up in the middle of the night; hard to get back to sleep with various junior O worries... in the dreams that followed, I didn't get much appreciation from the company lawyers for my ideas...

Had a great meeting this morning with the founder of CycleKids, who was turned onto orienteering by Mary Jo, and thinks it would be great to use her model for getting it into schools. She has labored for 9 years now to get CycleKids to where it is: a mandatory 4th-grade bicycle education program in PE for all kids in Cambridge and Somerville, and about to expand nationally. Did you know that about a quarter of kids these days don't learn how to ride a bike?! Different than the old days. Her model is to provide curricula and materials (book) for schools, and not to actually teach the classes herself. Interestingly, I do have an offer from a teacher I worked with, now retired, to help me develop such a curriculum for orienteering.

The CycleKids founder has recruited the #4 woman cyclist in the world, Evelyn somebody, to help with the program, including introducing her to sponsors. She (the founder) also knows a lot about measurement of effectiveness, and grant writing, and all sorts of useful things. She said it was a long hard road, and she probably wouldn't have done it if she knew then what she knows now about how hard it is. But she's in a good place now. She's able to synergize with the organization that is working on safe routes to schools, which has been done in about 400 communities, I think she said. Or 4000.

I talked about the various models for orienteering that are in the air. Hers: provide curricula. Then there is ARK - afterschool program, linked to orienteering club. And there is the work I do in schools, directly providing the activities. And there is the national Junior Development Program, run by clubs. And the possible links of local kids to follow their heros on the Junior Standing Team.

I also told her about my idea to do Minecraft orienteering and then give the winners a grand prize of a trip to Boston to compete in the real life version on June 2nd.
