Orienteering race (WMOC Long final) 1:08:01 [5] *** 6.74 km (10:05 / km) +341m 8:03 / km
spiked:12/18c shoes: Inov8 Oroc 350

M55 B final: probably my worst run of the week, with big misses on 4 controls and smaller ones on at least 2 others. Terrain was very different to qualifiers with prostrate conifers, blueberry, steep side slopes and lots of rock making running at any pace difficult. Can't blame any of those for my performance however, just didn't read it at all.

Deb was 5th last starter in W55 A final and had a good race apart from 2 controls, losing probably 6-7 minutes. She still finished an excellent 24th to cap an outstanding week.

We are now in Alessandria ready to start a 7 day cycle tour through the Piedmont region.

Orienteering race (WMOC Long qual 2) 1:03:29 [5] **** 6.87 km (9:15 / km) +217m 7:59 / km
spiked:16/18c shoes: Inov8 Oroc 350

A better effort today. I knew I had no chance of making the A final so was looking for a clean run and almost achieved that. Was reading the map well and, apart from a small hesitation on 4, was hitting the controls well. Then on 13 I had a brain snap despite planning the route well. I got to within probably 20 metres of the flag then wandered off into the forest when it was obvious the site was in open land. Lost about 4 minutes. OK after that apart from a poor (and slow) route to 16. After that we ran underneath the Olympic Luge and Bobsled course to the finish.

Deb again did brilliantly, placing 5th in her heat for 3rd place overall and a top 10 start in the A final on Saturday.

Garmin has miraculously recovered!!

Orienteering race (WMOC Long qual 1) 1:08:26 [5] **** 5.6 km (12:13 / km) +290m 9:42 / km
spiked:15/20c shoes: Inov8 Oroc 350

Another disappointing return. There was a very steep climb to the start and I didn't leave myself enough time to recover before the race, so started poorly, messing up both 1 and 2 to the extent of about 4 minutes total. Smooth if not fast 3 through to 12 although the fog coming down around 7 and 8 made maintaining contact difficult. Poor route to 13 meant I lost contact and had to relocate, losing another 4-5 minutes. OK for the rest.

Course was more middle than long, with 20 controls and little route choice but enjoyed it once the early climb was out of the way.

Will need a miracle in the 2nd qualifier to make the A final so will just concentrate on having a clean run.

Another great run by Deb saw her 2nd in her heat, just 30 seconds off 1st! She just needs a steady run to get through and should do it with ease.

Orienteering (WMOC Long Qual model) 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 350

Spent an hour jogging/walking around the long qualifier model map with Deb. Very steep terrain, a mix of open and forest with a number of watercourses, rock outcrops and some tracks. Mapping seemed a little mixed, perhaps a consequence of having several mappers?

Orienteering race (WMOC Sprint B final) 20:38 [5] *** 2.3 km (8:58 / km) +60m 7:56 / km
spiked:11/12c shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 14 white/gold

Sprint B final at Sestriere. A better run than yesterday but still managed one dumb map reading error at #3 - had better improve for the Long. Most of my climb was in one leg: 10 contours straight up. Placed 16th so reasonable happy.

Deb starred with another great run placing 12th in the A Final. She keeps getting better and better!

Garmin situation looks terminal - sorry Trent:-(

Running race (WMOC Sprint qualifier) 17:35 [5] ** 2.85 km (6:10 / km) +35m 5:49 / km
spiked:12/16c shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 14 white/gold

Poor effort today on what was a very straightforward (aka easy) course. Slow start and then overshot 3 and 6, losing about a minute combined. Then totally messed up 9 by not reading my map and lost another 2 minutes and any chance of the A final. Last 4 controls were all out in the open and visible from previous control, so that was disappointing! Garmin failed when I went to upload:-(

Deb ran a blinder for 6th place in her heat and is 15th last starter in the A final!
