Good warm up for 3rd day straight!

Orienteering race (QBIII Day 3 (Middle)) 1:00:34 [5] **** 4.5 km (13:28 / km) +160m 11:26 / km
spiked:14/18c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 270

An excellent course in a great area. Map reading was generally good through to 6, with just a few minor issues at 3 (left) and 4 (high). Short leg from 6 to 7 brought me unstuck as I lost map contact. Lost about 8 minutes here and so ended any chance of sneaking in to 3rd place (or so I thought)!

Also a bit high at 8 but then decided to start reading the map again and was pretty happy with the second half of the course. Daniel Orr (M21AS and same course) caught me at 7 and we swapped he lead for much of the remainder until his younger legs took him away on the last couple.

Got back to find I had somehow snared 3rd overall but only through attrition, with Darvo not running and others fairing worse than I did! Mind you, I was about 15 minutes behind 2nd!

Orienteering race (QBIII Day 2 (Long)) 1:10:36 [5] **** 6.0 km (11:46 / km) +230m 9:52 / km
spiked:9/12c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 270

When I turned the map over today, I thought "you beaut, this is the area I used when I set Day 2 at Easter 2008!" That was my first mistake. Super confident (read cocky!) I headed off to #1 and actually did pretty well until I reached the circle where I stopped reading the map and wasted about 3 minutes.

2 to 4 were fine, then came the long leg to 5! I left 4 too far left (Darvo, who was behind me, must have been wondering where I was headed!) but once I got going I decided it wasn't actually a bad route choice: through the cleared paddocks and then climb up the gully into the saddle and down to the control. All good until I drifted into the wrong gully on the climb and ended up near 6. Compounded the error by going further right around the hill between 5 and 6. Even seeing StK66 almost punching 6 didn't wake me up!

Opted for safety on the long run to 7 but fell foul of not reading the map again and got into a parallel gully before snapping out of my daze and ran hard to 7. Finally got my act together over the last 5 controls with no errors, mainly because I read the map!

Started the day in 5th, 1 second ahead of James in 6th but he had a worse day than me so I stayed 5th, but more than 13 minutes down on GrantM.
