Bicycling (Commute) 38:00 [3] 12.1 mi (3:08 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:182lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was much cooler today and there was a tailwind. The time is estimated since I forgot to monitor it at the start but I was moving well judging from intermediate splits and passing others.
5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 45:30 [3] 11.9 mi (3:49 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. I carried my laptop back home as well as my backpack. Initially there was a headwind getting to Georgetown. Some riders converged near the end of Water St. so right away I had 2 quick riders in front breaking the wind. We started smoothly and got through a few passes of slower riders. Half a mile from Fletcher's Boathouse, we were passing some more riders but the guy in front hesitated as other riders were approaching. I had to back off and another rider close behind me who was catching-up didn't adjust so well. He yelled loudly and had a near miss. He went by soon after and I let the 3 riders in front go. I pulled another guy up the hill, and eventually eased behind another rider for the last 2 miles before Falls Rd. I passed him from there and cruised in. I thought I was going faster overall but given how tired I was the last day or so this was alright.

Calisthenics (General) 2:00 [3]
slept:5.5 weight:178lbs (rest day)

30 sit ups. I would have tried to bicycle today but the rain saved me from it. The rest probably was better for me. My quads continued to hurt. These also didn't feel that nice on my back.

Bicycling (Commute) 6:00 [3] 1.41 mi (4:15 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:179lbs

From Northfield Rd., to the Bethesda Metro Station.
7 PM

Running (Street & Trail Commute) 43:58 [3] 4.55 mi (9:40 / mi)

Washington, D.C. From 12th & Independence Ave., SW, down The Mall along Independence Ave. and the Reflecting Pool to the Lincoln Memorial, to Ohio Dr. to the Rock Creek Trail, to Calvert St., to the Woodley Park/Zoo Metro Station. I was tired before starting this run; my legs were sore during the daytime at work. I had not eaten much all day since I want to drop weight, and was busy. I had some nuts for a snack and chips during lunch but that was it. In the first 0.2 miles, I was glad to have a stop at a traffic light. Similar relief occurred at the remaining intersections. After the first 2 miles, the hurting in my quads got a lot worse. After 3 miles, I was already 2 minutes slower than the easy pace I'd run to the same point 2 days earlier. It was 84 F in DC which isn't that bad. I kept moving the whole way in up to Calvert St., but struggled with it. My arms were even getting tired. I imagine that walking up the hill could have been faster than I was running it. I was wobbly and soaked afterward and I stretched.
8 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 7:00 [3] 1.4 mi (5:00 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. I was very tired and sweaty, and thirsty. I weighed-out at 176.5 lbs, then got some food.

Bicycling (Commute) 12:00 [3] 1.56 mi (7:41 / mi)
slept:5.25 weight:178.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to Garfield St., to Hartsdale Ave. and back. Samantha and I rode on the trail-a-bike this morning with Max walking along for part of the way.

Bicycling (Commute) 38:00 [3] 12.1 mi (3:08 / mi)

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD, to 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It felt cooler on the first ride of the day, but it was still fairly comfortable riding into town. I didn't feel it until riding along the Potomac on Ohio Dr., but there was a headwind. I didn't push initially and as I got passed after River Rd., I picked-up the pace to tag along. At the trestle bridge the rider I'd been following slowed and a 3rd rider who caught us moved ahead. I didn't chase him but passed the rider I'd been drafting on, to continue at a fair pace. I was surprised at feeling better on this ride. Part of the difference might be that my lungs and nose weren't so congested. This ride also puts me over 1,000 miles for the year through August, which is well ahead of not only last year, a rough year for me, but some other recent years.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 42:12 [3] 11.9 mi (3:33 / mi)

From 13th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C., to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. With a tailwind, I got a pretty good start getting to Georgetown. Soon after I was on the Capital Crescent Trail, 2 guys passed me moving well. I latched on but the guy in front of me eventually lost contact. As he slowed another guy passed us. After the guy in front of me slowed as we headed up the hill, I took over leading and pulled him up to the Pallisades. I took it easier on the long stretch approaching Massachusetts Ave. but kept steady getting home.

Bicycling (Commute) 6:10 [3] 1.41 mi (4:22 / mi)
weight:180.5lbs (sick)

From Northfield Rd., to the Bethesda Metro Station. It was the first day of school in the county and that meant new routines. Everything went smoothly but the kids and I were are all tired.
8 PM

Running (Street & Trail Commute) 32:18 [3] 3.6 mi (8:58 / mi)

Washington, D.C. From 12th & Independence Ave., SW, down Independence Ave., to 17th St., along the Reflecting Pool to the Lincoln Memorial circle, to Ohio Dr. to the Rock Creek Trail, to P St., NW., to 20th St., NW., to the Dupont Circle Metro Station at Q St., NW. It was 84 F when I finished. I felt I was running okay for the first 2 miles and I didn't feel bloated like last night when I ran. My running held up okay though I was pretty tired and sweaty once done. I stretched for a while afterward.
9 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 6:14 [3] 1.41 mi (4:25 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station, to Northfield Rd. Part of the way was still bumpy from a repaving construction project but a good portion that was bumpy got a first layer of new pavement. I rode in the dark and didn't push since I was tired. The air from the self-made breeze was almost chilling my sweaty skin.

5 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 20:00 [3] 2.25 mi (8:53 / mi)
slept:6.25 weight:182lbs (sick)

From Northfield Rd., to Garfield St./Aberdeen Pl., to Aberdeen Rd., to Wilson Ln, to Pyle MS., then back via Hampden Ln. I towed Samantha on her trail-a-bike while Peggy and Max rode along. We attended a picnic. It was hot and everyone was looking for shade except for the radio DJ crew who were dancing up a storm.
10 PM

Running (Street & Trail) 18:46 intensity: (9:46 @3) + (9:00 @4) 2.2 mi (8:32 / mi)
(sick)

From Northfield Rd. I ran up to Custer Rd., to Wilson La., to Exeter Rd. to Glenbrook Rd. to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, to the NIH grounds, to Maple Ridge Rd. to Georgetown Pike, to Huntington Pkwy., to Custer Rd. to Northfield Rd. I struggled with the first hill, all out of breath. After that I was better but still only 8:50 at the first mile. I pushed a little harder to finish but that was mostly a struggle too. I could feel dinner sitting in me starting out but I also guess I'm just tired. I notice that I ran this same run just about a year ago, one second faster and felt over-trained from cycling then. I should be better now, given recovery from back problems but I'm pretty slow. Maybe losing weight is affecting my energy level too. The run did help my digestion and I felt better afterward.
