well deserved!
6. watching Cristina get compliments from coaches and athletes.
7. watching Cristina smiling at the awards ceremony.
8. watching the sprint relay replay that night with Cristina while eating take out food and drinking wine (for me). What great company!

The World Games, Middle, Oak Mountain State Park

Tough day for organizers (getting stuff in and out of the woods) and the athletes (dealing with the hills and heat). The quarantine/start crew brought their A game and had another stellar day. Rolled with the punches and stayed professional all day in the heat.

Especially the start crew in the woods, who stayed calm and helped Milla Key (AUS) who made her way back to the start after 50 minutes, suffering from the heat. They called for help, then took care of her until the EMTs arrived, and helped escort her out of the woods. So proud of them!

Ask anyone of us about the abundance of Pelham Police officers at this event. It was beyond crazy. Don't think we needed an officer with an assault rifle guarding the quarantine location.

Middle "ah shit" moment: the day before, putting out the bibs in quarantine, I discovered that the packet from the printer did not contain enough bibs for the women's middle. I thought we might have to get them printed overnight, but Kris saved the day by remembering they were in the warehouse. She went and got them, so we were all set for the middle the next morning.

Some cool moments for me:
1. The athletes loved the quarantine in a museum! They found it interesting and different.
2. Eef van Dongen came to check out the start before she warmed up, and she said: "It's hard to know how to warm up when I'm already hot!" LOL

The World Games, sprint, Birmingham Southern College

Go time! Setting up and running the quarantine and start for the sprint race. Tons of minor hassles and changes, but the team handled them all. They were quiet and professional and started everyone on time with the right GPS, SIAC and map. What an awesome crew!

Cristina dealt with 10,000 "ah shit" moments every day, but I thought I would share only one of mine each day to give a glimpse behind the scenes. I hope Cristina kept a log of everything she had to deal with, it will provide stories for years to come!

Sprint "ah shit" moment: eating breakfast, talking through everything with Kris and Cristina, double checking the maps. Cristina sked me: where are the warm up maps? Ah shit! In the warehouse. Mad scramble to get out the door earlier than planned so we could drive to the warehouse first, then back to the sprint venue. Good thing it was fairly close!

Some cool moment (for me) from the sprint:
1. The TV crew changed several things in our start line to look better on TV, and they all worked to make it look fantastic and professional. Things I would never have thought of.
2. By the time I got to the finish area, the only athletes left were the winners who had waited around for doping control. I got to meet Tim and drove Simona and her coach back to UAB. What a thrill for me!
3. Seeing all the athletes up close was amazing.

hike 30:00 [1]

Lots of time on my feet today doing secret World Game stuff, as peggyd says. My legs are tired.

Kissy is my hero: she found a World Games coffee mug (maybe the last one left in Birmingham) that will be used in a secret way tomorrow. She's always awesome but this is going above and beyond!

We have a great quarantine/start crew, very conscientious and thorough. Tomorrow we finally get to put all our training and planning into action!

I drew a course on the UAB area map and did a brisk walk. It was cool to see several other orienteers also practicing on the map. We were checking out the same locations.

walk 20:00 [1]

Walking around in Birmingham, finding my way around and looking at one of the venues. Not as hot and sticky as I expected, but still a chore when pulling a suitcase.
Nice dinner with Cristina, Kris, Stefan and Matthew. I also took photos of the Brazilian O team!

Note

Heading to Birmingham tomorrow for The World Games. I am so excited. This is going to be great. Hanging with my friends, working together to put on a high quality event. And seeing and maybe meeting the orienteering elite? Priceless.
