Hiking (Trail) 5:00 [1] 0.3 mi (16:40 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:188.5lbs

Oregon Ridge State Park, MD. We walked from the intersection of Ivy Hill Road and Jerome Jay Dr., to an assembly point up the hill.

Running warm up/down (Trail) 11:10 intensity: (6:10 @2) + (5:00 @3) 0.75 mi (14:53 / mi) +19m 13:48 / mi

SSS at Oregon Ridge State Park, MD. Francis Hogel, and and Boris G. talked about warming-up and then we tried a few techniques. What's linked is a short jog on a trail mostly. We also did some silly walks and pick-up runs. It did stretch us out well, though with the after-a-rain humidity and room temperature forest it didn't take a lot.

Orienteering (Foot) 14:22 [4] 1.7 km (8:27 / km) +66m 7:05 / km

QOC Summer Short Series at Oregon Ridge State Park, MD. Peggy and I teamed-up against others. Closely matched were Boris G. and Alli. Peggy came back with a lead. I moved well going to #1 and spiked it. I was approaching after passing Jody Landers, so I was thinking to get out quickly. I subsequently did a 180 and lost 90 seconds. After that, I scooted along to spike the rest. I was feeling a little tired before finishing. Somehow I stayed ahead of Boris, but only by 10-15 seconds--he'd made some errors too. The woods were great with all of it except for where #1 was, being completely open. My 180 error leaving #1 had the advantage of not running me into a wasp nest that others got stung from.

Orienteering (Foot) 11:50 [4] 1.7 km (6:58 / km) +62m 5:53 / km

QOC Summer Short Series at Oregon Ridge State Park, MD. As I got going, I heard Peggy yell behind me that Boris was close by. I ended up being a bit too low and was confused for a 10 seconds. had to climb a little to get to the depression on a hillside so I lost about 25-30 seconds on #1. After that, I spiked everything else. I heard noise behind me leaving #4 so I thought Boris was closing-in. It was something else that I heard, but Boris finished about 20 seconds behind me anyway. This was a nice training format and what's left of the park was great for it. It's really a shame that so much of it has gotten logged.

Hiking (Trail) 6:36 [1] 0.3 mi (21:59 / mi) +2m 21:33 / mi

Oregon Ridge State Park, MD. We walked back to the intersection of Ivy Hill Road and Jerome Jay Dr., I carried Barney across the road--he's a very nice and easy going Beagle with a good singing voice for howling.

Bicycling (Commute) 5:46 [3] 1.41 mi (4:05 / mi)

From Northfield Rd.to the Bethesda Metro Station.

Bicycling (Commute) 6:33 [3] 1.41 mi (4:39 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. I had bought dinner in Bethesda before starting my ride back. Light rain had started and the dinner was in a paper bag that I held. I had hit a bump when getting out the the way of an oncoming car, and when I got back in the road, I hit another and noticed that my bag had ripped. I was probably seconds away from losing it but grabbed the container in time!

Bicycling (Commute) 38:14 [4] 12.1 mi (3:10 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:186lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, then to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, DC. It was still nice and cool, in the 60s F, and with no winds. I picked-up a guy who drafted off of me from somewhere past Massachusetts Ave. in MD, to 15th St. SW in DC. With a few slowdowns for traffic early-on, I was pushing it a bit, and not feeling so strong.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 41:49 [4] 11.9 mi (3:31 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. Leaving the office and stopped at the 15th St. SW traffic light I got the jump on the cars. Some other faster cyclists tailed, then passed me at the Jefferson Memorial. I passed both back and got passed again on Ohio Dr. While one fell off the pace, I traded positions again with the other in Georgetown, where I was faster in the traffic. Then a 4th, younger guy on a mountain bike passed both of us. Things were quiet for a long while. The mountain bike rider was moving my pace but just ahead far enough that I wasn't drafting, or really catching him and the other rider disappeared behind me. I did gain a little on the mountain bike rider when going up the grade. The mountain bike rider turned off at the Palisades. At Dalecarlia, the guy whom I traded places with most, and whom I thought turned-off behind me, went by me quickly. I kept my effort high most of this ride but did slow it down the last few miles.

Bicycling (Commute) 5:50 [3] 1.41 mi (4:08 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:188lbs

From Northfield Rd.to the Bethesda Metro Station. Once again it was cool in the morning.
7 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 5:25 [4] 1.41 mi (3:51 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. I wore my running clothes again since I didn't get time to run and it was just easier this way.
10 PM

Running (Street & Trail) 45:22 [3] 5.25 mi (8:38 / mi)

From Northfield Rd. to Old Georgetown Rd. via Greenwich Park, to Cheshire Dr.. to Grosvenor Rd. to the Bethesda Trolley Trail at Fleming Ave. to Old Georgetown Rd. to Northfield Rd. via Greenwich Park. Temperatures were in the mid 60s F and the humidity was low so it was a nice night to run. I know this to be unusual for DC in August but except for it being 10 degrees warmer a year ago, I copied the same words out of a training entry from August 24, 2016. I didn't feel like going out; the increased training is catching up with me. Once I got going, I didn't feel strong, but I didn't feel so bad either. The miles seemed long and right leg was hurting more than my left. It was nice seeing the moon again and knowing about where it'll be in 2 weeks.

10 PM

Running (Street & Trail) 18:13 [3] 2.15 mi (8:28 / mi)

From Northfield Rd. I ran up to Custer Rd., to Wilson La., to Exeter Rd. to Glenbrook Rd. to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, to the NIH grounds, to Maple Ridge Rd. to Georgetown Pike, to Huntington Pkwy., to Custer Rd. to Northfield Rd. The moon was pretty much full and it was very nice and cool. I unfortunately was the same steaming sweaty mess that I usually am by the end of the run.

Running (Street & Trail) 34:21 [3] 4.06 mi (8:28 / mi)
weight:187.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., Greenwich Park, to Old Georgetown Rd. to Beech Dr. to Singleton Dr. to Bulls Run Pkwy., to the trail along the school to Bradmore Dr. to Folkstone Rd. to Hartsdale Ave. to Heampstead Ave. to McKinley St. to Garfield St., to Roosevelt St., to the trail at Jefferson St. to Northfield Rd. It was surprisingly cool outside--very unlike August in DC. I did end up sweating a good deal and didn't feel very strong. My weaker right leg felt sore but it was nice to be out running.

Orienteering (Foot) 28:36 intensity: (15:36 @3) + (13:00 @4) *** 3.1 km (9:14 / km) +39m 8:41 / km
spiked:12/18c weight:187.5lbs

QOC Summer Short Series at Galluadet University. After many years, I finally got onto the campus and was able to run a sprint. Mark Mace had several events there earlier and shared the difficulties with getting permissions from previous university officials. Those restrictions were eased last year but I was on vacation when Mark held an event there last summer. Even for summertime, the campus seemed empty.

I'd been helping Mark with redrafting the map and making updates/corrections. The map was in a mixed state between non-sprint, and sprint specific symbols. It took me a while to get into running on it since in my head, I'd imagined a larger space. Some areas that I thought would be easy did hold a challenge. Of course, it didn't help that I went out without a compass. A few times, I thought there was a need to adjust the map; I'll do that as soon as Mark gives me his corrections. I made mistakes early, the did okay (except for the a fore mentioned map issues).

All in all, it was a fun outing. My family went to have lunch in Bowie afterward, and then dropped off Max to a 2 week long sleepaway camp.
