Running 35:20 [3] 6.4 km (5:31 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 10

After leaving Briohny and Deb, I ran from the Botanic Gardens to home via the spine of Willan's Hill and then a bit further on the ridge above Tatton. Enjoyed the run and felt really strong to the extent of running up all the steep hills with seemingly no effort at all. Maybe a couple of days rest did me some good:)

Running warm up/down 10:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 10

10 minute warm up in Botanic Gardens with Briohny (and Deb) whilst Briohny did her 1 minute run, 1 minute walk exercises.
11 PM

Note

Probably won't be logging for the next two weeks as Deb and I head to China tomorrow and not sure of the opportunities for both exercise and/or internet access.

Wednesday Apr 28, 2010 #

Note

Sydney all day: had time for exercise but no motivation I'm afraid!

Tuesday Apr 27, 2010 #

Note

Did Job Interviews in the morning and then drove to Sydney in the afternoon.

Running 52:25 [3] 10.0 km (5:15 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

A steady morning run from home to the Boat Club then full lap of the Lake and back home. Quads a bit tight after yesterday's hilly run and right hammy seems to be causing some grief again. Better get back into the stretches and strengthening. Really nice morning after yesterday's good rain (33mm at our place!), a bit breezy and a lot cooler than recently.

Running race (Road Runners) 41:20 [5] 8.0 km (5:10 / km) +150m 4:43 / km
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 10

Road Runners on a wet, slippery and hilly Pomingalarna course! Nice and cool for running but track was very slippery in places - should have worn the Inov8s!

As it is the last run for the month, this was handicap day and, as I hadn't run previously this month, I went our quite early and ran the whole course by myself, except the last km where I caught some of the short course runners. Happy overall with the run given the amount of climb and that there was no one around me to help me judge my pace. Some hamstring twinges, especially on the climb, so was taking it a bit careful.

Cycling 42:50 [4] 14.0 km (3:04 / km)

Afternoon cycle. Went out around the north and east sides of the Lake into Rawlings Park then up to Mitchell Rd. A bit of a loop in Rawlings and then home via the Boat Club. Good fun ride except for the millions of tiny flying insects that I tried not to inhale. Glad I had glasses on. Almost dark by the time I got home. Probably should get some lights - might find some next month in China!

Running 38:40 [3] 7.8 km (4:57 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Afternoon run around Lake Albert. Same loop as last Friday and pleased with a much faster effort. Brilliant afternoon, lots of people out: walking, running, cycling, water skiing (even though it was almost dusk) or just sitting around enjoying it all. The Lake really is a great asset when it has water in it!. Let's hope it stays that way.

Orienteering race 52:00 [5] **** 5.4 km (9:38 / km) +180m 8:15 / km
spiked:8/9c shoes: Helly Hansen Trailcutter

First Interclub against AWOC at Connorton. Nice course set by Deb (and I'm not just saying that!). Long first leg and a little vague in the circle. 2, 3 and 4 good - managed to avoid most of the hundreds of Golden Orb spider webs, 2 was a ripper with webs on all 4 sides and I was first there! Missed 5 to the west and slightly high but only lost 30 seconds. Good for the remainder but didn't enjoy the climb from 6 to 7!

Another brilliant autumn morning and conquered the grass seeds today by wearing shorts and sock guards, and putting strapping tape over the laces on my shoes!

Orienteering 2:00:00 [3] ****
shoes: Helly Hansen Trailcutter

Helped Deb put out controls and tapes for tomorrow's club event at Connorton. I only did the Green and Orange so I can run tomorrow. Not a lot of fast running! Best aspect: a brilliant Autumn morning; worse aspect: the grass seeds in socks and shoes!!!

Note

Golf: 4 ball at the Country Club. I was pretty much a non-contributor on the front 9, getting on the card just once as my partner carried me to 22 points! Back nine I did much better, scoring on all but 1 hole but we only managed 19 points for a total of 41, with the winners on 50. Magnificent day to be out on the course despite the poor effort.

Running 39:45 [3] 7.8 km (5:06 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Finally time for a run! Enjoyable afternoon plod (to steal Briohny's term) around the Lake from home and back along Lansdown. Great conditions, cool, no wind and lots of water in the Lake, and lots of people out and about, walking, running, cycling, water skiing!

Wednesday Apr 14, 2010 #

Note

To Sydney on morning flight and home on the evening flight - long day!

Tuesday Apr 13, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Had planned to go for a ride this afternoon but had a few holdups and things to do at home so didn't happen!

Monday Apr 12, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Out of town so could only manage a 5 km walk after work.

Orienteering race (ACT Long Champs) 1:20:56 [5] **** 8.0 km (10:07 / km) +260m 8:42 / km
spiked:12/15c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 270

A great start through to 3 had me in the lead by over 2 minutes on GrantM, the eventual winner, but then my now usual stuff-ups occurred, this time in a big way. Lost map contact on the way to 4 and ended up about 10 contours too low. Eventually relocated but the extra climb hurt. Started well towards 5 hitting an attack point about halfway but then stopped short and got badly mixed up with gullies and rock everywhere. Finally relocated off a watercourse but the combined time loss for these 2 legs was around 15 minutes - ouch! Rest was generally good apart from a slight wobble at 10 but the extra climb and running took its toll.

Probably my worse result in some time but all credit to the winners especially GrantM who, as I predicted some months back, is proving very tough to beat this year.

Orienteering race (ACT Middle Distance) 45:15 [5] **** 4.4 km (10:17 / km) +190m 8:27 / km
spiked:16/18c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 270

An improvement on yesterday but still managed 2 brain snaps during an otherwise good run, both probably cost me around 2 minutes. Hung on for 3rd place. I was happy with the way I navigated at speed through the middle of the course. I had caught Geoff T and GrantM had caught me but I still managed to run my own race until my stuff-up at 12 when they both got away on me.

Event: Snow Treble

2 PM

Orienteering race (ACT Sprint Champs) 23:08 [5] * 2.5 km (9:15 / km)
spiked:9/13c shoes: Helly Hansen Trailcutter

A pretty poor effort overall and surprised I finished as high as I did in 4th. Stupid errors at 2, 3, 6 and 11, all due to not reading the map. Good area and courses. Garmin distance was 3.3km, so I ran an extra 800m mainly through errors!

Wednesday Apr 7, 2010 #

5 PM

Running 31:20 [3] 6.0 km (5:13 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Short afternoon run to try and loosen the legs up a bit. Down to the Boat Club and then along the Lake from past the Golf course and down to O'Halloran Park and back home. Started out quite cool but was very humid and I was dripping with sweat by the time I got home.

Orienteering race (Easter Day 3) 1:02:53 [5] **** 5.9 km (10:39 / km) +185m 9:13 / km
spiked:19/22c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 270

Left my worse run until last! Obvious track route to 1 but wasn't paying enough attention to the map and went past it by about 100m, losing probably 2 minutes. More problems at 5 where I ran too far west, almost to another flag. Only stopped and relocated when I saw there was water at that control. Still had trouble in the circle, again from not reading the map closely enough to see the boulder was at the southern end of the feature. Slow to get down the rockface to 6 and a little wayward on my route into 10.

After that I started to read the map a bit better but tightness (again) in my right hammy slowed me down a bit, especially up the hills. Major stack on the rocky ground between 18 and 19 resulted in a lot of blood from a cut on my elbow (thanks to Hilary for stopping to see if I was OK). Briohny wasn't too impressed when I handed her my bloodied compass and SI at the finish:-). St John soon patched me up.

Quite disappointed with my fine navigation today. Need to concentrate harder and read the map detail. 11th place today and 7th overall, one place lower than last year, so not too happy! Garmin distance 7.15km.

Orienteering race (Easter Day 2) 50:42 [5] *** 6.5 km (7:48 / km) +200m 6:46 / km
spiked:17/17c shoes: Helly Hansen Trailcutter

Probably as well as I have run since Day 2 at Easter last year! No real errors on the whole couse, just a slight hesitation coming in to 6 where the vegetation boundary didn't seem to fit. Trusted myself (for a change) and when straight in to the control. Not sure I had the best route choice to 10 as the left route may have had less climb. Otherwise all good. All that held me back was my lack of speed compared to the first 3 guys who all ran very well. 4th fastest on the day and remained 6th overall. Garmin distance was 7.1km.

Orienteering race (Easter Day 1) 1:07:49 [5] **** 5.8 km (11:42 / km) +245m 9:39 / km
spiked:19/22c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 270

Gudgenby Homestead map: technical granite, scrubby green and some fast open. A tough, technical but very good course. A steady start then overshot 2 (up the hill!) probably cost me 2 minutes. I thought I had the right route choice on 5-6 by going back down the powerline but got badly caught up in the green. Should probably have gone right out to the road. Seems right and through the saddle was probably quicker anyway, so lost maybe 3-4 minutes here. The rest were good except for a slight error (20 seconds) on 15. 6th place. Garmin distance was 6.9km.

Orienteering race (Easter Family race (long)) 23:00 [5] * 3.5 km (6:34 / km)
spiked:23/25c shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Great location and course. A slow start (forgot to punch start control!) then gradually picked up my pace. Very happy with nav through to 12 where I became a little confused in the buildings and probably lost 30 seconds. Good again until 21 where a poor route choice cost me another 20 seconds. Overall happy and really enjoyed the event.
