Running 33:55 [3] 6.4 km (5:18 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 10

Latish afternoon run after returning from Narrandera. To Boat Club then along the near side of the Lake past Golf Club and on to OHalloran Park and home via Kimberley and Fitzroy. Took it pretty slow as Achilles is still sore but need to do a bit to keep some fitness level.

Running 40:40 [3] 7.6 km (5:21 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Afternoon part-lap of the Lake, out via the Boat Club, home through O'Halloran Park. Cold starting out but soon warmed up OK. Fairly slow effort today, just trying to ease the achilles along. Lots of people out and about despite the cold weather.

Clearly some idiots about as well. Two of the beautiful 2-metre high gum trees Council (in a rare flash of good sense) planted last year have been willfully snapped off at the base by a person or persons unknown. Also evidence that some clever individual has been doing donuts in the recently-scraped dry lake bed. Pity they didn't get bogged after the rain!

Note

Mapping for a couple of hours but it started to rain. This will likely mean I will miss next weekend's NSW SL events to catch up on mapping.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [2] ****
shoes: Asics Gel Trabuca trail

Too wet to continue mapping so did some control checking and tagging for Middle Dist courses. Very windy and cold with sleet at times and it is only April!

Running 52:00 [3] 9.7 km (5:22 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Ran home from Roadies at Pommingalarna with Briohny, after she had run the monthly handicap. I was again on drinks duty so didn't run. Started to rain after about 10 minutes and was steady all the way home so pretty wet by the time we got here. Nice easy pace as this was my first run in almost a week, resting due to achilles problems. Pulled up OK but still some soreness so will continue to take it easy.

Had plannned on some gardening, planting out our new native garden beds out front but the continual rain put paid to that, so "forced" to watch Hawks beat the Eagles:)

Cycling 39:35 [3] 12.5 km (3:10 / km)

On the bike for the first time in several months - took a bit of getting ready (the bike that is!). Out around the Lake and through Rawlings Pk to Mitchell Rd then back into Rawling via Silverwood and back out to the Lake track and home through O'Halloran's Pk.

Enjoyed the ride although right knee started to object to the different form of exercise after a while.

Note
(injured)

Achilles playing up so have decided to take a week's break from running to see if it comes good. Might get on the bike later in the week but in Sydney this afternoon and Tuesday.

Orienteering race 1:00:57 [5] *** 6.2 km (9:50 / km)
spiked:6/9c shoes: Helly Hansen Trailcutter

First Waggaroos-AWOC Interclub at Wolfram. Nice course set by Deb but, after a good start, managed to make a mess of a couple. Nothing major, just a minute or two here and there, mainly poor route choice and not reading the map in the spur-gully.

Orienteering warm up/down 15 [3]
shoes: Helly Hansen Trailcutter

Minimal warmup with Briohny. Warm down was more defined: had to drive Briohny's car back out over the rough tracks - she was a bit worried about damaging her new car after the drive in! I got her most of the way out and then ran (walked the steep hill) back to the assembly area, about 1.5km

Orienteering 1:30:00 [3]

Helped Deb with collecting controls after the event finished. Very weary by the end.

Note

Mapping - another snake encounter (Brown this time) - when are they going to hibernate?? Probably just after I finish mapping (hopefully) next month! Good day otherwise, covering a lot of ground.

Running 36:40 [3] 7.5 km (4:53 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Afternoon run out to BBQ shed at Lake Albert via Boat Club and return. Felt surprisingly good on first run since Easter and having spent all day sitting down in a meeting. Pushed quite hard particularly on the way home as seemed to have plenty of energy. Only concern is return of right achilles soreness - didn't trouble me in Tassie - so will have to work harder on the stretches.

Note
(rest day)

Drive home to Wagga after overnight Ferry trip Devonport to Melbourne. Ferry ride was was pretty standard, a few more bumps than coming over but finish was interesting. Ferry arrived about 10 minutes early at Port Melbourne and then spent an hour trying to dock! Westerly winds were so strong, the ship kept getting blown away from the dock. After 3 attempts they called in the tug boats and they brought us in safely!

Tuesday Apr 14, 2009 #

Note
(rest day)

Morning walk (about 4kms all up) at the Tamar River Wetlands with Deb and Briohny.

Orienteering race 46:44 [5] *** 5.5 km (8:30 / km) +140m 7:32 / km
spiked:10/13c shoes: Helly Hansen Trailcutter

Easter 2009 Day 3: a slightly disappointing effort after yesterday. Small errors on 4 and 8 plus and a slightly larger mistake on 5 totalled about 3 minutes. Again struggled up the climbs but pushed hard on the downhills. 5th again today to maintain 6th place overall. Take away the 8 minutes from Day 1 and I am comfortably in 4th but that's without knowing what errors others have made:)

Clearly need to work on my strength up hills as this is where I am loosing time to the top competitors.

For the 3rd day straight, a basic course, a simple loop with limited route choice. Somewhat disappointing when I looked at the M55, W50 and W21E courses (other too?), which all had crossovers into the tin mining and more complex decision-making.

Orienteering warm up/down 10:00 [3]
shoes: Helly Hansen Trailcutter

On the way to the start, no warm down!

Orienteering race 58:49 [5] **** 6.4 km (9:11 / km) +240m 7:44 / km
spiked:11/12c shoes: Helly Hansen Trailcutter

Easter 2009 Day 2: a much better effort than yesterday; an almost clean run with just a small hesitation at #2 that probably cost me 30 seconds. Attacked the course where I could (flats and downhills!) but not strong enough on the climb to compete with the front runners. Happy with 5th place today and that lifted me to 6th overall.

Again the course was OK without a lot of imagination, again being a simple loop with little or no route choice.

Orienteering warm up/down 10:00 [3]
shoes: Helly Hansen Trailcutter

On the way to the Start and then back to the car after the race to collect camera!

Orienteering race 53:32 [5] *** 4.9 km (10:56 / km) +180m 9:14 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: Helly Hansen Trailcutter

Easter 2009 Day 1: My hopes from yesterday of no more mistakes were dashed with a massive (and stupid) 8 minute error on #4. Took what looked like a safe route choice with a big catching feature but somehow it didn't catch me, missing well to the west! Eventually relocated off a track but the damage was done. Only one other small error on the rest of the course but wasted a lot of energy on 4 and was very tired by the end. 12th place after the first day wasn't the start I wanted!

Interesting area with the eucalypt plantations and lots of marshes. Course was OK, just a simple loop without a lot of imagination.

Orienteering warm up/down 10:00 [3]
shoes: Helly Hansen Trailcutter

Warm up the way to the Start and cool down from Finish back to the car. 10 minutes might be stretching it!

Friday Apr 10, 2009 #

Orienteering race 29:17 [5] *** 3.8 km (7:42 / km)
spiked:12/18c shoes: Helly Hansen Trailcutter

Easter 2009: Family Relays with Deb and Briohny. Deb ran 1st leg and had a clean run. I went out 2nd but I managed to stuff up an Orange course big time on 4 controls with minor errors on 2 others! Very disappointing effort and let the team down:( Briohny ran the 3rd leg on the Blue course and recorded the fastest time for the day!

I was hoping that this would be the end of my mistakes for the weekend!

Tuesday Apr 7, 2009 #

Running 40:40 [3] 8.2 km (4:58 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Afternoon run out along Plumpton Rd to Rowan Rd and back. Sounds a bit boring but not too bad as you pretty much get out of town and run on a track beside the road. Achilles a bit sore at the start (probably from sitting down all day at work) but OK once I warmed up a bit.

Monday Apr 6, 2009 #

Note
(rest day)

Visit to the Podiatrist to get my dodgy big toes looked at. Took one look at my runners toes (black nails on 2nd toes) and reckons my shoes are probably a bit small and that has contributed to the big toe issues. I already wear 11.5's!!

Some suggestions on management and also looked at my gait and seems I pronate from the outside edge to a flat foot so is recommending orthotics and a more stable shoe (I have been wearing straight cushioned shoes, thus the Gel Nimbus). Will see how it all goes but not until after Easter.

Sunday Apr 5, 2009 #

Note

Mapping, somewhat handicapped by forgetting my glasses! So didn't do any rock detail today, just worked on tracks and vegetation. Actually covered a lot of ground. Amazing what a little rain (well actually, quite a lot!) makes to the forest.

Running 52:00 [3] 9.7 km (5:22 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Ran home with Briohny after Road Runners at Pomingalarna. I was rostered on the drinks stop today so didn't run the Pommy course but Briohny did. So she had already done 7.5km before we started and was a bit tired which suited me to run at her pace. A lot cooler today and nice for running though we has a SE headwind most of the way.

Thursday Apr 2, 2009 #

Running 26:00 [3] 5.4 km (4:49 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Afternoon lap of the Lake with Briohny. Was a bit apprehensive as arthritis (gout??) in big toes playing up really badly today after golf yesterday (or was it the 2 glasses of red last night!) Interesting that gout is not caused by too much good food and alcohol, but can be made worse by them! Briohny also in the wars after falling over a dog whilst running in the dark this morning!!

After a slow start, toes started to feel OK (or maybe I couldn't feel them at all?) and settled into a good pace. Lots of talking which was nice but was a bit spent by the end:)

Met Sanders part way round and had a quick word. She is home for her sister's wedding on the weekend.

Wednesday Apr 1, 2009 #

Note

Golf this afternoon for the first time in over a month. Played very well on 2nd nine (23pts), to finish with 39pts overall but missed a lot of chances to do much better.

Arthritis in toes bad by the time I finished, mainly due to golf shoes being too rigid. Might need to wear runners for a while.
