Orienteering race 1:21:45 [5] ***** 4.5 km (18:10 / km)
spiked:16/20c shoes: UK Gear PT03 trail

Deb, Briohny and I went down to Yackandandah for the AWOC Club Champs on a new map. 81 minutes on a 4.5km course sounds really slow but this was tough (and I either finished first or second depending on what time Hugh Moore ran - yep, he made the long trip too, as did another Canberrian, Michael Burt).

The map was a 1:5000 (thank goodness) and had no contours! Total relief across the whole area however is probably only 15-20 metres and there was so much detail - watercourses, gullies, old mining, thick green veg and tracks, tracks and more tracks (the area is used extensively for MTB and they have built so pretty interesting bridges and other crossing points, including a see-saw!) Will try and post it later.

I made a couple of significant errors, like finding #17 before #1, going to #2 twice - deilberately so I could actually find #3 and then hitting the fence beyond #11. The rest were pretty good A very interesting and enjoyable event.

(rest day)

Highlight of the day was receving my Hawks 2008 Premiers memorabilia in the mail. New shirt, hat, stubby holder and prerequisite bumper sticker!

Orienteering 29:07 [5] *** 4.5 km (6:28 / km)
shoes: UK Gear PT03 trail

Orienteering training at Pomingalarna with Briohny and Deb. I set two short (armchair, so no controls) courses with plenty of short legs and direction changes. Pommy is always a challenge as the tracks change so regularly and the map is a bit dated so forced to really concentrate on contours.

First loop (2.4km, 16:33): a couple of small errors, overran #1 and then too low on #6. Briohny beat me by almost 2 minutes.

Second loop (2.1km, 12.34) much better navigation with no real errors. Beat Briohny by a few seconds. Saw a massive Goanna near #2!

Running 30:40 [3] 6.0 km (5:07 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Short afternoon run down to the Lake, past the Golf Club and back home. Good to stretch the legs after sitting in the car (to and from Albury) or meetings all day!

Running race 38:32 [5] 8.0 km (4:49 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Cumulus 9

Road Runners at Wiradjuri Reserve. This is a nice run along the river but it was too hot today, hitting 30C when we were running. Pushed too hard in the first half and really had to hang on to get home. Happy with the time but might try and go out a bit slower next week, especially if it is hot again.

Running 26:19 [3] 5.4 km (4:52 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Afternoon lap of the lake with Briohny (Deb did a 4km out and back). Borrowed Briohny's Garmin 405 to see how it worked. After about 15 minutes had a look and we were racing along at 4:30k's which was a bit too quick for me so slowed it a bit. Felt pretty tight in Achilles and quads but enjoyed the run.

Note
(rest day)

Down and back trip to Sydney (6:30am to 8:30pm) left no time for a run. My birthday anyway so reckon I deserved a day off :-)

Monday Oct 13, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Probably needed a recovery run but a long day at work plus O club meeting left little time so no go!

Running race 1:43:36 [5] 21.1 km (4:55 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Melbourne Half Mararthon. Pretty happy with the result given the interupted preparation. About 30 seconds faster than Canberra last year so I guess thatis a PB :-) Achilles held up OK during the run but was pretty saw afterwards. Kept ahead of the 1:40 and 1:45 pace makers until the 19km mark when both passed me but I managed to get back ahead of the 1:45. They seemed a bit confused themselves as the 1:45 guy was ahead of the 1:40 for most of the race!

Massive field (7700+) so a bit slow at the start but conditions were great - cool and overcast for most of the run. A real buzz finishing on the MCG!!

Running 30:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Steady run to see how the Achilles responded. Felt a bit tight but got through within incident. Iced it afterwards and will hopefully pull up OK tomorrow and will be right for Sunday.

Thursday Oct 9, 2008 #

Note
(injured)

Walked for an hour or so after work in Albury. Achilles felt pretty good.

Exercise bike 30:00 [3]
(injured)

Achilles not too bad - wore an ankle support all day at work - so did a steady session on the bike. Pulled up OK but still iced the achilles. Will rest tomorrow again and maybe try a run on Friday.

Tuesday Oct 7, 2008 #

Note
(injured)

Rest Day: all was going well until right achilles suddenly started to ache at around lunchtime and continued for the rest of the day. Not really sure what happened as it felt good during yesterday's run. Might hop on the exercise bike tomorrow and see how it goes. Hope it comes good as Melbourne Half is Sunday!

Running 1:10:10 [3] 13.5 km (5:12 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Last long run ahead of Melbourne Half this Sunday. Ran from work down to the river and picked up the cycle track along the levy then along Kooringal Rd, around Lake Albrt and home via the Boat Club. Felt pretty comfortably the whole way, the only hassle was a very gusty head wind for almost the whole trip south.

Note

Logged 7 days straight then nothing for the next 4 days!

5 hours mapping today so at least out in the terrain.

Running 49:45 [3] 9.1 km (5:28 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Cumulus 9

Another afternoon run in Sydney. Planned it on Google Earth and that doesn't show contours:-) This was quite a bit hillier (is that a word?) than I thought so pretty slow for the distance.

7 days straight of running is a first in Australia for me I think - did it in Czech earlier this year. That's all for a few days however as won't have another chance probably until Saturday.
