Orienteering 58:39 [3] 3.89 mi (15:04 / mi) +235m 12:41 / mi

SSS: Great Falls, VA. Tom Strat set a middle distance course for the SSS this day. It was using a 25 year map and emphasized reading contours. The vegetation had changed in many places but wasn' so bad. Old mapped ootstocks were gone so we had to ignore both the ones on the map and the ones we saw in the forest. There were plenty of new ones from the derecho storm but it wasn't so bad. The old contours were pretty much as good as the first day the map was printed, and they were mapped pretty well. To fit with the retro style of the training, we all had to copy our course onto the map from masters. It was very humid. I got going relatively early. I didn't see anyone for a long while. At #8, I might have made a mistake but coming into the control area, I had been off enough to happen onto the control which was placed on the wrong pit. It was actually on the right pit from Tom's perspective, but he'd made both master maps incorrectly. I eventually caught Peggy. I had gone straight to most controls. I hadn't made a mistake until somewhere around #11. I stopped one reentrant too early and had gone up and down it once when Peggy came through--I hadn't realized I'd passed her until then. Once her presence clued me in, I went straight to the control, getting there ahead of Peggy since I had seen it from a distance. Peggy approached from the same place ahead of me but kept going straight. The control was probably a bit higher than we both thought it'd be. I ended-up stopping short once more when a ripple in a hillside started looking like it could be a mapped reentrant. Other than these, I hadn't made any mistakes. The forest and contours were great. I did keep an eye out for rangers. There are no published rules about staying on the trails but they do enforce this if they see you. A few of the people who came were stopped.
