Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] ****
shoes: UK Gear PT03 trail

Waggaroos training weekend at Beechworth. Placing controls at Mt Pilot for tomorrow's exercise. Unfortunately, regrowth after fires some years back was very heavy so decided to cut it short. Also decided to move this afternoon's exercises to The Gorge. A relocation drill when you can't see anything probably wouldn't work that well!

Orienteering 45:00 [2] ****

Waggaroos training weekend: relocation exercises in small groups in The Gorge at Beechworth. I worked with our least experienced group, so we just walked and talked a lot about reading the terrain and maintaining map contact. I think they all got something out of it.

We also placed our control for the American Pie relay.

Orienteering race 14:00 [4] **** 1.5 km (9:20 / km)
shoes: UK Gear PT03 trail

Very warm and we were keen to get back and have a swim at La Trobe so we did a variation on the American Pie relay, with each group starting together but on a different control (only 4 in total). My group didn't win but we weren't last either - good fun!

Back to La Trobe at Beechworth for a swim and then some social time and dinner before the Night O!

I had the notebook and a projector so I showed a few training related items on route choice and course setting. In keeping with the "relocation" theme, I showed the GPS animation of Rob Preston's infamous run at last years QLD champs! Went down very well and just emphasised that even the elite make mistakes, sometime BIG ones :-)

Night O around La Trobe Beechworth campus on the 2003 Aust Sprint map. Great course and although we have used it before, it can still be difficult at night. Managed a king-sized stuff up going from 9 to 10, via 12 and 11!

Orienteering race 43:22 [3] * 8.3 km (5:13 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Summer Series at Glenfield. Nicely planned course. This is a good street map - all credit to the town planner, not the mapper (me!) :-) with lots of lanes, parks, cul de sacs and bendy streets to aid (confuse?) route choice. Managed to get all but 4 controls (3 x 5 and 1 x 10 pts) so ended up tying with Briohny on 200pts. Nice to run around the old home suburb again - only get out here once a year now, for the Summer Series.

Running 41:00 [3] 5.2 km (7:53 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

A bit of variety today. Briohny's and I ran from her house up onto Willan's Hill and then did all the exercise stations (26 in all), jogging in between, then ran back home.

Good at hurdles (very low!), leap frog and tyre scrambles, OK at push-ups and sit-ups, very ordinary at chin-ups and rope (steel pipe actually) climbing but all good fun and not to strenuous on a smokey, 33C afternoon.

Running race 26:55 [5] 5.6 km (4:48 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 10

Road Runners week 3 at Wagga Beach. A fair bit warmer this week (around 32C) but I was still faster than last week by about 40 secs, which was probably due to not running in the morning like I did last week. Felt like I was working pretty hard and probably started a bit quick.

A few visiting Orienteers running today - the Dent clan are in town for a family celebration (Julian showed up all the locals with a quick 20:04 for the 5.6km).

Running 34:15 [3] 6.0 km (5:43 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Ran from home back to work to pick up a car for trip to Deniliquin in the morning. Ran up Red Hill and then up along the top of Willan's Hill and then down onto the Wiradjiri Track above the Botanic Gardens and through to Macleay St and up then up to the TAFE Campus. A very hilly run - seemed to be mostly uphill but I guess that can't be right:) - but enjoyed it on a not too warm day. Also means I can sleep in a bit tomorrow as I was going to run in the morning!

Running intervals 1:00:00 [5] 8.3 km (7:14 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Willans Hill intervals with Briohny. Time includes warm up and down run to and from Bri's house. Did 7 x 350m hills with jog recovery back down. After a fast 1st one, my pace dropped off a bit! Briohny did a solid 8 but I cheated a bit by having a rest after 5 and then doing the last 2 with her. Good session and nice to train with someone for a change. Split times are in my HRM but can't be bothered to find it:-)

Running 1:01:02 [3] 12.2 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Steady morning run out past the Lake and then through Rawlings Park to Mitchell Rd and return. Fairly slow at first to try and warm up a dodgy knee and achilles, then picked up the pace a little for the remainder. Out in 31 mins, back in 30.

Running race 27:35 [5] 5.6 km (4:56 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 10

Road Runners at Wagga Beach. First official run after last week's heatwave ono-race. Close to 20C cooler this week and overcast which made for very pleasant running conditions.

Was very slow at first as I was pretty sore form this morning's run and was trying out new shoes but picked up the pace in the 2nd half and was happy with the time. Shoes great!

Orienteering race 46:00 [5] * 8.4 km (5:29 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Summer Series from Briohny's house in Urana St. The run was through the Mt Austin and Turvey Park areas. 30 minutes before the run, it started to RAIN. And it just kept raining right through the run! (still raining now 5 hours later). Also very cool (about 15C compared to the previous 2 weeks when it has been 40+)

Started well and was making good time, picking off controls. Then I ran out of a playground on the south of the map and across what usually is an open field. Today it had 6 inches of water right across it, a result of an overflowing stormwater channel, so shoes got pretty soaked!

A dumb error coming back when I did a 180 (on a Street map!) and ended up going round an extra town block. Cost me a control (ran out of time)and a time penalty.

(rest day)

Driving back from Sydney and just wasn't up to a run when I got home. Street O tomorrow night...

Running 41:30 [3] 7.0 km (5:56 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Afternoon run in Sydney, cool and drizzly rain which was great for running after the weather at home over the last 2 weeks. Ran from hotel at Crows Nest down thru Cammeray to Tunks Park on the waters edge then back under Northbridge bridge and up along great single bush tracks with lots of stairs along Flat (not) Rock Creek and back to the hotel through Crows Nest.

Sydney for meetings: managed to sqeeze in 9 holes at North Ryde after work today - gotta love this daylight saving! Nice course, quite short but tight fairways, my game didn't match up.

Running 17:30 [4] 3.5 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

First Roadies run for the year. Due to the extreme heat (still on 42C at 6:00pm) the run was non-competitive and no times recorded, to ensure no-one pushed too hard. Amazingly, there were probably 35-40 people there despite the conditions. Actually, apart from the heat, it was a nice social way to start the year, chatting to a few folk along the way. At least one took the river (swimming) option on the way back to the finish!

Golf today, only 39 degrees, not too bad!!! 38 points (a wipe and 3 x 1 pointers), not to good!!!

Running 32:15 [3] 6.0 km (5:23 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 9

Afternoon run out past the Lake into Rawlings Park with Briohny. We had planned on a lap of the Lake but, given it was 38C at 5:30pm, we thought it would be better to find some shade on the tracks in Rawlings! Tried a 200m surge at about the halfway mark but it nearly did me in!
