Orienteering race (Australian Long Champs) 1:00:09 [5] **** 6.9 km (8:43 / km) +245m 7:24 / km
spiked:15/17c shoes: Inov8 Oroc 350

Australian Long champs at Badja. Good start through to 3 but missed 4 going up the wrong gully, probably losing about 2 minutes. Very happy with the middle of the course, with navigation and pace both good. Brain snap coming out of 15, reading the description for 16 but navigating to 17! Realised when I hit the fence near the Sprint start and then compounded the error by running back into the bush, not seeing the option to run around the open and up a gully to the control. Lost 4+ minutes here and 2 places. Ended up 7th. Garmin distance was 8.75km.

Orienteering race (Oceania Sprint) 20:45 [5] **** 1.8 km (11:32 / km) +60m 9:53 / km
spiked:12/16c shoes: Inov8 Oroc 350

Bush sprint race at Badja. Awful start, no plan running to 1 and went right past it. Ended up taking 5 minutes so was out of the reckoning straight away. Better 2, 3 and 4 then dumb route to 5, back into the green when the control was on the edge of a clear area! Rest were OK but well off the pace.

Orienteering 2:30:00 [3]
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 350

Collecting controls after completion of Relays. Worked pretty hard to about 20 controls plus water containers, cups and rubbish in (had lots of help as there were more than 80 controls to bring in) but was still in the forest at 6:30pm.

General feedback from the 2 days has been very positive. There were no significant technical issues (at least that I am aware of) and most people seemed to enjoy their courses. Weather for both days was great but we were lucky as it rained quite heavily in the area on Wednesday night!

Really pleased with this run. Having run here about 3 years ago and stuffed it big time, I was determined to do better. My plan was to go straight on just about every leg given there was little climb. Took it very steady to number one to try and get into the map. Picked up the pace a little but kept to my plan through to 8 then was faced with multiple route choices on the "long" leg to 9. Stuck with my plan and, although a little slow compared to some others, hit the ocntrol. At that stage I was caught by GrantM and we both caught Michael Burton. The 3 of us ran pretty much together through to the end but I had to lift my pace to stay with these 2 speedsters. Grant was on a flyer but unfortunately found he had missed 4. I ended up 3rd overall, quite a way behind Rob V but only 1 minute off 2nd so a very pleasing effort.
