US Team Trials at Highland State Recreation Area (near Detroit, MI) on the Haven Hill Map. I ran the Red/Blue Sprint and was fairly accurate. I just felt too weak from being sick to run faster. I bobble #5 by passing it just a bit--I expected it on the other side of the clearing rather than the edge of the forest that I'd crossed. I caught another guy for the last several controls but just couldn't go fast enough to pass him. On the run-in I passed Evelyn Brautigam (around 10-11 years old) who was walking at the time. Lucky for me, she had a cramp. I wondered if I'd have to sprint to beat her in and whether I could or not. It was a nice 65 F day and very breezy at times.

Event: QOC Manassas

Orienteering (Foot) 1:14:36 [4]
slept:8.0 weight:174.5lbs (sick)

Manassas Battlefield Park, VA; Groveton Parking Area. Peggy, Paul, Max and I enjoyed some time outdoors. It was about 79F when I started just after 2pm. Before I'd gone 100m, my head started throbbing. My thighs, hurt yesterday, still hurt but not as much. I wondered if I'd be able to finish. I settled into a steady pace and just kept going. Eventually, my stomach started bothering me too. I made a slight error at #2, then backed out to avoid the deadfall, then was hitting things pretty good till #12. At #12, some unmapped deadfall made me back out and go around again. I got confused on the way to #13 and kept reading the wrong side of the ridge. After a loop there, I finished the rest well but slow. I was glad to have finished at all. I enjoyed the new area. The subtled 2.5m contours coupled with a mix of open woods, rough and open fields and some rock features made this a pretty good area. The map could have used some fixing in places--deadfall extended beyond what was mapped and broken rock walls were mapped as stony ground or not at all. Hopefullly I'll recover from this illness soon.

Running (Babyjogger) 34:46 [3] 4.0 mi (8:42 / mi)
slept:7.5 weight:175lbs (sick)

Rock Creek Park, Ken-Gar Parking. Peggy, Paul and I attempted to run with MCRRC. We hadn't been there for a while but to be consistent we were 5 minutes late anyway. As it turns out, only Paz had shown-up. The rest were resting for tommorow to run the Pike's Peek race. My sickness continues. I had waken up at night in a sweat. Starting running, I pushed Max behind Peggy and Paul for the first mile. We were all slow there--9:14. We speeded up slightly running about 8:30 the next. Peggy and Paul dropped off the pace a bit. I think it's due to being sick; my right thigh started feeling like I was pulling a muscle just before the turnaround at Mile Marker 5. I managed another 8:30 with Max, pasing a few first time runner groups. The last mile, my left thigh started feeling like it was pulled too. I limped in with a 8:33 mile. After eating breakfast with the club and getting home, I took some aspirin and slept 2 hours. I was feeling very sore all over.
