Sprint O at Longview. I guess I expected park O, so I was pretty frustrated when we had lots of high grass and thons to penetrate. Not fun.

Also, I was thinking too much about the running, and not enough about the orienteering, so I made a silly route choice late in the course. Must remember not to do this during the Sprint Finals weekend.

Moving around on the trails at SMP. The trails are rock hard from lack of rain, so the mountain bikers were riding very fast.

Note

A fun visit with Anna and John, who stopped over on the drive east. Very encouraging to see how excited and motivated they both are about orienteering. Now I just have to convince Anna to apply to Cornell...

Day Two at the US Champs did not go as well. I was not reading the map in advance, just reacting to what I saw. And then came control 2.

It was tricky and a lot of folks missed it. I din't mind that I missed it the first time. I do mind that I wandered first, then finally relocated, three times, before I found it. I should have stopped and relocated immediately; instead I wasted 15 minutes. Still need to work on this !!!!!

At least I settled down after that, and started to read the map. The rest of the course was slow, with some stupid route choices (like taking the eastern stream to #4, instead of the western one) but no big bobbles. Still sucking wind the whole way.

At least the finish was downhill today, so I had some fun sprinting in at the end. And a first: climbing a ladder on the way to the start! Very fun and unique.
