Orienteering race 43:55 [3] * 8.5 km (5:10 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 8

Street score event in Kooringal. Really pleasant conditions for running and enjoyed the event and felt good throughout. No real problems with navigation except a dodgy route choice early on. A bonus point was awarded for identifying the former occupants of a house in Sherwood Ave....but I didn't get to that far!

Running 37:40 [3] 7.5 km (5:01 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Cumulus 9

Warm afternoon run around to the BBQ shed at Lake Albert via the Boat Club, then home again. Needed to get out after another 2 days of meetings, plus one more tomorrow (seems to be all I do lately!). Pushed quite hard on the way out so faded a bit coming home but felt I held a reasonable pace.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [1] ****
shoes: Asics Gel Trabuca trail

Waggaroos training weekend: a walking session with the group in some technical granite terrain in Beechworth gorge, discussing mapping techniques and how to read the granite. Followed up with a short control placement exercise.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1] 2.0 km (30:00 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Trabuca trail

Waggaroos tarining weekend at Beechworth: walked around a small area in Beechworth gorge with a couple of juniors, placing some controls and explaining the finer arts of Orienteering.

Orienteering 41:00 [3] **** 3.5 km (11:43 / km)
spiked:11/12c shoes: Asics Gel Trabuca trail

Waggaroos training weekend: ran a short course as part of a training exercise. Made a couple of bad errors and felt very slow although the terrain in Beechworth gorge is pretty tough in parts.

Orienteering 28:00 [3] 2.5 km (11:12 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Trabuca trail

Waggaroos training weekend: collecting controls after training exercise

Orienteering 27:30 [3] * 2.0 km (13:45 / km)
spiked:12/14c shoes: Asics Gel Trabuca trail

Waggaroos training weekend: traditional Night O around La Trobe campus at Beechworth. Lots of fun, with a couple of crossovers. At one point, ran around a garden bed straight into two security guards with their torches in my face! They were working at a wedding reception and had seen the lights running past in the dark. I was the first one they had caught! A quick explanation and I was away again. Heard later that they shone their torches on the control for subsequent runners. Thanks guys!.

Orienteering race 28:20 [3] 4.5 km (6:18 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 8

Street event at Lake Albert. Only ran the short as I had basically just stepped out of my car after driving home from Sydney. Just a steady run to loosen up a bit after 4 days of meetings.

Running 28:00 [3] 5.5 km (5:05 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Cumulus 9

Managed to squeeze in a short run after meeting in Sydney and before dinner with some friends in Crows Nest. Around the streets and parks of Wolstonecroft and Crows Nest, a bit hilly but good to fit in a run after sitting down for the last two days (and next two) at meetings.

Running 1:19:35 [3] 14.5 km (5:29 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Cumulus 9

Morning long run. A bit longer, time and distance, than last week and felt good all the way. Straight out and back on Plumpton Rd today. Nice conditions again although into a gusty north-easterly on the way home.

Orienteering 45:00 [3] **** 4.0 km (11:15 / km)
spiked:9/11c shoes: Silva K80

First terrain run for quite a long time. I set a couple of 4 km loops on Connorton for Briohny, so Deb and I also went out and ran one of the courses. Navigation a little rusty on a couple.

Nice to be back running, albeit quite slowly, in the bush. Grass quite long which made for careful foot placement with many small rocks lying hidden, especially as I didn't strap my ankles. Another challenge was the many Golden Orb spiders in their massive webs seemingly across all my routes choices!

Running 39:30 [3] 7.5 km (5:16 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 8

Morning run and really nice. Out to the BBQ shed at Apex Park via at Club and back. Lots of people about. Needed this run after dinner out for Cam's birthday last night and next two nights out with work!

Sunday Feb 10, 2008 #

Running 1:16:45 [3] 13.0 km (5:54 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Cumulus 9

Sunday morning long run. Plumpton, Boiling Down, Redbank rds and home via the Lake and Boat Club. First crack at this since early May (prior to injuries, etc). Time was slow (about 5-6 mins slower than last time) but no real issues. Great conditions for a run: fine, about 16C and a light easterly. Met the pack runners (Carmel, Max, Bruce, Spokesy, Malcolm and Bill) coming the other way.

Running race 28:40 [3] 5.6 km (5:07 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Cumulus 9

Road Runners at Wagga Beach: big turnout for the 2nd run of the year and really nice conditions for the 6:00pm run. Took it really steady and managed to keep a reasonable pace with a couple of others. Didn't want to get caught up in the occasion and run too fast. Passed a few as we got near the end but then got swamped by the home straight "sprinters".

Thursday Feb 7, 2008 #

Orienteering race 43:00 [3] * 6.7 km (6:25 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Cumulus 9

Street score event in Glenfield. I know this area pretty well as we used to live there (and I drew the original map) so tried to run in the bits I didn't know so well. New shoes tonight and ran without my knee support as well, so didn't push to hard. Nice and cool for a change!

Tuesday Feb 5, 2008 #

Running 49:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:54 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 8

Afternoon run out to Rawlings Park via the Boat Club and back. Not too hot but very humid so plenty of drinks stops at convenient taps.

Sunday Feb 3, 2008 #

Running 35:00 [3] 7.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 8

Morning run with Deb in Kinglake NP in the Yarra Valley. We drove out from our accom, parked at a random track head and headed off on the ominously named Mt Jerusalem Track.

Soon found the track head was the track bottom! Climbed up and up for about 2 km then finally broke off the track (it kept going up) for a fairly level bush run along a ridge line for about 500m and then return to track and down to the car. I pulled away from Deb on the downhill and kept running past the car for about another 2km when Deb picked me up in the car.

Really pleasant running conditions (apart from the slope!). Cool overcast morning and great to be in the forest.

Note

Rest Day: well hardly, as Deb and I were up at 4:30am to catch our 5:15am appointment with Global Ballooning to collect our 50th Birthday present from Briohny and Cameron: a hot air balloon flight in the Yarra Valley. Fortunately the trip started at our Motel at Fergussons Winery so we just had to walk down to the winery.

Great fun trip! Once we reached the launch site (in Yarra Glen), had to help with unpacking and inflating balloon, then away we went. A bit of low cloud but we soon burst through that to see a brilliant sunrise. Only trouble was the wind at ground level was 2.5kph but once we hit 3000ft it was suddenly 50kph, so we raced along too quickly and had to drop back down below cloud level and it seemed we would have a very short flight. Our pilot did a great job however and we managed to stay aloft for almost an hour and then an almost perfect landing next to the support vehicle in some farmers paddock!

Packed up the balloon (sounds easy but wasn't) and then back to the winery for champagne and breakfast. Great morning - thanks kids!
