Final bush event on our calendar, at Willan's Hill. Nav not difficult - missed 5 by about 15m - but physically hard with over 230m climb, most of it steep! Happy enough with the run especially after our "late" 60th birthday bash last night:-) Forgot to start my Garmin until the 1st control so added some distance and time.

Pilates 1:00:00 [4]

First formal Pilates class at Workout with Deb (and my first Pilates of any sort for about 4 years!). Was a bit difficult to keep up at first but got the hang of it (and the instructor was very helpful!). Some nice stretches that will hopefully help us both. Plan is to make it a regular Friday activity.

Running race (Hume & Hovell 22km) 2:42:22 [5] 22.26 km (7:18 / km) +696m 6:19 / km
ahr:167 max:204 shoes: Mizuno Wave Kazan trail

2nd attempt at this race after cramping badly in the last 3km last year. Ran conservatively for the 6km along the fire trail, saving energy for the climbs. Ran all the way up the open field to the base of Mt Garland with dry ground this year making is so much easier!

Walked the first 500m of the steep climb up Mt Garland then alternated between running and walking as the climb varied. Hit the 9km checkpoint to loud music and a Happy Birthday sign (turned 60 today!) from Izzi! Took on some gatorade, fruit cake and lollies. Next 4km were a mix of run and walk, passing some other runners before I got to the big downhill to Tumbarumba Creek. Bernadette and another lady raced past me on the downhill as I was again conservative and they were soon out of sight. Got to the swing bridge at the bottom and was surprised to see them both plus Sarah.

Got past the other lady and the remaining 3 of us stayed pretty much together up the tough climb along Burra Creek. After a couple of k's, Bern had a tumble but was OK and we kept going until she stopped to talk to her husband Stephen coming the other way (he was sweeping the 50km run). Sarah and I stayed together but she eventually let me past and I pulled clear until I got to the road crossing where I got lost last year and I was confused again! Sarah soon arrived and pointed out the right route and I quickly got away again.

Ran the last 2km conservatively, still wary of cramping but the Shotz in the racepack did the job. Slowed also by a sore right Achilles but had no real problems and finished more than 17 minutes faster than last year. Deb, in her first ever half mara, ran a brilliant time of just under 3 hours whilst Briohny had an outstanding run in a big field to place 2nd female behind the speedy Shannon Jones in 2:26, 9 minutes faster than last year.

Really happy with the new Garmin 235 however I think the HRM is way off as I don't think there is any way I averaged 167 and maxed at 204, especially since my pacemaker has a hardwired upper limit of 145!!!

Helped Deb with control collection after the event today.

Covered over 17 km with about 400m climb across the 3 activities today, so a good hit out ahead of the Hume and Hovell 22 km race next Saturday.

Orienteering race (Australian Relays) 45:06 [5] **** 6.19 km (7:17 / km) +95m 6:46 / km
ahr:148 max:170 spiked:12/15c shoes: Mizuno Wave Kazan trail

Australian Relays at Hill end in a NSW M60 team with Geoff Todkill and Mel Cox. Geoff was 1st runner and came back hot on the heals of Rod Vincent in the NSW 1 team, Mel kept us in 2nd holding off Vic's Ted van G. I started well but poor route choice at 6 and 7 saw Geoff Lawford put the Vic's in front of me. I then saw NSW 1's Tony Woolford just ahead of me at the spectator control and realised I was still running for 2nd place. I made a real mess of 12 so thought all was lost however Tony made a major error is the last loop and I came home in 2nd place. Scrappy run but happy with final outcome.
