Day 2, US Masters, Mille Lacs Kathio Park, MN

Before the start, I decided to switch compasses because my Moscow compass was taking too long to settle. The Kanpas compass (my backup) seemed to be doing better. So, I moved my magnifier to the Kanpas and headed to the start (with the Moscow in my pack as backup).

As soon as I started, the Kanpas started swinging wildly, WTF? I decided right away to switch the magnifier back to the Moscow and use it for the race. Stupidly, I did this while I continued to move towards the first control (or so I thought). Naturally, I was very distracted, and wasn't paying attention to direction. Shit! Lost contact with the map before the first control! I wandered a bit, couldn't make sense of the marshes, and decide to head back towards the start.

After a bit things began to make sense and I finally relocated and moved to the first control. Ended up losing almost 10 minutes here, ugh!

It took me a while to settle my brain, and I made small bobble on the way to 2 and 3. But after that, everything clicked and I was checking off features as I moved.

I walked the whole time because I was tired, and I was afraid of over-running my map reading ability. I did jog downhill when I was confident of where I was, but overall today was a slower pace than yesterday.

I saw Lisa heading back to 3 as I was heading to 4.

I decided to cut through the green on the way to 5, after the error of avoiding green on Saturday. I was slow, but steady, through here. Saw Peggy punching 5 just ahead of me. She ran around the next hill, but I decided to go straight. I kept her in sight for awhile, but she quickly pulled away.

On the way to 6, I saw Kris ahead of me, and was a bit bummed because I knew she had started behind me. I kept thinking about her off and on, but did a decent job of bringing my mind back to orienteering. We were together for awhile, but took different routes to 8, and I didn't see her again until the finish. She still beat me overall for the day (and the weekend).

I got tired near the end. A small bobble on 11, then I just wandered to get to the trail to 12. I knew things weren't quite right but I kept pushing. I should have looked at my compass more. I noticed (looking at RouteGadget) that several of us made parallel errors by going slightly off compass this weekend.

I admit that I never saw the ride on the map, so I thought I had reached the trail. I took off running, but stopped when the "trail" bent in a direction I didn't expect. So I stopped and back tracked, and double checked all the marshes. I figured out that I was right the first time, doh! Back up the ride, which I thought was trail, until someone ran past me on the trail, and I figured it out. Tired brain!

I also ran on the trail to finish, and only moved over to the ride when I saw the flagging.

I was glad to have recovered from the disaster of the first control, I enjoyed the rest of the course.

What a fun weekend with good woods, maps, courses and friends. Thanks to MNOC for bringing us here.

Mike and I drove to Mason City IA and stopped for the night.
