Note

Nice day exploring some new (to us) areas of Iceland. Climbed extinct volcano craters at Bifrost and hiked in the hills above Holmavik. Beautiful countryside, and a relaxing day.

Or else I just tried to send it to Facebook. Sorry for the hassle; I'm doing all this on my phone
6 AM

orienteer race 1:31:24 intensity: (1:18 @1) + (34:56 @2) + (55:10 @3) 4.2 km (21:46 / km) +105m 19:21 / km

Well, today was even harder than yesterday. The footing was not as soft, but there were a lot more loose rocks underfoot. Cool lava features and lots of other details made for fun technical O for the first 14 controls. I was tired, so I walked pretty slowly.

From 15 to 19 was pretty crappy terrain. Had to push through dense pines, and the semi open areas were hard to identify. I lost a lot of time on 15 and 19.

Overall, I'mglad I went out ( and survived) on this technical terrain. Organization was great and I had lots of fun meeting orienteers from around the world.

We're spending 2.5 days driving around Iceland next. don't know how often we'll have internet access.

Today's map: it was much harder than it looks:)

Orienteering at Heidmork near Reykjavik. The terrain here is strange: several inches of squishy moss over small rocks. So every step was an adventure: how far will I sink, and what will be under my foot? Very tiring, like walking in sand.

I had a hard time understanding the map at first, and had big booms at 3 and 4. But after that, the map clicked and I walked with confidence ( no way are my legs strong enough to run in this terrain).

The yellow was the soft mossy stuff, white was low trees and shrubs and dark green was densely packed pines. The "marshes" were actually just mud flats, but they were distinct and quite easy to run through.

I had left my water bottle at the apartment, so I got very tired and dehydrated out there. Picked up noiticably after I visited the water stop. This was a physical and mentally challenging course, but I really enjoyed it.

Edit: notice that the magnetic north lines are slanted relative to the edges of the paper. How would an Orienteer manage to find their way on this map if they were following the OUsa logo ? :)

Nce evening relaxing at the apartment, and one last dinner at Icelandic Fish and Chips with Caroline, Jesse and Cristina.

A typical day in Reykjavik: windy and rainy. Went to the Maritime museum, which was beter than I expected

Then it was time for rhe first O race, which was a downtown sprint. They had course marshalls to stop traffic as you crossed near 7/14, which was very nice. The rest of the time was running past confused tourists. Nice course (and the rain had stopped!) There were about 90 participants tonight, from 20 countries. Very nice atmosphere.

Note

A beautiful day in Reykjavik. The first sunny day Mike and I had ever seen in Iceland. Walked around to a few museums, including the Settlement museum, which is a very cleverly designed space.

Met Cristina, Melissa, Caroline and Jesse for delicious pizza dinner. A very nice day.

Sprint course in old historic section of Nuuk. Absolutely beautiful day, sunshine and 50 degrees. The locals were walking around without coats!

Note

Finally back in the land of free wifi, so I'm catching up a bit. We're back in Reykjavik , sharing an apartment with Cristina, Melissa, Carolyn and Jesse.

5K course in Nuuk. Mix of terrain and developed areas. Hard (edit: weird and off balance) to run in the terrain, which consists of rocks and spongy grass. Was terrified to go down some steep areas. Overall OK orienteering, except for one 2 minute miss and two bad route choices.

Our accomorations were at the opposite end of town from the meet site, so we walked 30 minutes each way. Pretty hilly route and I was carrying a pack, so it gets logged.

Limited pay-by-the hour Internet so I can't say much now. Fun orienteering in Nuuk tonight followed by nice group catered dinner

No time to figure out how to post photos thru iPhone to AP, so I'll only give the link. Twitpic.com/5hvdr3

Lots of walking around Reykjavik, revisiting favorite sites and trying to stay awake. Walked for hours on hard surfaces, so my legs are tired. Figured it was log-worthy.

Visited the National Museum (where you can see lots of cool artifacts, and learn how they determined every Icelander is descending from a handful of Scandenavian males and British Isle females), the giant 3D map of Iceland in cIty hall, and the best fish and chips restaurant in the world.

A short outing at Clinton before we spend the night on airplanes. Ran right after the rain stopped, so the trail was a bit slick. Felt a bit sluggish at the start, but got better and better during the run.

Another control hunting exercise. This time I was on the main campus, and the map fragments were a little bigger than the control circle, so it was easier to find the control locations. However, it was harder to plan and execute the route, without circles on the map. Very good O training on a nice night with temps in the 80s and much less humidity.

The Dallas Cowboys are a joke for many reasons, but I discovered one more today when their swimsuit issue arrived. Seriously? Isn't it bad enough that they have cheerleaders (real football teams don't need cheerleaders), let alone parade them around in swim suits? Gimme a break.
