Zitzmannsdorfer Wiesen - Nussdorf. 9:15 - 23:45.
Woke up briefly around 5 to see a beautiful morning, fog over the lake and all around me, with the red glow of the sunrise in the background. Kept waking up and falling back asleep until eventually getting up around 8. Chilly morning despite the sun, wearing my sweater, rain jacket and hat.
Plan was to circle the lake and then head back, perhaps taking the train at some point. Headwind for the first part, but i knew it would give me tailwind later so i didn't care. Lots of other cyclists about, all at least twice as old as me ;)
Couldn't pass up on the opportunity to cycle past the lowest point in Austria, and from there into Hungary on some gravel and grass roads, where i didn't meet anyone anymore.
Back on the paved road it had gotten warm and i pushed a bit harder to Sopron, where i arrived at 4pm and had my second coffee, before deciding to push on all the way back to Vienna.
Surprisingly nice route afterwards, from the map the southern part of the Vienna Basin looks boringly flat, straight and agricultural, but especially the beginning was lovely rolling terrain, and i managed to find some enjoyable small paved roads and rideable gravel roads. Another nice detail was ticking off all the small rivers flowing from the prealps on the way up; Wulka, Leitha (stopped for a brief dip), Fischa, Piesting and Schwechat.
Pizza in Schwechat at 10.30pm, and then a quiet, dark Donauinsel brought me home just before midnight. Nice trip, felt very strong today. Always good to be on the bike slowly moving through the landscape like that :)
